"Your Highness, we have received word of the spies that General Yeung has sent."
"Who are they?"
"All of the spies were confirmed to be women and children. The initial thought of the General was that they wouldn't draw attention due to their weak image but some of the palace guards had caught them rallying during the night to exchange information."
"Round them up and kill them all."
Shocked by the King's orders, the royal guard stood silent for a good minute before trying to reason with him. "But Your Highness, they are just children and women. They don't know how to fight or protect themselves."
"They should have been prepared for what was to come the minute they stepped into Eudaimonia as spies. Any threat to Eudaimonia will not be overlooked."
The royal guard bowed his head at King Jaewoo's words before leaving to inform the other royal guards of their new assignment.
That very night, the royal guards had gone on a rampage to slaughter all those that had been spotted trading information or seen at the rallying. In the midst of the murders, a boy who had moved into town recently ran into the masked men targeting a child. Without a second thought, the boy ran between the masked man and the child whom he recognized from his hometown.
In an ultimate attempt to save the child from the assassins, the boy fought with the masked man. With his martial arts background, he was able to fight off the masked man long enough for the child to escape. His actions saved the child but he, himself, was sacrificed in the process. Another one of the king's assassin witnessed the fight and impaled the boy from behind, sword penetrating through his heart. When the man pulled his sword out, the boy fell limply to the floor before being dragged off by the men and thrown on to a wagon with the women and children who were slaughtered. Every wagon was transported out of the town limits where the bodies were set aflame, only their ashes remaining, carried away by the wind.
The child who had hid himself and watched the happenings, waited until morning before he left Eudaimonia with a few other survivors. Survivors who were in Eudaimonia, not as spies, but as people seeking refuge before a civil war erupts in China.
Meanwhile, through the carnage that his assassins were causing, King Jaewoo sat at his throne, sighing as he considered a scroll from a minister requesting to torture any spy who was caught by Jaewoo's guards.
The one who wears the crown must bear its weight. If that means protecting the wellbeing of Eudaimonia, I will bear the weight so no other has to.
With that thought in mind, he signed the scroll, giving his permission to the minister. They had to find out who the threat was at any cost.
