Apparently, finishing what he started meant that Chanyeol had to babysit Baekhyun’s mother until she’d gotten completely faced at the bar and almost passed out.

Somewhere in between then and first meeting her in the office, he’d become her and was immediately told he could expect help from no one. Even after Junmyeon’s insistence his younger cousin was firm and the two were promptly pushed out the door with a stern warning from Baekhyun, a permanent grimace etched on his mouth.

“I’m busy. So don’t come back here. Watch her.”

The doors slammed in their faces and both of them began to pout, the mother at her unfriendly child and the tall man at being treated like one. The former grabbed onto Chanyeol’s arm and clung onto his hand.

“I want a drink,” she whined. And if it weren’t inappropriate at the moment, Chanyeol could have laughed.

He found out very quickly just how similar mother and son were, and he couldn’t help but think that if Baekhyun were an older female he wouldn’t have been exactly the same. He wondered briefly what part of Baekhyun came from his father…but remembering his occupation he decided he’d rather not find out.

She spent most of the night groping his arms and snaking her hands down to his backside. He could only plead at Kyungsoo from the other side of the bar. But the latter had nothing to offer besides a steady stream of alcohol.

Besides her continually wandering hands, Chanyeol did steadily begin to enjoy her company. She asked him a lot about himself and had never ending tales from her time as a hostess. Apparently now she owned a bunch of bars under the Byun name. This information both surprised and didn’t surprise Chanyeol. As a mother and a woman it seemed unreal that she was caught up in all the dirty business of her family. But then again…she was the mother of the family. It only made sense that she had the balls to hang out with the rest. And from the way she spoke, it seemed she had more than most.

“I taught him everything, you know,” she slurred, nursing a glass of bourbon in her left hand.

“You mean Boss?”

“Boss? Oh…Baekkie. He likes to pretend that his father is his main influence. He just can’t stand it that we’re so similar!”

AH, he thought. So she does see herself in him.

“I mean where do you think he learned all his dance moves?”

Chanyeol actually spit up some of his drink, and he had to hurry and steal a napkin from behind the counter before it dribbled down his chin.

“What!?” he laughed.

“Yeah!” her drink waved dangerously as she expressed herself with her hands. “I taught him how to dance, but then he got older and all he wanted to do was be like his father. But he wasn’t around so I taught him how to fight! And how to hold a gun! But then he just stopped being cute all of a sudden. I mean he still looks cute of course, but I miss the times when he’d wet the bed and come crawl in with me, you know?”

Chanyeol burst into laughter at the thought. He howled and tears even came to his eyes. Tao who was standing at a distance only raised an eyebrow in question at him. He noticed the cat-like man send a short text on his phone.

Baekhyun’s mom lay a hand over his and smiled. “You should have seen him! He was such a precious little crybaby! Oh! Actually I have a picture!”

Chanyeol leaned in as she whipped out her phone. On the screen was a picture of an old Polaroid, dating back to around the time Chanyeol himself was only 2 or 3. And even though he was much, much younger, the photo was clearly a toddler Baekhyun crying his eyes out sitting on a red tricycle. His black shiny hair and cute small eyes were still recognizable. Chanyeol could barely contain his giggles as his mother continued to gush and laugh about what a crybaby her own son used to be.

“Oh and you should have seen it! Whenever there was a thunderstorm, he would-“

She was cut off abruptly when the phone was snatched out of her hands. The perpetrator was none other than Baekhyun himself, who stared down at the picture on the screen with a scowl before quickly deleting it.

“Hey-“ Chanyeol began to protest but Baekhyun’s mother quieted him with a finger to his lips. He looked to Tao who shrugged sheepishly. “Tattle-tale,” he muttered.

Baekhyun seethed with gritted teeth. “I think that’s enough fun for you two. Especially you, Mother.”

She pouted outwardly, but leaned over and whispered into Chanyeol’s ear. “It’s okay, he doesn’t know I have more pictures at home. I’ll show you more some other time.” Chanyeol could barely hide his laugh even when Baekhyun frowned intensely at the exchange.

When she made to stand she swayed dangerously and almost fell. Luckily, she landed on Chanyeol who immediately straightened her out. And with Tao’s help, they were able to her outside the club (at Baekhyun’s order) to a waiting car. Before she ducked in, she gave him a large and sloppy smooch on his cheek. He immediately cupped his now flushing face.

“See you tomorrow, Chanbaby!” she called with a little wink, so alike to her child that Chanyeol almost gasped.

When the door was shut and the car was away, Baekhyun groaned and threw his head back exasperatedly. “She’s staying?”

Chanyeol couldn’t help but ask lightly, “Is it really a bad thing?”

Baekhyun only looked up at him incredulously. “Do you always get along with your mother?”

“No, but-“

“Then shut your trap.”

Baekhyun stood sulking for a moment, arms crossed over his chest and his lips stuck out in a pout.

Chanyeol hummed a bit absentmindedly before he spoke again. “Not getting along isn’t always a bad thing I suppose. Even if you fight it’s just nice to actually have someone to not get along with, you know? Just having family is nice.”

“You make it seem like I was an orphan or something,” he hissed.

“The way you spoke before…I thought-“

“You thought I was all alone?” he raised an eyebrow.

“Well, yeah, actually…but your mom…she’s really a great lady isn’t she?”

“Ew. Don’t talk about my mother that way, thank you.” He grimaced but Chanyeol couldn’t help but smile at him. Baekhyun frowned again, “Well since you like her so much, you can entertain her while she’s in town.”

“I’d be glad to.” And he really would. Maybe, with a little more time, he’d learn a thing or two about dealing with his boss…or maybe he’d at least find some sort of blackmail material….

