Love/Hate Relationship With Character Profiles

Does anybody else feel this?

A lot of the stories on AFF have character profiles in the description/foreword (heck, I do too).

But they either take me to the next chapter or makes me click 'back'.

So I'm kind of torn against whether it's really... a strategical thing to have them in the first place?

Sometimes, reading the profiles of unique/interesting characters grabs my attention and I DO continue to read.

Sometimes, the only reason I read is to see how the characters interact with each other, BASED on what I got of them through their PROFILES.

Plus, I think it's a solid lazy writer's way out of creating a separate forward for your story. A device, if you will XP

But at other times (or most of the time), the profiles include a buttload of information I'd rather get by reading the content of the story. 'Na what I mean??

To explain, there's two different profiles for the main charac. and her best friend. I don't really care much for the best friend when I'm trying to find something to read, so I skim over it. Then when I get to reading the body of the story, there's this random name that comes up from nowhere with no introduction and I'm lost. So I go back to the foreward and turns out it's the best friend. Totally ruins the flow of reading for me.

(Is it my fault for not reading the profiles? >>;;)

Or, or, they include the character's life stories in the description of their profile. Where they were born, who and who died in their family, why they're living alone, whether they're the nerd of the school or what not (>_>). If I only clicked on the story to look at it experimentally, to see if it's any good, I am really really really lazy to read all that, truth be told. And it really gets on my nerves when they allude to the character's background when they didn't establish ANY of it in the ACTUAL STORY.

To add with the laziness thing, I also really get lazy to read the profiles of the minor characters, especially when there's like 10 of them. And the most cruel thing is that the author writes their story so that without reading the profiles, I feel like I'm missing some information as I read. T_______T

Can anybody else relate to my feeelllsssss?

Or am I talking to myself again? Oh well, might as well. LOL

At least I feel better having vented a little bit

I JUST REMEMBERED. While I'm venting, I might as well get this out too.

Some users on AFF had the nerve to subscribe to me, msg me being all friendly and how they love my story, ask me to check out their stories, and when I didn't subscribe to their stories for whatever reason, UNSUBSCRIBED FROM ME.

(And honestly, the reason I didn't subscribe was because until yesterday, I had this thing where I didn't want to be mean to anyone, so it was like, "Subscribe to all of them, or don't subscribe to any of them". Which kind of backfired on me, so now I just decided to subscribe to what I like)

(but then again, I'm also still really picky about what I'm willing to subscribe to)

ANYWAYS. It quite literally pissed me off, not because they unsubscribed or didn't like my writing, or anything like that. I just felt used! *sniff* I actually took all their compliments to heart and was leaping for joy, only to realize that they didn't mean one inch of it and just wanted to advertise their own fanfic. There's no shame in advertising, but at least be up front about it instead of trying to befriend me so I'll be nicer to you, right??

Bah humbug.

It's not really that big of a deal I suppose. I'm not like, losing sleep over it but it's still quite annoying to know there are people like that on AFF.

SHAME FINGER.

@--yeoshin: Awesome to know that I'm not alone in my thoughts xD and LOL you must run away from a lot of stories here on AFF then (which is really... kind of sad. like you said, more than half of this website is so... so... frustrating, as a reader)

and omg, my thoughts exactly!! I guess this IS a place for fanfic and all so it's more lenient, but STILL! xD

I know, right? ahhhh

@fxluna: LOL I'm sure there's that too, authors being lazy haha but some of the descriptions are like, essays, so maybe they're NOT lazy o_O looool

@ricecakes70: sigh.... I hope you don't come across any of them

I understand you, it's pretty tricky from a writer pov. But I think you can still have character descriptions if you utilize it well enough, if that makes any sense at all. As long as the main writing can stand on its own without the descriptions, it shouldn't be... too bad? :P

Woo, I absolutely agree. However, whenever I see a story with character profiles, I usually run as fast as possible (well, not literally) and never look back, haha. Stories like that usually lack quality, which is more than the half of this website, unfortunately. I mean when you read a book, do you have all the character traits on the first page, no, lol.

And omg those people are so pathetic, tsk tsk, shame on them.

haha. I get what you mean. I personally dislike character profiles. It seems as if the author is too lazy to create a formal intro for each characters. haha.
