N to S Comparison S02 E09: The One With The Cuttlefish

---------------------------- Novel to Series Comparison -----------------------------

Lovesick Season 2, Episode 9: The One With The Cuttlefish

Chapters: 30 (half)

So going off from last episode, it’s a good episode but for the reasons that it shouldn’t be. We are focusing on the wrong couples, which is good for the side shippers (we all have a side ship we love), but when it starts out shinning the main, I’d be scared if I was P’Hed or the production team.

Differences and Missing/Added Parts

1.) SIDE SHIPS EVERYWHERE!

So this is good addition but also a bad one. Good, just because we are all loving the OhMick and PetEarn scenes. Even if their scenes are short, the chemistry is astounding. Ngern is a great actor and August has improved a lot since last season, so their on screen interaction amplifies their scenes and makes you believe they are close friends and a possibility of something growing from it. Same for Na and Min. Na is the better actor in the couple but since he’s playing off Min’s innocent character well, they complement each other. The negative, however, is the drama between the main couple is getting out shined because a certain feeling they’re giving off. I’ll explain more later on.

2.) You may be rich like Batman, but stop with all the angst Phun

I get it. I’ve always had a set of rules when watching/reading Lovesick that applies to 99% of why a character is acting the way they are. Rule 3: Phun = Insecure. This has always been the case as it’s a trait he has which explains why he gives Noh the cold shoulder at certain times. The problem is, although White portrays angst, anger, and jealousy amazingly, it’s not the only trait Phun has. The character is staying very true to the novel in those aspects, however it gets boring and grating seeing a main character we like for being very complex, stay 1 dimensional because you’re portraying them being in those same emotions all the time.

3.) The Riding of Emotions

I have a big issue with it. If they would have stuck to the novel, Phun and Noh are on good terms after the Hua Hin trip. They talk like friends but Phun is enlightened with the fact that he loves Noh and Noh is conflicted and distracted with how to tell Phun the truth about Aim. However, since they added the last 10min or so of Phun hearing Noh talk about Aim (rightfully so), and the ambiguity of their relationship, it’s made watching them boring. Hear me out. The next few chapters were supposed to be a period of peace. A breather before drama ensues again. We’re supposed to be happy they’re on good terms with less awkwardness when interacting in front of people. Now, let’s go to the series. What did they do? They added Earn drama that wasn’t really needed. It’s nice to see Earn and Noh interact but it doesn’t have to equal jealousy for Phun. So to recap the past few weeks, Phun and Noh’s relationship has just been, “I love you”, “I hate/am jealous”, “I love you”, “I hate/am jealous”. Although they are on the opposite sides of the emotion spectrum, the repetitiveness is boring. That’s why everyone pays attention to the side ships more. We want to be surprised or let to breathe with the characters we’re invested with. Not just see them kiss or hug each other the night before, then become complete asses to each other the next day because one of them made googly eyes at someone else. Let us and the characters be stagnant on how they feel about each other for at least an episode or 2 please.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Douchest Teacher in the World:

1st – Jeed will be class representative because she has more screen time than Grace
2nd – Lhew will be class representative because you’re way better than Grace
3rd – Nan will be class representative because anyone besides Grace (j/k)
Teacher: No one likes Grace.

Positives the Episode brought:

- Scenes with Earn and Pete

- Scenes with Ohm and Mick

- The two flamboyant gay boys (the inner voice of the fans)

- Grace (proving the writers can come up with borderline psychopathic characters)

- No Pang Gang

Overview:

1.) 2 Ships gain speed while the biggest one is falling behind

2.) Phun = Bruce Wayne without dead parents

3.) Even a rollercoaster gets boring after riding it 10 times.

Personal Opinion:

Good episode in general with just 1 big qualm. Knowing how the stories progress, I feel like I’ll be kind of bored with PhuNoh. Stop making them love each other one episode then hate or become jealous of each other the next. It’s getting boring. Let them have a period to just be boys that are friends but feel more than platonic love. We aren’t children where if something dramatic isn’t happening, you’ll lose are attention. It’s called atmosphere and growing of the scene and relationship. This isn’t a novella.
So I have to talk about the girls in this series. Sigh. This is becoming Mean Girls, Lovesick edition. Grace is Regina George, evil incarnate. Seriously, I’m pretty sure she’s a psychopath. Lhew is Gretchen Weiners, the lackey that follows Regina around. Nan is Karen Smith, the somewhat slow/oblivious of the group about the drama but people really like her. Lastly Jeed, Cady Heron, the girl that becomes like the mean girls to try to fit in. They even put in the bad female teacher trying to give bad advice and making bad choices (giving everyone the title of class representative besides the one that is most likely willing to kill for the position). All in all it was just good. Not a super interesting or great episode but it was good.
