S03E02: Operations

What Is Love?

“Nayeon kicked you out?” Momo asks Jeongyeon. Meanwhile, Mina tells Jinyoung to prepare a pitcher of water for the Design Team’s leader.

“Yes,” Jeongyeon sighs.

“But why?” Now it’s Mina’s turn to ask.

Jeongyeon then starts to recount what happened when she got home after their retreat.

“Hi,” Nayeon greets Jeongyeon with a smile as she enters, walking towards her to give her a kiss. “What’s that?”

“I bought lunch,” Jeongyeon replies, setting the chicken on the dining table. “Have you eaten already?”

“Breakfast, yes; lunch, no. Although I was trying to bake some cookies earlier.”

“Really?” Jeongyeon perks up and looks over the kitchen. “Where are they?”

“I threw them away,” Nayeon mutters as she prepares dining utensils. “They taste like trash.”

“Aww,” Jeongyeon says with a chuckle. “It’s okay, babe. Next time we’ll try baking together, yeah?” She gives Nayeon a peck. “What’s wrong?” she asks when she sees her girlfriend still frowning.

“I just…” Nayeon then shakes her head. “It’s nothing.”

Jeongyeon squeezes Nayeon’s hand, reassuring her. “Tell me.”

“Okay, but don’t freak out.” Nayeon takes a deep breath. “It’s just that… I’ve been thinking about us and-and the future, you know? And I wanna be able to cook and bake for our children so I figured, why not start with something simple such as cookies?”

“You’re so cute,” says Jeongyeon, showering Nayeon with kisses on the cheek. “Don’t worry, we’ll still have time to learn all these things for our five children.”

Nayeon turns her head sharply towards Jeongyeon, an incredulous look over her face. “I’m sorry—five?”

“Yeah,” Jeongyeon replies with a -eating grin.

“No, uh-uh.” Nayeon retracts her hand from Jeongyeon’s. “Two is enough.”

“Two?” Jeongyeon scoffs. “Nayeon, you’re no fun.”

“No fun? No fun?! Jeongyeon, how is having five kids fun? What, you think it’s fun to take care of five crying babies running around and breaking things?”

“Well, we’re not gonna have them all at the same time.” Jeongyeon chuckles.

“And how are they gonna all fit inside the house?” Nayeon has her hands on her waist now. “If you’ve already forgotten, we only have two guestrooms.”

“Of course we’re not gonna stay here,” Jeongyeon replies coolly.

“What, we’ll raise them in the suburbs? Jeongyeon, I want to stay here in the city—”

“In Germany.”

“Germany?” Nayeon lets out a harsh laugh. “What makes you think of moving to Germany all of a sudden?”

“I got a job offer from a company there called Mastermix. They’re offering me a senior manager position, and the salary is great plus benefits—”

“Wait, wait, wait. You got an offer? Or did you apply?”

“I…” Jeongyeon gulps. “I applied.”

“And when did you apply?”

“Come on, Nayeon, does it really matter—”

“When did you apply?” Nayeon asks again coldly.

Jeongyeon lets out a sigh. “About three months ago.”

“Three months ago,” Nayeon repeats. Her voice then starts getting louder. “Three months ago, and you didn’t tell me?”

“I’m telling you now—”

“Don’t play smart with me.”

“Okay, I didn’t want to tell you until I got accepted because it wouldn’t matter if I got rejected, anyway. But look—Germany is a beautiful place, it’s right next to Switzerland, and it’s quiet, and we can start a family there. Haven’t you always said that you want to tour around Europe?”

“Yes, but for vacation, Jeongyeon! God. And do you seriously expect me to move to Europe and leave my job here? This is why you should have told me about this in the first place!”

“I’m sorry,” is all Jeongyeon could say.

“Get out.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Get out.”

“Nayeon, we can talk about this.”

“Clearly, you don’t think so. Now get out. I don’t want to talk to you and I… I have some things to think about.”

Seeing as there’s no convincing Nayeon otherwise, Jeongyeon walks out of the house empty-handed and proceeds to the bar.

“And now I’m here,” she says, finishing her story in front of Momo and Mina. Having drunken enough water and slowly coming back to her senses, she narrows her eyes at Momo, who isn’t the owner of the house. “Why are you here?”

