It's Raining Gifts

Black and Gold

Lais was on her way to the Avon store where she worked as a sales representative. When Lais tried to unlock the door, the key was jammed. "You've got to be kidding me," she griped. She tried again and again to unlock the door, but all attempts were failed. After she finally got the key out of the lock, she breathed the 7 a.m. morning air with her back against the door and gave up.

"Having trouble?" a male voice asked. Lais looked up to see an impossibly handsome Chinese man with blonde hair smiling down at her. He was very tall, too.

Snapping herself out of her trance, Lais told him, "When I tried to unlock the door, the key got jammed."

"Let me see if I can do it. Lais gave the handsome man the keys and watched him struggle the same way she had. "Damn, this thing is tough."

"I know, right?"

Maybe you should tell the manager of the buildings about this."

"I tried to, but it seems as if my calls aren't going through."

"You mean, this happened more than once?"

"Yes, but it seems like the manager is too high and mighty to take calls from an Avon lady."

"Well, I'm sorry you feel that way, but I have more than just 1 building that I'm getting complaints about conditions from."

"And why would you be getting complaints in the first place?"

"I'm the high and mighty building manager." The Chinese man kicked the door and jiggled the key until the door was finally unlocked.

Lais face palmed and muttered, "Why can't I shut up sometimes? Look, I'm so sorry about what I said, um..."
"Kris Wu. Don't worry about it. When you're building, you get used to people complaining about your lack of progress."

"Well, thank you, Mr. Wu."

"No problem, uh..."

"Lais. Lais Ribeiro."

"Well, Lais, I'll see to it that you get a number lock like everyone else."

"Thank you so much."

"See you around." Mr. Wu left for another building while Lais watched his tall from walk down the dirt road.

"What are you doing?" a woman asked, surprising Lais.

"Oh, good morning, Kate. The lock got jammed again, but the building manager came by and fixed it."

"He fixed the lock. About time."

"Well, he didn't exactly fix the lock. He helped me unlock the store, and he said we're getting a number lock like everyone else."

"Good. It seems like we're the last to have anything improved just because people believe it's a 'woman's job.' What's up with that?"

"Well, I'm sure the building manager is going to make sure that won't happen again."

"I hope not."

Lais and Kate went inside the shop to continue griping while setting it up and shelving the new items.

"Anyways, how was your blind date?" Lais asked suddenly.

"Oh, it was incredible," Kate exhaled dreamily. "The guy's name is Daniel, and he was so good-looking. He wasn't a jerk like the rest of those blind dates Amy set me up on. Yes, he said he didn't expect me to be a black woman, but he was more happy about it instead of being all bigoted about it. I don't get why so many men seem to dislike us so much. I mean, what's wrong with us black women?"

"Nothing. Maybe they're intimidated by women with independence."

"That may be so."

"What was he this time?"

"He was Korean and Irish. He works as a technician engineer for Google."

"Google??!! Then that means he's got a lot of money. You'd better hold on to him, Kate."

"You don't have to tell me twice. I said I would finally land a decent guy, and so far I believe that I've met that goal. Him having money is just a bonus."

Sales were going really well for the two women, who put in a lot of sweat and energy in helping out the customers. As more people came in, the more exhausted they seem to have gotten, and 5 Hour Energy didn't seem to be doing much for them.

"I am so tired," Lais sighed.

"I am, too, Lais, but we still have 2 more hours to go. I'm gonna go out to the concession stand and get some funnel cakes. You want some?"

"Yes, please. I need some badly."

Kate left her co-worker to get the confections.

Lais drank her third 5 Hour Energy of the day. Suddenly, the door's bell tinkled when it opened. "Kate?"

Footsteps became louder as the approached the desk of the lone representative.

"Mr. Wu? What are you doing here?"

The tall and handsome building manager smiled at Lais. "I'm just coming here to get something for a special lady."

"Oh, well, I can give you plenty of ideas on what to give her." Lais would have never guessed he a girlfriend, but a man as gorgeous as him would be taken by someone else. She joined Mr. Wu on the other side of the desk. "These 4-piece perfume sets are $10.99 each. They include a cologne spray, a perfumed skin softener, ad 2 shimmering body powders. Personally, I like Odyssey and Night Magic the best."

"You do, huh?"

"Yep. Over here, this 3-piece gift set cost $25. It's called Flor Alegria. It sells like hotcakes all the time. So does Kyoto Flower. This is the newest one in the Haiku series."

"What about the jewelry over there?'

The introductory price to the Sparkling Statement Coiled Ring is $9.99, so get it while it's still low. If I had that ring, I'd pair it up with the Liquid Glamour Gift Set, which is also $9.99. You can get 2 of these Pavé Birthstone-color Pendant Necklaces for $12. Mine is the Pink Tourmaline. If you want one necklace, it's $&.99."

"All right." Mr. Wu selected his choice items in the basket he carried and paid for them at the check out desk. Then, he left the bag there.

"Wait, Mr. Wu."

Mr. Wu turned around and smiled once more at Lais.

"You forgot your stuff."

"No, I didn't. I left it at your desk on purpose. That's for you."

Lais' mouth hung open and touched the bag. "All of this is for me?"

"Yep, and call me Kris. Good night, Lais."

"Good night, Kris." Lais watched Kris leave as she held the bag of gifts he bought for her. "I can't believe it." Lais giggled and smiled while she fished through the bag.

Kate returned in the shop with four funnel cakes to see her co-worker staring at the bag. "Lais, why are you blushing so much. I don't think I've ever seen you blush this much. What happened?"

Lais continued to giggle like a schoolgirl and pulled out the gifts Kris bought her. She was very much touched and surprised Kris went all out for her like this even though they've only just met.

"Who bought all this stuff for you?"

"Kris."

"Kris? The building manager?"

"The Chinese dude with blond hair?"

"Yeah."

"Wow." Kate almost as shocked as Lais when she gave her 2 of the funnel cakes. "You must have it bad for him. I can't blame you, though. I mean, who could?"

"I guess," Lais beamed. "This is the most generous thing anyone has ever done for me. He's so sweet. I still can't believe this."

"Me neither. You're a lucky girl."

"You have Daniel, Kate. Remember?"

"I know that. I'm just saying that it's shocking for me, too."
