prologue: Last Shred of Humanity
Another WorldI lived twenty seven years of my life as an assassin hired by the Pope.
I’ve killed more than a hundred people… but killing him would be like killing off my last shred of humanity.
I was orphaned since young, and I felt thankful to the Pope who gave me shelter in his church.
When he asked me to aid him defend the church, I agreed immediately.
I would cut down anyone who dared threaten the existence of this church. Even when I suspected the Pope’s intentions, I put my blind faith that everything he asked of me was for the greater good.
But my only friend Skye… he is just an innocent boy. I stand over him with a dagger in my hand. He is sleeping peacefully, unknowing that I was going to take his life away.
My hand trembles and I could feel cold beads of sweat forming on my forehead. I tell my arms to move, but I’m frozen. The chains of terror wrapped around my body feels so heavy.
I close my eyes, trying to imagine he is someone else. But I feel something pierce my stomach.
“Jonghyun?” Skye drops his dagger and tries to stop the bleeding with his hands.
“Dammit Skye, are you trying to kill me or save me? Choose one and stick with it,” I laughed.
“I didn’t know it was you! If I knew, I wouldn’t have stabbed you,” tears glistened against the soft hue of the moonlight peeking through the open window.