Mina shakes her head before answering for Momo. “That’s not important. What’s important is your relationship with Nayeon.”

“Are you planning to take the job?” Momo asks Jeongyeon.

“I don’t know,” Jeongyeon replies, her hands above her head, looking down. “I really wanted to talk to Nayeon about this.”

“Then it should be our mission to make you and Nayeon talk!” Mina says with determination that makes Momo admire her.

“Thanks guys, but I don’t think you can make Nayeon do anything she doesn’t want to. When we talk, it’ll for sure be on her own terms. But thanks for the thought.” Jeongyeon gives the two a sad smile. “Anyway Mina, is it okay if I stay here for a while? The rest house is just starting its renovation and I have nowhere else to go…”

“No worries, boss. I got you.” Mina smiles at Jeongyeon.

“I should probably get going,” says Momo, standing up.

“I’ll walk you out,” Mina utters, standing up as well to lead Momo back to the door. Before she says goodbye to the girl, she talks to her in a low voice. “What do you think?”

“I don’t know,” Momo sighs. “Jeongyeon told us not to do anything, but…”

“I get what you mean. Look, you know Nayeon better than I do. Do you agree with what Jeongyeon said earlier, about them talking on Nayeon’s terms?”

“Yeah, Nayeon can be pretty stubborn when she’s pissed at something. Maybe we just watch them and see what happens first?”

“Okay,” Mina replies. “See you tomorrow, Momo.”

Unfortunately it doesn’t turn out to be the best decision because the very next day at work, Nayeon would always take a shot at Jeongyeon whenever she passes by the Design Team’s area.

“It’s bad,” Momo tells Mina. “Should we make a plan now?”

Mina nods in response. “I think we should do this with Jihyo’s help.”

Meanwhile, in the Applications Team cave, Chungha assigns Sana, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung to a new project.

“All three of us are on the same project?” Dahyun asks, because usually only one (and sometimes two) would be assigned to a project for efficiency.

“Yes,” Chungha answers her. “It’s because you aren’t working on an IC this time—well, technically, not yet. The company is looking at possibilities for automated design firmware in the future. For now we just want to see if design decisions can be made with machine learning, so you will first be working with a Design Team representative to learn about, well, design. Ah, here she is now.”

Chaeyoung hears a soft gasp come out from Dahyun’s mouth.

“She’s so pretty,” Dahyun whispers to no one in particular, but of course Sana hears this.

“Pretty?” Sana repeats in an annoyed tone. “She’s pretty? Hey, Dahyun, you’re with me, remember that.”

Dahyun chuckles at her girlfriend’s jealousy. “Yeah, she’s pretty, but you’re pretty too and you’re the one I love,” she reassures Sana, squeezing her hand.

“Everyone,” says Chungha, “meet Chou Tzuyu.”

Chaeyoung almost screams when she hears Tzuyu’s name.

“Tzuyu, these are Sana, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung,” Chaeyoung can hear her leader say, although the panicking voice inside her head is much louder. “I assume this is the first time you’ve met them?”

Tzuyu briefly shares a look with Chaeyoung before replying. “Yes. It’s nice to meet you all.”

During lunch time, Mina and Jihyo go to the cafeteria to eat and discuss their plan of making Nayeon and Jeongyeon talk.

“Where’s Momo?” Jihyo asks Mina.

“She’s just setting up a simulation, but she’ll be here soon. Listen, I know Momo got that promotion because she was the one who was sent to California…”

“Mina, I’m not mad.” Jihyo gives Mina a warm smile. “I don’t think I would have liked it in Design, anyway.”

“Hey!” Mina pushes Jihyo’s shoulder.

“Speaking of the California incident, where’s your girlfriend? Is she in on this, too?”

“Oh, uh, we broke up.”

“You WHAT?”

“Yeah. Last weekend.”

“Why? What happened?” Jihyo asks as they look for a seat as they bring their food.

“She doesn’t trust me enough for me to be alone with Momo,” Mina explains, sighing as she plays with the food on her plate. “It was just one thing over another, you know? First she didn’t want to make our relationship public, and when she finally does agree it’s because she was jealous of someone she didn’t need to in the first place. I can’t take it anymore.”

