Lost Voice

Silent Love

A sudden jerk of the car shook Mirae awake from her peaceful slumber, alerting her of her surroundings immediately. She saw a flash of light, before she felt the entire vehicle tumbling down. She groaned as pain suddenly filled her senses, in every part of her body, pain seemed to exist.

“Rae-yah, Rae-yah,” a frantic voice was calling out to her.

Mirae could barely keep her eyes open. She felt something trickling down her skin, but she didn’t know what it was. Screams of terror filled her ears, confusing her immensely. Who was shouting? Why were they shouting? She vaguely felt someone touching her and she struggled to open her eyes to identify that person. She saw Seunghwan, their driver and her oppa with a 16 year , crying.

“Yah, Mirae-yah, don’t close your eyes. Please don’t. Focus on oppa, okay? Don’t close your eyes,” he said shakily.

Mirae glanced up at him. She wanted to reassure him that she would stay awake, but she didn’t think that she could do it. Her eyes felt so heavy and she just wanted to close them. She felt so tired; she couldn’t even find an ounce of energy to speak to him. She felt like her body was being pricked and stabbed in numerous places. It was like she was missing parts of her body and she was feeling fearful that it was true.

“Oppa is here, so don’t you dare close your eyes,” he continued to say.

No matter how much Mirae tried to follow his orders, she felt her eyes dropping. Before she knew it, everything turned black.

“Mirae!” Yunho shouted as he burst through the doors of the hospital. His head whipped around frantically, trying to locate his sister. “Seunghwan hyung!”

“Are you Jung Yunho-ssi?” a nearby nurse asked.

Yunho turned to him, nodding anxiously. Worry was etched in his face and panic coated his entire body.

“Follow me,” the nurse said.

Yunho nodded numbly, following behind the nurse wordlessly. He could feel his heart in his throat, threatening to spill out from the overflowing amount of terror that he felt.

“Jung Mirae and Kwon Seunghwan were rushed here half an hour ago. Your sister was already unconscious by that time and she is currently in the ICU. Kwon Seunghwan-ssi was barely conscious and he’s also being operated on at the moment,” the nurse reported as they walked down the hall.

“Are my parents here?” Yunho asked. It was his mother who called him, informing him of the news, so they should be here.

“They arrived a few minutes after your sister was rushed here. They’ve been waiting in front of the ICU ever since,” the nurse responded. “Here we are.”

Yunho’s eyes darted around the room and he easily spotted his crying mother and the stiff form of his father. He quickly rushed over to them.

“Have you heard of anything else yet?” Yunho asked quickly. He could hear the thumping of his heart, echoing in his ear and reminding him of the panic that he was feeling.

“Yunho,” his father breathed. “They haven’t told us anything yet. They’re still checking Mirae’s condition. As for Seunghwan, they said he should be fine; the doctors have assured us that he isn’t in the brink of death.”

“Is… Is Mirae okay?” Yunho asked nervously.

His father sighed out of worry, shaking his head. “I’m not sure. They mentioned that her injuries were more severe. They told me that they would check her condition and tell us the options that they can take before they take any action.”

Yunho nodded numbly, sitting down next to his father. He felt an encouraging pat on his shoulder, but he waved his father off, knowing that his mother needed the comfort more. A doctor came towards them a few moments later, a grim frown settled upon his weary face.

“How is she?” his father questioned.

“Your daughter has suffered a lot of injuries. Her left lung is punctured, but it didn’t affect her heart. Her right kidney and liver also suffered some damage. We found some glass shards in various parts of her body, but it isn’t too serious. However, I do regret to inform you that was also damaged. There was a small cut in it and glass shards were also found along the throat,” the doctor said.

“What? No! You have to save her voice,” Yunho argued.

“We will try everything we can, but even if we could, we would have to do the surgery through her neck. It could make her lose her voice, but it’s the only way,” the doctor regretfully informed.

“You have to find another way!” his mother cried. “Please… Her voice is the most important thing to her. You have to save it.”

“I’m really sorry, but even if we find another way to do the operation, we would still have to check the inside of for further damage. If we don’t, she could end up in a worse condition, not just losing her voice,” the doctor answered.

The three members of the Jung family looked at each other and nodded sadly. It was the only way.

“Shall we proceed with the operation, then?” the doctor asked.

“If it’s the only way,” his father sighed.

“We could try to find out more ways, but there isn’t much time left. She needs to be operated on as soon as possible.”

“Just please save her!” his mother pleaded.

“I will do my best,” the doctor assured. He gave them a slight bow. “I have to go.”

The family of three nodded, and the doctor set off. Yunho watched as his parents embraced each other, comforting each other from the dire news. He slumped down on his seat, running a hand over his tired face. ‘Just please, even if it’s just this once, can you grant this? Even if she loses her voice, please don’t take away her hearing too. Music is everything to her. You can’t take it all away.’

Six days later, Yunho found himself again in the ICU unit, staring at Mirae’s unconscious form. He made it a habit to visit her since the surgery ended four days ago, for the allotted period of time.

“Mirae-yah, oppa is waiting for you. Wake up soon,” Yunho murmured.

He had been informed, along with his parents, that the operation was successful, but Mirae had slipped into a coma. The doctors were unsure of how long Mirae would be in the coma, so the family could do nothing but wait and pray. They visited her every day after the surgery, making sure to drop by the hospital whenever their schedules would allow. They usually left sadly, still with the same results as before. They would then proceed to visit Seunghwan, making sure that he didn’t do anything reckless just because he was blaming himself for what happened.

He continued to stare at his younger sister, hoping to get a reaction before he was called by his parents. To his shock, the younger Jung’s eyes slowly opened, letting the world see her brown eyes again after six days of hiding it.

“She’s awake,” Yunho breathed out, unable to believe it.

The nurse immediately called for the doctor and Yunho reluctantly went out as they checked on Mirae’s condition. A smile broke on his face as he met his parents, eagerly announcing the news.

A few hours later, they sat down around Mirae's bed. She was smiling at them as she lied down, as she was ordered by the doctors to not move too much to aggravate her injuries.

“You’re finally awake, sweetie,” her mom whispered, her daughter’s hand softly.

Mirae only smiled in response. Pain flashed in her family’s eyes for a moment, reminded of the fact that they would not be able to hear her voice again.

“She lost her voice due to the damage inflicted upon during the accident. I’m sorry but we couldn’t save it. She lost her voice.”

That was what the doctor had told them after the surgery, and that was what Mirae heard an hour after she woke up. But she continued to smile, for her family. She conveyed a message through her smile, reassuring them even if she was the one who was injured. “It’s okay.” She mouthed the words, just in case they couldn’t catch it from her smile, calming them as best as she could.

Despite the loss, Yunho felt glad. His prayers were heard and that was all that mattered. She was alive, and her dream was not fully dead, it never will be. As long as her hearing remained, then it will continue. He’ll make sure of it. He grabbed her hand, looking directly at her determinedly. “We’ll go through this together, I promise.”

Chapter 13: Cliffhanger?! Are you freaking serious? Is she going to have her daily checkup or something? Oh, and you don't have to emphasize Junsu's "angelic" voice for like a page of this chapter. I mean, if you love his voice so much, why don't you stop denying that you have fallen in love with him in every single way possible? Eyy, it's okay. Nothing is stopping you, anyway. I get it that he is your bias. It shows in your writing style. Plus, you are the author.

I can't help but imagine you portraying the character of Mirae. I guess you got your inspiration back when you spent more time in listening to DBSK and getting to know Junsu. That's nice. You should probably do that more often since it is for the betterment of your writing capability.
