N to S Comparison S02 E15: The One With The Whale and Dolphin

---------------------------- Novel to Series Comparison -----------------------------

Lovesick Season 2, Episode 15: The One With The Whale and Dolphin

Chapters: 37 & 38 (2/3 and 7/8)

I found this episode interesting. Here’s the thing. Did I like it? Technically yes I did but I also hate it. Not because the plot or anything wasn’t good. I hate it because there were so many changes from the novel and I have to make this review extra-long. But from just a viewing episode stand point it was pretty good. It left the core idea of each plot intact. THAT OPENING THOUGH! I LOVE IT! Also lighting and angles in this episode are 5 times better than last week’s. I hope they keep it like this till the season ends.

Differences and Missing/Added Parts

1.) The morning after

Kind of a nitpicking but these moments stuck out like sore thumbs for me. The novel had the boys all sleep over at Noh’s but go home after lunch. That would be acceptable for me if they went that route. Have the specific scene with Ohm and Noh and then proceed with the plot. With PerWin going home I’m completely okay with though. It doesn’t change the main plot and it opens up drama for their side story.

The description in the novel’s morning after, however, is different. Everyone is supposed to be hung over and half because they slept in the living room where it’s hot. Not that I wanted it just to see some skin but if you’re going to have a scene showing two dudes showering together, you might as well go all out and have the novel version of everyone either in their boxers or even just shirtless with just their blue shorts on or maybe have open shirts.

Anyone else notice Khom evaporated into thin air? It’s like he poked his head out for the last two episodes just to say, “I’m still alive audience” then disappeared. Can we also talk about how much these guys can eat considering they’re supposed to be hungover? They eat a ton for a late breakfast then they go out to eat lunch again? I would be throwing up everywhere. The scene of them eating while the music was playing also felt awkward to me. Maybe because nothing was really happening that seemed “fun” that would warrant the passing of time kind of music or Captain’s strange smile/laughter while things are going on but it felt really weird watching.

2.) NOhm

I made that damn meme and no one batted and an eye and I knew this scene would be coming up. Now everyone goes crazy over it when the raws come out? Some people (-_-).

Anyways, back to why it’s part of this section. Everyone’s probably thinking, “Huh? But this scene is part of the novel and they copied it almost word for word”. True, however the reason why it’s here is for one reason. CONSISTENCY. Novel NOhm has Noh as not giving a damn about showering with other dudes. He’s even proud about it. Even in season 1 and in season 2 episode 4 they say that Noh has no problem showering with his close friends. So, why is it that when Ohm popped into the shower he became all squeamish?

They try to touch back on how long Ohm and him have been friends but it makes their closeness even more confusing. Novel Them have been showering together since forever and in some places that’s totally normal. Swimming in lakes and rivers with your close guy friends, without malice, is common in certain cultures, especially in Asia. The series explains that NOhm haven’t showered together since they were little. It just makes it more confusing about their friendship. The core conversation they had however is still good but the consistency on how they handled their reactions to each other while taking a shower together annoyed me.

3.) PhuNoh meet up

I’ll keep this one short. Novel had Noh go to the supermarket and run into Pang and Phun. Pang forces Noh to go home with them and PhuNoh have their conversation. Series had it different. Pang tells Noh to talk to her brother out of concern. Not much to say but Noh kind of just ditched his friends to see Phun which is okay I guess. Conversation is basically the same so I’m happy about that but they added more scenes for Phun that I’m fine with. I Laughed my off seeing that random bird fly into the window. It’s like it was saying, “Oh my God he’s being mopey again. Kamizakee Mode Activated” and missed his target. All in all PhuNoh’s interaction was touching.

4.) PoPang

Finally! Although it’s not technically in the novel but it needs to be addressed because of how different Series Pang was from Novel Pang. I have been calling the Pang Gang crazy because they were acting like radical religious people. Be gay or face our wrath. Although Novel Pang had those tendencies sometimes, she was innocent and just really wanted to help her brother be happy. From the start of this season she was being a crazy person, forcing her ideals onto everyone. It was getting grating and I usually would just turn my brain off when they’d come on.

This episode however, I freaking loved her. This was the Pang I wanted. She wasn’t over aggressive or irritating. Her interaction with Noh wasn’t out of a selfish act to have her BL couple be fulfilled. She knew that Noh was basically the only person that can make her brother feel better so she asked, not forced, him to visit him when he has the time. It was genuine concern and it didn’t stem from her joy of seeing them together like that.

Then we have the PoPang dynamic. I’m going to straight up say. I loved it. From Pop getting interested in the things she is, buying a cosplay type swim wear just so she’d notice, inviting her to swim just from the mere mention she’d fall in love with the person who’d invite her, the gifting of the whale and dolphin trinkets just from the reference and their ending text messages. I SHIP IT! I really do. The sheer irony is funny as well. The girl who likes to force guys into couples is falling for a guy couple she’s been zealously defending. That’s pretty hilarious. Also they get points for the Kuroko no Basket and FREE! references. I’ve watched both animes and read the manga for Kuroko so seeing them mention it was amaze balls.

5.) Aim, I’m done with you

I’ve had it. OFFICIALLY! I’ve been on a weird rollercoaster with this chick this season. It ranged from okay, to I sympathize with her to, Bye Felicia, take your hooker shoes with you. The Hua Hin episodes are what started it. It opened the idea that maybe Series Aim is just more than her novel counterpart. She has depth and it was only a onetime thing. She even seemed guilty about it when talking to Phun. But then she does stupid like trying to sleep with Noh while recording evidence. Ugh I hate her. Then a few more episodes roll by. Aww she’s worried about her friend Yuri. She might be horrible with boys but she has her friend’s back at least. Your character has just elevated from scum to dirt. That’s a step forward. Then this episode rolls on in. Nope. I’ve had it. The only thing interesting is that they explain why her tape wasn’t spread like wild fire (however it begs the question how can Golf send a link to Noh via an internet link if it was spread already? Also, more than 4 other clips with more than 4 different guys and it's not on the internet? I highly doubt). Now she’s going to sleep with the original “white rabbit” from freshie camp from the looks of it. Basically all my sympathy for you has flown out the window and into a wall like Phun’s new pet bird. Bye B!tch. Let the door hit your on the way out, knocking you off a 10 story building with jagged rocks at the bottom. :v

Personal Opinion:

The amount of changes from novel to series made writing this episode’s review kind of a pain in my . I could have totally finished up a chapter with the time it took me to write this up but I still enjoy my reviews as much as I like writing my fanfics. :)

Not much to say once you’ve nitpicked this episode’s differences from the chapter it’s based off of to death. I guess I can just brush up on two things.

PerWin’s drama is understandable. Next episode I’m going to sound like a freaking broken record because I’ve shared my opinion on their actions so openly. It was surprising to see Win’s mom since everyone assumed that his mom either died or left the family. In the special chapters she’s never mentioned at all which led everyone to come up with that conclusion so I was just as shocked as everyone else. It really messed up the continuity a bit with fanfics related to Win’s personal life.

Mo seems to be walking around the mall the night after MoLf became official. She saves Aim from a guy who’s totally into Aim (it really makes you wonder why she didn’t go for him considering she’s been worried about Phun losing interest in her). It may just be my mind making weird observations but I think Mo saved Aim from him was because she saw a lot of herself in Aim when the guy was pulling at her arm. Kind of like how outraged and angry a person who’s gotten out of an abuse relationship becomes when they see it happen in front of their eyes. It’s a hate that stems from not wanting to see that person look like they did when they were stuck in that situation and how it affected them emotionally. It’s just a speculation but I’d like to think that’s the route they were going with.