“As much as Jennie is my friend, too, I have to agree with you,” says Jihyo. “You might hate me for saying this, but I just think you weren’t right for each other.”

“No, I don’t hate you, Jihyo. And thanks for telling me the truth. Although I’ve figured out your opinion a long time ago.”

“Sorry,” Jihyo mumbles, chuckling softly.

Mina scans the cafeteria, seeing Momo still lining up for the food, and turns back to Jihyo. “Listen, I’d appreciate it if you won’t tell anyone about this for now. Especially not Momo.”

“Momo? Why not? Do you…”

Mina shakes her head. “I just… I just don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea, you know? Momo and I are actually becoming friends, and I want it to stay that way, at least for now. God knows I need as many friends as I can right now.”

“Okay then. I’m here for you, too, Minari,” Jihyo responds, seeing Momo approaching them. “Hey, Momo.”

“Hey. So, what’d I miss?”

Meanwhile, Sana and Dahyun suspect something amiss with Chaeyoung as they work with Tzuyu all week. First, when they asked if she found Tzuyu pretty, Chaeyoung simply shrugs and acts nonchalant, even though Dahyun keeps noticing Chaeyoung staring at the Design Team representative.

“Maybe Chaeyoung’s weirded out by Tzuyu?” Sana suggests one night, cuddled in Dahyun’s arms.

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

The next time they suspect Chaeyoung is when she declines the invite to go to the pub that Friday night.

“She never misses out on Cheer Up Fridays,” says Dahyun.

“I know,” Sana sighs. “Something’s up with Chaeyoungie, and we should find out what!”

“What if she doesn’t want us to find out? That would be a total invasion of privacy, Sana.”

“What if she’s part of a mafia or something and it’s up to us to save her?”

“Sana, I told you, mafia’s just a game we play,” Dahyun deadpans.

“It could happen!”

And the last straw is when, the next day, Chaeyoung leaves the apartment again, around the same time as she did last week.

“Where are you going?” Sana glances at Dahyun as she asks Chaeyoung who’s already on her way out.

“Oh, uh, I just have to uh, do some stuff,” Chaeyoung answers nervously.

“What time will you be back?” This time it’s Dahyun’s turn to ask.

“I don’t know.” Chaeyoung shrugs. “See you later,” she says as she goes out the door, not waiting for an answer.

Dahyun and Sana look at each other with the same idea in mind.

“Let’s follow her,” they say in unison.

Meanwhile, Mina, Momo, and Jihyo execute their plan that Mina aptly names ‘Operation: 2yeon’. (“2yeon, really?” Jihyo snickers. “Nayeon plus Jeongyeon equals 2yeon—” “We get it, Mina. Let’s just get this over with.”) Jihyo tells the rest of her teammates to subtly leave the Testing Room for a while, while Mina tries convincing Jeongyeon that she needs to go to the Testing Room with her.

“How will you do it?” Momo asks Mina.

“Just leave that to me. You just make sure that neither of those two will be able to electronically unlock the door.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Mina proceeds to Jeongyeon’s office, finding the team leader typing on her laptop. “Hey.”

“Oh, hi, Mina,” Jeongyeon greets back, looking up from her laptop.

“I was wondering if you could go to the Testing Room with me? I just… I need to give something to Jennie.”

Jeongyeon raises an eyebrow, confused. “And you need me to go with you because…”

“Jennie will listen to you. She won’t lash out if I talk to her and you’re there with me.”

“Why will she lash out?” Jeongyeon asks, still confused.

“We broke up.”

“What?”

“Yes, and I’ll explain later but for now don’t tell anyone and come with me!”

Mina grabs Jeongyeon by the hand as she drags her boss out to the Testing Room—Momo following closely behind with her laptop and the device she and Mina had been making for a few days, specifically for this purpose. Jihyo comes out of the room right before Mina makes Jeongyeon enter first. But Mina doesn’t follow and stays outside, locking the door.

“Wait what?” Jeongyeon mutters, finally catching Nayeon’s attention.

“What’s going on?” she says as she approaches Jeongyeon.

Jeongyeon gets a call from Mina. “We’re being set up,” she tells Nayeon before answering her phone, putting it on speaker.

