Bad News & Whispered Secrets
The BossA/N: This is part 2 of an update (09/05/17) so if you haven’t read the previous chapter please go back and do so before continuing. ^^
Every flash of lightning and subsequent roll of thunder sent a small shiver down his spine. The shadows that flashed off the dingy brown walls screamed horror. Despite that, his companion snored softly on the couch, an arm draped over his exposed belly and one of his long legs drooping off the armrest as he remained undisturbed. Kyungsoo supposed that in this moment he should be rather thankful that Jongin had barged his way into the safehouse with him. He was already on edge before the storm hit, and the ruckus outside wasn’t doing his nerves any favors.
They’d arrived in New York just hours after the Byuns were scheduled to arrive, Kyungsoo unwilling to risk traveling the same flight despite Jongin’s protests that the others would never think to walk beyond First Class. He himself had seemed pretty peeved when Kyungsoo had told him he wouldn’t bother switching to First Class just to sit with Jongin, so the younger snuck behind his back and paid for his upgrade. It was annoying – not that Kyungsoo was really complaining about free First Class accommodations, but rather the pushy manner in which Jongin went about it. Kyungsoo would excuse him this once. After all, he was just a kid.
He was a kid, there was no doubt about that. But he wasn’t stupid, Kyungsoo realized.
On the long flight over, Kyungsoo had kept a very sleepy Jongin awake and answering any questions he had. But with Jongin, it became increasingly more difficult to discern whether he was telling the truth, a half-truth, or a lie.
He seemed honest enough about certain things, his own role in the organization, the man named Jongdae -The Puppeteer, Baekhyun’s secret cousin. But Kyungsoo knew that Jongin knew that his word alone was not enough to indict any of them. Kyungsoo could tell that the other was withholding all of the pertinent information, the really damning evidence. But he wasn’t about to force him to come clean. There would be no point in trying to get this boy to really turn on his family, not for a man he just met.
There was a soft knock at the door and Kyungsoo answered it in a hurry, lest the noise wake up the sleeping boy. It turned out he needn’t have bothered – Jongin slept like a log.
He kept the chain across the door when he opened it, a hand discretely latched on to the holster at his hip, but when he saw it was just Harris he sighed in relief. He closed the door to unleash the chain and opened it to let Harris step inside.
Agent John Harris was a much older man than Kyungsoo. He was a bit rough-and-tumble but deep down he had a heart bigger than anyone, which is why he’d gone out of his way to trek across the city in this downpour. He’d also opened up the FBI safehouse to both Kyungsoo and Jongin - though he didn’t know the latter until Kyungsoo introduced him as his informant, to which Harris had paled at his relation to the Byuns.
As if that weren’t enough, Kyungsoo had begged him for any information he could dig up on the Byun’s movements. He’d left them hours ago, Jongin had fallen asleep, and Kyungsoo had waited.
“It’s a bit of a wet one,” he said, watching Harris shake his coat dry in the entryway. He spoke quietly.
“No kidding,” Harris returned, an eyebrow raised. “The other one asleep?”
Kyungsoo nodded. “I’m sure he’ll be up soon to eat though. So before he does…” he trailed off anxiously.
“I got it,” he replied, waving him off. “I’ll make this quick.” His soft expression turned int
