hyunshin is a very observant person. he's cautious of his surrounding and always be wary of people at all times. you hardly find him with his guard down and this is due to the fact that he was trained to always be on full alert since he was a child. coming from a very wealthy family and the only heir to his mother's company really made Hyunshin into someone who is always on his toes. the only times he really really relaxes is when he's at home with his family.

HIS GRANDMOTHER OFTEN SMACKS HIM FOR HIS WITTY AND SOMETIMES SNAPPY REMARKS. HE IS ONLY LIKE THIS WHEN HE FEELS ATTACKED OR IS BEING DEFENSIVE. HYUNSHIN HAS TRUST ISSUES SO HAVING TO SPOUT SARCASM IS ACTUALLY HIM ACTIVATING HIS DEFENSE MECHANISM. his smart replies would leave people speechless most of the time and sometimes, because of this, he is seen as rude.

the reason why hyunshin is so good in deductions is because his grandmother often do brain teasers with him every day without fail. she fed him with a lot of books and hyunshin has taken interest in mystery books. 

 

A LOT OF PEOPLE FIND HYUNSHIN RATHER RUDE AND ARROGANT, BUT MOST FIND HIM UNSYMPATHETIC. THIS IS BECAUSE HE IS VERY BLUNT AND STRAIGHTFORWARD WITH HIS WORDS. Hyunshin is the only child of Kim mi kyng and seo ji tae. his parents are wealthy on both sides. his father has his own business while his mother was just a housewife. they were a happy family. thinking that he might one day take over the family business (for his father's company), his mother sent him to stay with his grandmother and learn about the business word. he was only 10 years old back then.

 

his parents often visited him and vice versa during his time living with his grandmother. if anything, it had made him more mature, considerate and more lovable towards his family. he learned a lot from his grandmother. on how to read people, to be more alert, to be kinder. because of this, hyunshin couldn't help but to constantly look over his shoulder since he already how things really work.

 

most of the time, his grandmother would sit down with him and they would do puzzles together, mind teasing game to sharpen hyunshin's mind and sense. they would watch a lot of documentaries as this is one of the ways of her teaching him. But hyunshin doesn't really mind, in fact, to his surprise, he likes it. one of his grandmother's employee was an ex-soldier, and hyunshin looked up to the man as he looked up to his own father. he often told hyunshin to look for a back door in shops or restaurants in case he needed to escape from any harm. being the only heir to two very wealthy families isn't easy.

"use it as a mirror. be observant. be alert of your surroundings, hyunshin. you are the only heir, i am old, i cannot protect you."

One night, at the age of 16, hyunshin fell asleep in the study room only to be woken up by the sound of a familiar voice talking. out of curiousity, he crept out of the room and quietly follow where the voice came from. imagined his shock to see his mother crying to his grandmother in the middle of the night.

 

"how could he do this to me? have i not given my all?" she sobbed. "how could Ji Tae do this to me?" those were the words that was repeated by his mother over and over again as she cried and her mother embraced her. when the tears stopped, his mother could only look at her mother in the eyes and say. "i'll do it. i'll take over the company."

 

The next day, hyunshin pretended to not know anything and didn't even ask about his mother's red eyes and puffy face. he didn't even question her disheveled look. instead he smiled and give her a peck on the cheek and reminded her of how much he loves her and how beautiful she is. he reminded her how special she actually was.

 

a few days after the incident, hyunshin decided to meet up with his father. he was waiting at the cafe and prayed that when he had concluded wasn't true. prayed that what he deducted wasn't true. he didn't know how to handle it. but the moment his father came into his sight, hyunshin's hope washed away. he didn't even wait for his old man to sit down when he abruptly stood up and left the cafe. his father chased after his, wondering why his son suddenly left but hyunshin was annoyed. he was angry while ji yae was confused why his teenage son was angry at him.

 

"how could you do that to mom? how could you stab her in the back like that?!"

"she told you, then."

"she doesn't have to. where's your wedding ring, appa? where is it?!" at this point, hyunshin raised his voice a little, which attracted a number of people. "why aren't you wearing the wedding ring? huh? why do you smell like a woman's perfume- this isn't a man's cologne! this isn't even mom's!"

"how-"

"this is just a simple deductions based on the obvious. I can go on by the look of your finger, by the crumple of your collar, by the look on your face too. stay away from me, stay away from mom. stay away from us. a divorce letter will come to you soon."

"is this based on your so-called deductions?"

"no. this is based on how well i know mom."

 

his parents indeed got a divorce and Hyunshin immediately changed his surname from Seo to Kim, his mother's surname. he loved his father very much but it was hard for him to forgive the old man. but as soon as he found that his father had remarried two months after the divorce, hyunshin's anger turned into hate and he cut ties with the old man.

 

hyunshin stayed with his mother and grandmother and planned to take on the family business one day. he worked harder and studied smarter than any other kids in his school because he wasn't born a genius. hyunshin couldn't even speak or talk properly until he was seven. he acknowledged his weakness and was able to graduate with flying colours, ranking second place in his regional area.

 

He wasn't sure which university to attend but when he heard his cousin was attending the bolin university out of the blue, he thought why not join her as well? for the first time, hyunshin would really be away from his family. he could've chosen any other university in korea but no. at least, in bolin nobody knows his except for his cousin and that's what he wants. nobody knows him being the heir to a very wealthy company.

After the war ended, sung kyum had trouble adjusting to civilian life so he ended up working for the Kim family. when beomseok passed away, he was lost for a brief a while as he looked up to the man, to his best friend. he was given the chance to start a new by hye ja but he chose to stay and serve the kim family. he had been with the family for three generations and now mentoring hyunshin on the basic surviving skill. hyunshin is attached to him as he has no father figure in his family and sung kyum is the only male family member that he has.

"you don't know him so you don't have the right to say anything bad about him. if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all."

he was moved by sungyeol's actions, the two weren't even close, they didn't even talk to each other but sungyeol took his side. that night, hyunshin treated sungyeol to dinner and the two actually talked for the very first time and hyunshin thought maybe sungyeol wasn't so bad after all.

hyunshin nearly had a heart attack when he found out about his cousin's crush. he didn't mind but he wasn't sure if it was alright. if anything he didn't want her to get hurt or in trouble. when hyunshin first met ji sub, he was very wary of the man but based on his observation, he found that ji sub was a very decent and down to earth guy. ji sub didn't annoy him too, probably because he was very mature and a lot older than them. the two often talk, nothing useless, educational most of the time and hyunshin had taken a liking towards the guy.

"i wouldn't say favourite... but rhi cafe and the forest? because eunrin is always there... and i, i just tag along with her but i wouldn't say they're my favourite... i don't think i have one."

"anywhere there's sungyeol." /jokingly answered. "but really, i'm not sure myself. i guess the cafeteria? it's too noisy and the people... i just don't like it, they like to approach me. i just don't like it."

"eunrin to be precise. she dragged me to the first meeting and i'm only in it because she begged me too."

"hm, i think it's actually great that there's a club like this. people helping each other out and to actually talk about things. i'm not good at things like this but there's no harm in doing my best."

"no actually, i only come down if eunrin asked me too. but with the club meeting and all that, i guess... i am turning into one?"
