[I see the fire Inside your eyes] something anyone who sees devan will notice is the air that follows him, the footsteps that are assertive, and the eyes that can bring down even the coldest of people. he just has an aura to him that oozes charm, drawing people's attention to him and not just because of his looks or tall height (though those factors do enhance his aura even more). he is a strong character, anyone can tell and many who have grown close to him can vouch for that since devan seems to be from a different world. devan knows and catches such things around him quick, he's able to respond, think, and act quickly in any environment or situation. many would say that it's only expected from a professor's son, but he brushes off that fact. he is his own person and he's astute enough to know how to deal with different people in different circumstances. he has the gift of observing and feeling born from his seemingly built-in sense to care and nurture others. he loves people, they excite him but he's also not the most loud person in the room. devan's just there to hype you up but everyone knows that devan will have their back. being around people gives devan an environment in which he can carry out his purpose as a friend, son, brother, student, and artist but to say that he can get along with everyone is idealistic for devan. those who know him in and out will know that devan's mind stays true to life. he understands what can and cannot be, knowing how to set goals that are achievable and keeps his head on earth rather than in the clouds. he's pragmatic but it works every time you'd need practical advice and emotional support together. even if the truth stings, devan knows that you need it more than you think.

[Don’t need to hide From letting go] it's strange to find out that devan loves to care and nurture others when he himself has difficulty or slow speed in opening up. it's an interesting combination and not many would notice it as they only see devan as their caretaker and reliable comrade. devan rarely talks about himself and he may not be as outspoken about his own feelings as he is about other things in his life. possibly, this may be his defense mechanism that he applies unknowingly. he fears being scarred or hurt by others as he knows the price to pay for letting people come to you for advice and support is your own dissatisfaction personal emotional expression. he's just slower in opening up and when he does, it is a grand gesture that devan trusts you since he's often reluctant to speak of his own critics of himself. he's just too hard on himself, seeing that he feels rushed or urged in pressuring to be the epitome of perfection. he needs to take it slow with his own thoughts but he doesn't want to fall behind. he's stubborn, strongly holding on to his own beliefs, opinions, and judgement. setting aside from his reluctance to express his feelings, he's very upfront about his opinions on other things during work hours and born a dominant and strong character, he's standing within the fine lines between an argument and pointing out mistakes. he doesn't pick arguments or debates, it's just that he's not hesitant to tell you what he thinks about the situation as he holds on to the bitter and real truth as his base of his views. the most scary part is he's open to criticism when deep down, hearing such from others will only worsen his inner emotional turbulence even more as it feeds into that black hole.

[CHILDHOOD] you could say that devan shin daeyoung had an easier life, staying afloat from the wages his parents earned; his father a highly experienced IT professor while his mother a respected middle school teacher (that could be understatement, as actually, they're in the higher middle class). he may seem like an ordinary kid in chicago but compared to the kids back in south korea, his life can be seen as lavish or comfortable. he and his sister, daniella shin dahee were one of the few asian kids in their schools and devan thrived being around the other kids. he wasn't born to be an introvert. he could be seen as the asian jock, a part of the baseball team and enjoyed going for a swim every now and then. his sister, daniella was definitely an abg in the making while devan was more rooted to his korean culture as he enjoyed helping his mom cook korean food and every other week, the shin household gather to play heads-up using korean words while eating some homemade korean fried chicken.

[INTEREST IN K-POP] frankly, devan was never interested in music, let alone k-pop but he didn't have a strong passion going forward to the future just yet. he wasn't really interested in anything so much that he wanted to make a living out of it. perhaps, a writer? perhaps, a journalist? perhaps, a barista? he was lost, really, unlike his sister daniella. she knew what she wanted to study in university and then what career she wanted to take. she wanted to become a marine biologist and she believed in her dreams, potential, and abilities. as he compared himself to her, deep down, devan envied her and wanted the same for himself. so, when he lost a bet with his friends and auditioned for sm entertainment in 2010, he didn't mind. well, he didn't expect to pass but when his parents heard of the news, they were joyful.

