the Huntress"God, it's been less than twenty-four hours and I can barely stand mine," I complain to Lissa from across the bar, "he used up all the hot water this afternoon and ate everything in the fridge before I'd even woken up." I sigh loudly, knowing very well that Kai and Byunghyun, rather his self-proclaimed English name, Joey could hear us from where that sat in a booth.
I can hear his low, amused chuckle from here. Bastard.
Lissa laughs, flipping eggs on the stove onto a plate of hash browns and passes them to me, "ketchup?" she asks, but she already knows my answer as the bottle comes sliding over the marble towards me.
"Thanks," I croon, expertly draw several shapes onto my breakfast with the sauce, "how's yours?" It was six pm and we sit int Susie's bar with most of her Hunters surrounding us and whispering about the two demons that sit just meters away from us, scarfing down eggs and potatoes.
"Quiet," Lissa says, already cracking more eggs onto her frying pan, "he definitely didn't use up all the hot water, if that's what you're asking."
I turn to pointedly glare at my new roommate. He grins at me, forking the yolk of an egg into his mouth. In front of him, even the normally stoic Joey has a smile on his face.
"If it makes you feel better," Lissa steps around the bar and sits in the seat next to me, "I've located your next target." My ears perk with interest and she reaches over the countertop for her tablet. She flicks the cover off and shows me her sketch of a massive hall, lit up with fairy lights and decorated with pastel pink balloons.
"Don't tell me it's someone's sweet sixteen date," I sighed, taking the tablet from her.
She shakes her head, "I drew it but I can't discern who the target is," she looks frustrated, "I started over maybe four times." Lissa grabs her stylus and listlessly starts shading one of the girl's dress in vigorously. I grab the tablet then my plate of breakfast before striding up to the two demons that sat across the room, watching us.
"Lesson one. Locating the target," I say, dropping my plate beside Kai's and sliding into the booth beside him, effectively pushing him further inside the booth. He doesn't say anything, just slides closer to the window. I hand the tablet to Joey, "what can you tell me about Lissa's Sight?"
Lissa moves to stand at the opening of the table, her hand twirls her stylus anxiously as Joey scans the drawing. He sets it on the table, looking back up at me.
"It's her Sight, I can't tell you anything other than she's an amazing artist," he tells us. "I can't Sight like Lissa."
I furrow my eyebrows at the man. "Wait. So what can you do?"
"Jesus, Red," Kai says, a pleased look on his face.
"I enhance abilities," Joey tells me, ignoring his friend's annoying remark, "I'm really no help to Lissa unless I can somehow experience her Sight."
Lissa and I exchange looks.
"You can," she says finally and both demons turn to her in surprise, "I can project the Sight, I've never done it to a demon before, but I can try."
"Wait, you can recall your Sightings?" Kai asks, sounding impressed. "And project them?"
Lissa nods, biting her lip.
"I do it a lot, I don't always get enough information for Scarlett to hunt the targets down," Lissa explains, "so we tend to go over the footage a few times."
"Sit," Joey moves to give her space in the booth. "If you can project the Sighting, I can identify the targets," he tells her confidently Lissa nods, taking a seat cautiously and hands him the stylus.
"Mark them," I tell him, "and try to get a location."
Lissa awkwardly offers her hand to him. Joey glances up at Kai and they share a look not unlike what Lissa and I had just done.
"That's not the best idea," Kai says slowly. I furrow my eyebrows and glance between them.
"Why?" Lissa asks, turning to look at Kai, "it's the only way I can project."
"He's a class two, Lissa," I say, realizing his reluctance to touch her, "he represents a deadly sin." Joey nods at me.
"Lust," he says quietly.
"Wow," Lissa snatches her hand away.
"You touch him," Kai tells Lissa. I turn to watch him drop an arm on the headrest of the chair and leans forward, "you should be fine. I don't sense any lust from you and as long as it's you touching him-"
"Are you sure?" I ask and turn to Joey. "Promise not to jump her bones."
Joey and Lissa look up at me. Joey looks surprised, Lissa looks horrified.
"Scar," she hisses. I shake my head resolutely and offer Joey my pinky finger.
"I'm serious," I tell him, "I'll kill you. My rings protect me from whatever demon mojo you have so pinky promise me."
For a second I think he's going to try and smite me with his demon powers but then his mouth curls up into the first smile I've ever seen on his face and he curls his pinky around mine. My rings light up softly but other than the gentle warmth that radiates off the metal, I don't feel anything.
Beside me, Kai exhales a short laugh but I don't move my gaze from Lissa and Joey as I retract my hand, satisfied. Lissa look
