Triggers - What are they? Why?
Good Advice to Young Generations From Hyung/OppaPeople say "That triggered me" and I think 'triggers' have become a 'norm' these days with people saying something triggering them when it literally has NO triggering signs what so ever.
Lets talk about what it means to be triggered and get people to stop using it incorrectly...
First off, what is a trigger?
A trigger as defined by meriam webster is an event, smell, thought, or sensation that takes you back in time to a bad moment in your life. (Not exact copying)
This by deffinition is techinically a flashback, not something that makes you uncomfortable, but a literal feeling of being trapped in a time where you are feeling distressed and uneasy.
The amount of people saying something is 'triggering' because it bothers them is dumb.
here are some common triggers:
Violence, Abuse, Bullying, , tramatic scenes, suicide, torture.
here are examples of that is NOT a trigger:
, Hetero, simple disagreements, uncomfortable feelings
Why?
When a person is triggered they are LITERALLY taken back, flashed back to the point that something happened that scared them or hurt them. They are taken back to a time where logic doesn't exist, it's flight or fight and most of them have nervous breakdowns or even panic attacks.
Stop using 'trigger warnings' if your fics don't contain abuse of some form or something that would physically HURT people if they recalled it happening to them.