"that's the best agency in south korea, ever! congrats, son!" they told him.

his sister daniella cooed at him, "i didn't thought your cat-faced jocky look would get in but... congrats."

so, fifteen year old devan saw himself on a flight to seoul, south korea as he headed to start a new life alone as a trainee at sm entertainment. the rest became history.

devan's aura during his time training at blockberry creative was different. he was confident and relaxed in his demeanour but didn't let his guard down. it was just a different feeling. he knew he was debuting, unlike when he was in sm entertainment. he still put in as much effort and time to his training as he did in sm entertainment, knowing that he had to reinforce his position in solis even further. he couldn't give them a gap that can make them reconsider.

[becoming a trainee in SM ENT] that summer in 2010, devan found himself flying to seoul alone to start his training at the biggest agency in south korea, sm entertainment. he was able to fly back and forth from chicago to seoul during the summer and winter breaks due to the financial ability of his family. this routine of his continued until he graduated from high school before he became a full-time trainee who resided 24/7 in seoul. all throughout his time in sm entertainment, he trained himself so hard and learned the concept of self-discipline for the first time as he was taught such concepts (along with ethics, manners, and self introspection) as a part of the training system in sm entertainment. it was difficult, of course as he threw away a part of his asian jock high school life to become a trainee and after graduating high school, he cut the thread between him and possibly enrolling into university. devan did felt homesick and lonely but the bonds he forged, the memories made, and the habits he shared with the other trainees comforted him a bit. he continued to keep an open mind as he learned and spent extra time after hours to practice by himself.

[DECIDING TO LEAVE SM ENT] despite the open mind and curiosity he carries, he knows himself well enough to figure out when it's time for him to rest or stop hoping. five years into his trainee life at sm entertainment, he has yet to see signs of his debut (at the time, the trainees have yet to hear plans of a new boygroup debut, as in the nct concept) and he didn't make it into exo's debut lineup. he was jealous, to be frank, to see his close hyungs debut and he watched their concerts, stages, and listened to their albums while admiring the success they obtained in exchange for their hard training. he didn't hate it, but it hit his mind and heart a lot when chen and baekhyun, two trainees with much less training periods than him, debuted over him. he knew that he might've not fit the concept of the exo universe but it hurt his expectations when he confirmed it with his own eyes and perhaps, things could've been different if he was a bit more patient to wait a bit more (if so, he could've made it into nct). he was an ambitious twenty year old with a short fuse and strong heart at the time and he just had it so he decided to leave the agency that housed him, helped him nurture his skills, and improved him. despite this, he still looks back the memories of the past five years behind him with a fond heart, cherishing them as his stepping stones.

[THE MOVE TO BLOCKBERRY CREATIVE] he wanted to start anew, move on to an agency where he could be a top dog. of course, he had the confidence and charisma when he first came in as a trainee at blockberry creative mainly due to his painstaking endurance at sm entertainment. in fact, thorn can vouch for this as he and tai did think devan was a bit intimidating at first since they did hear about devan coming from sm entertainment. devan was somewhat relaxed inside as he knew he'd have a bigger chance at blockberry creative. he was practically brought in to prepare for his debut. he knew that he had to wait for loona's long reveal project and unit promotions to wrap up before the agency could announce solis but deep inside his mind, he knew he wasn't going anywhere. that's why he had a different approach this time. he tried to interact with everyone, improve his music production, and just be a figure that everyone sees essential in a team. he wanted to lead and as if the agency could hear his thoughts, they indeed brought him into a meeting room one day and told him, "we're going to make you a leader, seeing as you've done so over the past three years and you also have experience and is an english speaker."

[predebut experiences] before he went out of sm, he filmed the mv for 'switch' with the other sm rookies trainees who have now debuted as nct. sadly, for him, the mv itself was released later way after he left sm and nct had branched into nct dream and nct 127.