The man in question stared at him, the corner of his mouth twitching ever so slightly upwards. “Park…You’re a weird one. You know that right?”

Chanyeol grinned. “Yes, Boss.”

Do Kyungsoo watched from the corners of his eyes as Park Chanyeol shared intimate conversations with Byun Baekhyun’s mother. The latter explicitly and openly was feeling up the boy but besides deterring her it seemed there was nothing he could do to stop it. Chanyeol didn’t seem to mind after a while though. In his eyes it even seemed like they were becoming close.

He wondered if Park Chanyeol ever had any idea who he was dealing with.

He didn’t know much about Lee Chaerin aside from a little more than what the general public knew. Since she lived abroad now and didn’t often return, her file hadn’t been pertinent to his case. But what he did know was that she was dangerous.

Kyungsoo wondered if Chanyeol would let her arms roam so easily around his neck if he knew that she could snap it with a simple twist.

Not much was known about her current years, since she spent so much time away from the main family. But Kyungsoo did know that the past Chaerin was a hellion. She had to be. How else could she have married into the Byun’s? In fact, it was estimated by people more expert than he that Baekhyun’s father’s era could never have been so powerful if it weren’t for her influence.

But these questions were really unimportant to Kyungsoo at the moment.

What was important was the fact that Chanyeol had discovered his gun. He cursed. He’d told the brass it was a stupid idea but they had insisted he keep it with him. Just in case. Well now, just in case could have potentially blown his cover.

Maybe even more unsettling was the way Chanyeol had looked at him when the two had first sat down. His eyes looked like he’d pleaded for Kyungsoo to do something when Chaerin was running her hands all over him. It was like he’d already completely forgotten what he’d seen earlier.

Maybe the boy was a little…stupid. And that worried him.

---

The truth is…with all the fuss earlier with Baekhyun’s mother. Chanyeol had forgotten about Seunghoon, or rather Kyungsoo.

So it was again a surprise to him when he exited the club and began walking towards the station that Kyungsoo jumped out of the shadows and grabbed ahold of him.

Chanyeol shrieked, but since the club was in the warehouse district and it was the early morning, no one was around to hear.

“We need to talk,” said Kyungsoo lowly. He seemed to be recovering his breath after panting rather frantically, and seeing his expression Chanyeol nodded fervently in agreement.

They walked silently to the bus station to catch a taxi since it was much too early for public transportation. The short ride was quiet and stifling and Chanyeol’s palms rolled with nervous sweat. When they stepped out in front of his shabby apartment building Kyungsoo followed him up the stairs and inside.

Chanyeol fumbled with his keys but finally they were in, and the strangely intimidating shorter man stood expectantly in his front door. Chanyeol couldn’t wrap his mind around the situation, but instead wearily eyed the small duffel the other carried, now entirely sure of its contents.

After kicking off his shoes, the other strode in confidently and sat himself down on the small couch in the over-crowded living room, while Chanyeol tentatively sat across from him, dragging in a chair from the kitchen.

“Um,” he began unsure, eyes darting over Kyungsoo’s face. “You have something on your lip,” he indicated where on his own mouth. “…is that blood?”

Kyungsoo dragged a thumb across the dry blood on his bottom lip. “It’s fine. It’s not mine anyway.”

“Then whose-“ Chanyeol shook his head. “Never mind. What do you want from me, Seunghoon?”

Kyungsoo reached into his bag and pulled out his gun, causing Chanyeol to leap from his chair in fright. But Kyungsoo set it gently on the small table between them.

“My name isn’t Lee Seunghoon,” he began suddenly. “But my real name is not important, and it’s better if you don’t know anyway. What you do need to know is that I am a detective under Seoul Metro PD. For obvious reasons, I can’t show you my badge right now but I can assure you that I am legit.” He pointed to the weapon lying cold and stark on the table. “That there is a Beretta 92 9mm Pistol. It’s a standard regulation firearm for all uniforms and detectives.”

Chanyeol gaped open mouth. “You-“

Kyungsoo cut him off. “I’m here to investigate the fraudulent and frankly hundreds of other criminal activities the Byun syndicate has been involved with over the years.”

“So what do you want from me!? Are you going to arrest me?”

“No, Park Chanyeol, I’m not going to arrest you.”

“You…aren’t?”

“That is…if you cooperate with me fully I’m not.”

Chanyeol groaned and shut his eyes. It was just his luck. It was just like him to get mixed up in something more complicated when he was already in deep.

“It’s really nothing terrible,” the other elaborated. “Just tell me some simple information here and there. And when we finally bring them down, you get immunity.”

Chanyeol’s head whipped up. “Just like that?”

“Well…it will take some persuasion towards the judge on my part…I mean, he’ll ask me about how cooperative and amiable you’ve been.”

He furrowed his eyebrows. “So what you’re saying is…if I don’t give you what you want I’m going down with the rest of them?”

“Yup,” his lips popped and he smiled.

Chanyeol stood again and shouted, “But I haven’t even done anything!”

Kyungsoo scoffed. “You work for the Byun’s. Define anything.”

“Fine! Fine!” He paced the room frantically and Kyungsoo’s eyes followed him expectantly.

So Chanyeol dove into his short story. He talked about how after a few years of working at his job, his gambling habit turned into more of an addiction than a simple pastime, and how before he knew it he’d borrowed from an unlicensed bookie he’d heard about from his friend. When Kyungsoo began to speak up Chanyeol fully admitted that he was wrong then, and for that he had no qualms about earning jail time.

But when he got to the part where he owed money and how Baekhyun had come and attacked him, Kyungsoo had to jump in.

“Woah, woah,” he said holding up a hand, and Chanyeol stopped his frantic pacing. “Byun Baekhyun