“You two need to work it out,” Mina says. She, Jihyo, and Momo are standing in front of Nayeon and Jeongyeon, separated by the glass wall. “That’s the only way we’re letting you out.”

“I can unlock the door, you know,” Jeongyeon retorts.

Mina smirks at her. “Try, then. Go ahead.”

Jeongyeon takes out her card and puts it next to the sensor, eliciting a long beep and red light blinking twice, indicating an error. Nayeon does the same, but it also results to the same failure.

“Let us out, Myoui,” Nayeon spits.

“Not until you fix your ,” Mina spits back, glaring back at Nayeon.

“Fine,” Nayeon mumbles, giving the rest of the girls hope before she adds, “I’ll just sit here and do my work until you guys give up.”

Momo takes Mina’s phone and speaks up. “Nayeon, we’re really not letting you out of there until you and Jeongyeon talk. We have the advantage here because we’re outside—we’ll have food delivered here if it comes down it! And you guys will be starving!”

Mina and Jihyo chuckle at Momo’s way of convincing Nayeon, because of course she just has to include food in it.

“Nayeon, let’s just do what they say and talk,” Jeongyeon says. “Momo’s really good—I think she’s the only one who can control the doors now.”

“And the computers, too,” Momo adds. “You won’t be able to get any work done now.”

Nayeon groans at hearing this information. “Okay. Let’s talk.”

The three girls rejoice outside the Testing Room.

“Okay, we’ll drop the call now,” says Mina. “We’ll still be here but we’ll give you two the privacy to talk.”

“How can we be sure they aren’t just pretending to make up to come out?” Jihyo asks when Mina keeps her phone.

Mina simply smirks and turns to the other girl beside her. “Momo?”

“On it,” Momo utters, opening her laptop and turning up its volume. “I made a bug that Mina put on Jeongyeon earlier.”

“Privacy, huh?” Jihyo snickers, listening in to the conversation inside the Testing Room.

“Okay,” says Jeongyeon, “knowing Mina, she’s probably thought ahead and bugged the room or something so they can make sure that we’ll actually talk. Just a warning, you know.”

“Why are you assuming that I don’t know? Do you think I’m stupid or something?” Nayeon scoffs.

“Nayeon, please. I don’t want to fight. I just… I just want to know why you’re mad, because I don’t get it. I know you said you just wanted to visit Europe, but I think its quiet lifestyle really suits you. Beside, you’ve always told me that you wanted to teach instead of doing this job. There are many good schools in Germany; I already looked them up.”

“You did?” Nayeon looks at Jeongyeon, her expression already turning soft.

The blonde nods in response. “I really chose that company because, well, I thought it suited you. I’m always think about you, Nayeon.” Jeongyeon takes a step closer to the girl in front of her to caress her face, and Nayeon leans into it.

Sana and Dahyun tail Chaeyoung with a cab, knowing Chaeyoung would recognize Sana’s car. Eventually they follow Chaeyoung into a house in a quiet neighborhood.

“Chaeyoung’s picking someone up on a date!” Sana realizes.

After a few minutes Chaeyoung’s mystery date comes out of her house, revealing herself to Sana and Dahyun.

“Oh my God,” Dahyun mumbles. “It’s Tzuyu! They totally know each other!”

The couple follows the other couple until they stop at a dog pound.

“This is where they’re going for a date?” says Sana, earning a slap from Dahyun.

“Hey, don’t judge. It could be fun, you know.”

“So are we gonna wait for them until they come out?” Sana asks, already sleepy.

“Hmm, let’s just make sure Chaeyoung sees us. I wanna see the look on her face when she finds out that we’ve discovered her secret.” Dahyun attempts an evil laugh.

“You’d make a cute devil,” Sana says as she leans on Dahyun’s shoulder and closes her eyes.

Sana wakes up about two hours later due to a violent shake from the girl beside her.

“Sana, they’re coming out! They’re coming out!”

“Whaaaat?” Sana mumbles, still groggy.

Dahyun turns to the driver. “Let’s pass by the entrance.”

“That was fun, Tzuyu!” Chaeyoung beams at the girl in front of her.

“Really?” Tzuyu asks but looking pleased with herself. “To be honest, I had a backup plan in case you didn’t actually like dogs.”