▹ 2easy (ft.chuu) ◃ a song he'd release in the fall, depicting a desperate man trying to reach out to his lady for the last time as he begs her not to leave him. honestly, he was writing this song from the perspective of his mother or family who didn't want to let him go to korea all alone and struggle yet but if he must leave, their last wish for him is to be happier there and to be able to do whatever he wants before deciding if he wants to go back or not. those who know him might've suspected something was up with him and haseul but that's not at all the case. he just needed to make the song more painful than it already was by adding a romantic tone to it instead of a realistic slice-of-live one. to add more hype or listeners to it, he even had chuu feature on it as her voice compliments his and it'd be a nice opportunity for them to showcase their musicality through the song.

[role in the solisverse] devan would be perceived a villain, a backstabber, the ringleader of the darkness' front lines by the light side of solis. how could he not? he was collecting materials and exploring the woods like he usually did and suddenly, disappeared. everyone saw the devastation on llum's eyes when they returned from the search with empty hands. for his former light comrades, to see him emerge as a part of the darkness was a wake-up call, something that made their heart sink. even someone like devan could fall into the darkness. to the dark side of solis, his presence is a blessing. they have found a presence that could be held on the pedestal, the vanguard of their side. devan's darkness was explosive. he was powerful, he would be the ringleader of the darkness.
 

▹the counterpart: llum ◃ devan didn't really want to go to the darkness, he didn't want to leave llum behind. not llum, his great friend, his partner in crime, his younger brother. but something within him moved and flinched at the sight of darkness. there devan went, taking a step into the darkness and leaving llum behind. he felt guilty, having been blinded by every bittersweet sentiment inside him but the deed was done. he knew llum was going to hate him for this but deep down, he knew llum could learn and grow from this. to become his own light, his own sun, his own guidance without him. it was time for them to grow into their own destinies, but who knew it'd be on the opposite side of things? knowing llum too well, devan knew the purity in llum's heart would tell him to try and bring him back into the light. the question is, is devan willing to go back to the life in the light by then?

▹the dark side of solis ◃ devan as dion was born and raised as a part of the light side and he grew up to become the courage and bravery that the others looked up to. he was an expert of the woods, hunting and collecting materials from it on a daily basis but inside, he was repressing so much. he started to tire out, burnt out inside from everything he's inclined to do for everyone in the light. he didn't want to disappoint but he was starting to see that he isn't the person everyone else made of him. if they knew what he was thinking and feeling, would they be disappointed? he pulled through for llum's sake, though. he was able to hold on because of llum but turns out, that wasn't enough. he switched to the dark side on an otherwise ordinary day; he stepped into the darkness when he was at the woods alone. he flinched at the sight of darkness but then, he smirked. he could no longer repress the feelings he felt. he walked to the dark side and in that moment, finally, the heaviness inside him and the invisible cloud over him was gone. he felt free and incredible.

[THE STORIES] 

▹ liberated ◃ the first few seconds show a starry night sky, black and white before moving onto the silhouette of dion lying down on his back. this is him after he falls to the darkness, lying on the ground looking at the dark starry night sky. he is content as he is fully consumed by the darkness. but deep inside, perhaps his purity and positivity he had when he was in the light is still inside him. although now, it is scribbled on and overshadowed by his complicated inner feelings. dion knows but he is reluctant to face it all  and it shows as he sings the line, "oh life can get so complicated".

his inner light, his inner purity and positivity lights a match amidst all the darkness. it's trying to find a path back into the light but dion has not yet come to terms with it. the door leading into the light seems to disappeear and re-appear every few seconds and he hates it. he doesn't even look at it. he starts to get up, being empowered by the darkness inside of him. dion wants to let go of his past. he wants to grow into his present and walk into his future. as he walks further into the woods, he's trying to make himself one with the nature that he loves so much. slowly but surely, he starts to open the door to the light. not for him to walk into, for his inner light to go but it's still reluctant, chained down by the remorse of leaving everything he's ever known and lived for behind. 

the green leavese, trees, and sound of nature surrounds dion. he finds a path to a spot that shows a scenic view of everything behind that patch of the woods. he's surprised to see that morning has arrived. he takes everything in, all the beauty of nature he enjoyed alone. he now enjoys it with both the light he's repressing and the darkness he's wrapped in. after that dark starry night, dion smirked. he forgot that he was still wearing the white shirt llum gave him. he sings the line, "everything will be alright", as he only has all the nature in front of him to look forward to, with the darkness. dion's inner light is seen standing in front of the door leading into the light but as it senses what's on the other side, it crumbles. so does dark dion but slowly, light dion inside comes into terms with his choice. he no longer regrets anything and so, all the scribbled complications within light dion is erased by his darkness. 

the chains that held all of his remorse are loosened. it's time for dark dion to move on and live the way he's always wanted to and for light dion to stop being remorseful and bitter. light dion opens the door to the light and is met with the same scenic view that dark dion has been enjoying. they merge. dion now has been freed from the chains of his internal struggles. in a black and white sequence, dion closes the door and he disappears, representing the end of the struggle between light dion and dark dion.

everything fades into black. 

dion is now liberated from complicated feelings that chained him when he was in the light.
 

▹ color drive ◃ the multiple figures shown in the span of the first eight seconds can be linked to the other members in their respective locations in the soliverse. dion is seen lying down on an extravagant carpet with a hat covering his face as he starts to spit out the opening verse. the shot then goes to him in a very retro-colored car as the song is entering its easy-listening chorus. the video continues to show dion in the car as the backgorund becomes of a universe. this is a continuation of the story for dion as the starry universe is the background of the video along with the easy-listening and upbeat music playing portrays how he is now enjoying his time in the darkness and becoming one with it. dion continues to sway happily to the music in his car.

the words "somewhere in a different galaxy" and a satelite is shown on the screen. "planet 737" then appears while showing a man wearing a hat similar to the one dion's wearing. the man is struggling as strong winds have brought him down to his knees. the so-called "planet 737" seems to be a lonely desert as the man is alone (despite the video later showing the so-called inhabitants of this planet). this can be potrayed as how dion is enjoying the darkness while this man is struggling to stand on his feet wherever this planet may be or whatever struggle he's facing. this man could easily be licht, foreseeing how dion will be the one who pulls him to the darkness.

the video continues to show dion, transitioning from many colors and the car also transcending all sorts of colors and textures while still on a drive. the video becomes very distracting as dion is shown playing the keyboard or piano reff.

the man wearing the hat is seen walking to dion's car in the never-ending desert. could this be licht, being found by dion amidst his inner struggles, now going to the darkness?

another man whose only showing his silhouette is standing in a more lighter and blue place in the water. could this be llum on the other side of all this darkness and desert?

the video cuts out to dion turning off a radio broadcast now in a place where the sun ray is visible. dion walks out of his car and starts to walk along the share of whatever place he is. the words "to be continued..." is shown on screen, perhaps in order to create suspense or hype for the next video of the next b-side. however, while the words appear, we can also see the retro car dion was driving plunge into water, drowning.
 

[NOTES] 

▹ liberated ◃ the white door portrays the door that leads back to the light and the woman wearing white showed in the video potrays dion's purity or positivity that is "chained up" or surrounded by the darkness that now consumes him. many would interpret the lyrics to this song as a song for a loved one whose facing difficulty and hardship and devan agrees but he'd also like to add that he's also singing this song for himself, for devan shin and for dion. all the nature shots depict the connection between dion and dionysus. in the soliverse, this depicts the courage and bravery dion possesses as dion is one with the nature, always have and always will be. nobody can take that away from him. also, he chose to show his vocals in his reveal song because in his b-side, he'll be showcasing more of his flow.

▹ color drive ◃ despite the song being titled "color drive", the colors within the video still carry out a dark undertone or saturation. this potrays dion's stance in the soliverse.

[ending comments] hello, sien, i hope you liked him and i hope you don't mind the wait for this app to drop since the motivation for devan was on-again, off-again. i realized half way in the background that i didn't add his sister, daniella whose a year older than him in the relationship section but know that the two siblings are super chill with each other and that she'll definitely become a big solis fan (her bias is probably going to be thorn).

the song lyrics are a mix of lany's nobody else, nive's liberated, dpr live's geronimo! (geronimo!), and nct 127's not alone.