“Oh? And what would that be—Oh my God.” Chaeyoung sees Dahyun and Sana passing, heads sticking out of their cab.

“What?” says Tzuyu, turning her head around, but Dahyun and Sana’s cab are already far away.

“Nothing, nothing.” Chaeyoung laughs nervously.

I am so screwed, she says to herself.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Dahyun cries when Chaeyoung comes back to the apartment and sees the couple waiting for her.

“Tzuyu and I agreed to keep it a secret!”

Chaeyoung then proceeds to tell Dahyun and Sana the truth—from the speed dating event to taking each other on practice dates. She also tells them that it was Tzuyu’s turn for the date this time, and as per arranged, they can take whoever they want on a date now.

“I saw the way you looked at her, Chaeyoung,” says Sana. “You already like her, don’t you?”

Chaeyoung lets out a sigh before she responds. “Yeah. I do.”

“Did you hear that, Dahyun? Our Chaeyoung is in love!” Sana jumps excitedly.

Dahyun’s about to jump as well when Sana’s phone rings so loudly everyone turns to Sana’s purse.

“Hey Momo? Okay… Yeah, sure, we’ll be there.” Sana removes her phone from her ear and faces Dahyun and Chaeyoung. “Momo says to go Jeongyeon and Nayeon’s. They have an announcement to make.”

“10,000 Won (about 10 USD) says they’re getting married!” Chaeyoung snickers.

Sana drives the three of them to the couple’s house, and finds that they’re the last ones to arrive. Momo, Mina, and Jihyo are already there.

“About time you girls got here!” Momo mutters. “I was getting really hungry!”

“Says the girl who’s already on her third hamburger,” Mina teases.

“Well, my stomach can’t help it!”

“Okay, we’re here,” says Sana, turning to Nayeon and Jeongyeon. “What’s the big announcement?”

“Actually, we have two,” Jeongyeon responds, turning to Nayeon. “Babe, you wanna do the first one?”

Nayeon nods happily, holding Jeongyeon’s hand. “Jeongyeon and I are moving to Germany.”

Sana immediately rushes up to Nayeon and hugs her. “I’m happy for you guys,” she says, tears already filling her eyes. “But I’m really gonna miss you.”

“Hey,” Nayeon mumbles, Sana’s hair, “I’d say I’d miss Casanova Sana too, but I’m happier that Dahyun got you all loyal and faithful now.” Nayeon smiles at Dahyun. “Besides, we still have about two months because of the preparations and everything.”

“You owe me 10,000 Won,” Dahyun whispers to Chaeyoung.

“Speaking of preparations…” Jeongyeon starts.

“Not yet.” Chaeyoung smirks at Dahyun.

“This is an unofficial announcement because Nayeon and I haven’t even filed in my resignation papers yet. But Mina, I want you to be the leader of the Design Team when I leave.”

“Me?” says Mina. “Are you sure?”

“Of course!” Jeongyeon answers. “You showed excellent leadership skills with your ‘Operation: 2yeon’.”

“Wha—How did you—” Mina turns to Momo who has now a guilty look on her face.

“Jeongyeon threatened me!” Momo confesses.

“So,” Jeongyeon speaks again, “are you up for it, Mina?”

“Yeah, I am,” Mina responds after thinking for a while.

Everyone cheers as Nayeon takes out the wine and wine glasses for them to celebrate. Momo watches the scene, thinking about Nayeon and Jeongyeon and how they let their love for each prevail. She also looks at Sana and Dahyun, happily together and staying strong in love. Inspired by these thoughts, Momo leaves the group for a while to make a call.

“Hello? Hey, Seulgi. It’s me, Momo.”

Latest update isn't a new chapter but an update on the latest one. Just included the fact that 2yeon's wedding will be in Switzerland and that Dahyun named her puppy Ari. Hehe! The final chapter is in the works, though!

I liked this quite a bit. Nicely written and the story held my interest until the end. I'm glad this fic was complete when I came upon it because I just have no patience these days (or ever). Mina comes across as a completely cool agent while Momo is warmer ... more relatable. Yet somehow, they still have that special link to each other. I like the way you portrayed their relationship. In fact, I like all the girls' relationships to each other.

Thanks for the enjoyable read.
