Chapter 8

Mission to Kill

(a/n: Extra long chapter because I love you (: )

-Krystal's Pov-

I sat up after waking up from my large nap. After realizing it was already night, I swung my legs over the bed and walked to the bathroom, squinting at the blinding light. I looked at myself in the mirror; I looked like a disaster.

My hair was a tangled mess. My face was pale and there were black circles under my eyes. My new black t-shirt was rumpled. I had gotten it from as prize at the festival. It had bright green letters that said "Lettuce Celebrate!" and a head of lettuce with a smiley face on the center. Amber had won it from a lettuce eating competition because I though it was cute.

I washed my face, trying to make myself feel better. I knew the reason behind my restlessness.

Amber.

The girl downstairs was no doubt Yiyun Liu and tomorrow, her life would be in danger from the Elites and possible soldiers heading their way here.

Tomorrow my long lost friend would die. Whether by my hands, or her own friends.

How could I do this?

I turned off the tap and switched off the light before I returned to my bedroom. Sitting on my bed examining my room with curious eyes was the exact person who had been invading my mind the whole day.

"A-Amber? What...what are you doing...in my room?" I stuttered.

She turned her head towards me an raised an eyebrow.

"You're not going to ask how I actually got in here?" She asked. I stared at her for a while, wondering what she was doing here. Realizing I wasn't going to answer, she answered her own question.

"The door was unlocked. I thought about knocking but I heard the tap running, so I thought you were awake." She said. She frowned, looking at me. "How mindless are you?"

"Excuse me?" I asked, snapping out of my daze.

"Yuri told me you wanted to talk to me." She said feeling my cold glare and changing the subject.

Should I tell her?

"It's...stupid." I muttered as I lessened my glare and looked at my fumbling hands. She stood up and grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at her.

"Is it because of me? How I used to be a spy?" She asked. I stayed silent and looked at her lips. Away from her eyes.

"What? Do you think I'm going to kill you, now that you know that?" She joked.

'No.' I thought. 'I'm afraid of me. I'm afraid of the agency. Of what they'll do to me if I don't end your life.'

But I didn't say that.

"I'm scared Amber." I whimpered, my voice breaking. I mentally punished myself. I had never portrayed a weak image of myself to others. But I couldn't help it as Amber pulled me closer into a hug. I couldn't help it as I drove my face farther into her chest.

We stayed like that for a moment but then she suddenly pulled away.

"Come to the roof with me. I have something to tell you." She whispered.

"Is it a bad thing?" I asked, feeling a little bad since she pulled away first. She laughed.

"Depending on your point of view. What matters most is that I'll be happy with whatever your reaction will be."

"Dork." I muttered, forcing down a smile. She chuckled a bit and held my hand, which I immediately began to blush, and pulled me out of my apartment and to the roof.

"What is it?" I asked her as she let my hand go. She walked towards the edge of the roof and inhaled the fresh air.

"How long have you been home?" I asked, trying to get a conversation going. Amber turned around and motioned me to come towards her.

"About five minutes ago. Yuri nearly gave me a heart attack as soon as I walked in my apartment." She said. I asked what Yuri unni did and saw as Amber became uncomfortable, shifting her weight from side to side.

"The light was off and so I wasn't expecting anyone to be in the room. I was wrong and so she startled me. What made me nearly have a heart attack was that her foot was on the table. I immediately saw that she broke it." Amber explained.

"Oh my..." I muttered.

"It wouldn't seem like a big deal to you but you must know that Yuri is psychic. I've figured out over the years that when something incredibly good is about to happen, she's cheery and annoying all day. However, when something bad is about to happen, she usually becomes clumsy and gets herself hurt. I've seen minor things like a broken nail or a bruise..."

"Ahh..." I mumbled as I understood. Something extremely bad was about to happen. My eyes widened as I realized something.

Can the bad thing be the Elites coming?

I glanced at Amber and I saw that she was looking at me. Our eyes met and there was a silence between us. I could only hear cars an a few people in the silence.

"I told you a lot about me but I realized I barely know about you." She said finally. She laughed suddenly and my heart fluttered. She began to stare straight ahead at the lights, both from buildings and the stars.

"I'm not usually like this. I'm usually quiet and try to act cold. Well, except when I'm at a party." She said. She sighed and looked back at me.

"Tell me about yourself."

"Well, I..." I started. I had stopped looking at Amber when she looked at the lights but I could feel her eyes on me which was making me nervous.

"I-I..." I stuttered. I couldn't remember my story. Something about me studying here...

"You're a spy too." Amber said. I heard a gasp and realized that it was me. I laughed nervously.

"W-What?...I could never..." I started.

"Don't lie to me. Your lips tremble when you lie to me." Amber interrupted.

"You're a spy." She continued. "The best of the best from the SM Elites...or am I wrong?" I turned around and faced her. Her eyes were searching and I couldn't help but feel guilty.

"Jung Soojung. It's been a long time since I last saw you. Eleven years, I believe." She said.

"Yiyun-sshi..."

"How's your dad? Is he still the chief? Does he still like his coffee bitter?"

I could only nod. She smiled.

"I'm glad that you're his daughter. He wouldn't have held you up to such high standards if you weren't his child. You also wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for his strict rules."

"But because of his standards, I've been sent here to kill you." I suddenly blurted out.

"Why are you happy? Because you think I can't complete my mission?" I hadn't realized that I had been crying. I angrily wiped the tears away.

"I'll ask again." She said, keeping strong eye contact with me. "How mindless are you? Do you really not know why I'm happy you're here?"

I shook my head.

"I wanted you to visit me. I wanted to see you again. Do you know the number one spy rule?"

I knew it but my mouth wouldn't move. Her eyes were staring fiercely at mine now. I couldn't respond.

"Well, since you seem to have forgotten, the number one spy rule is to never trust anyone. Because of you, I broke that rule, Soojung." She said. She took a step forward and, since I was scared, I took a step back.

She looked at my feet then back to my eyes.

"Rule number four hundred twenty-three: never walk backwards without knowing your surroundings." She said taking another step, making me take another step backwards. I felt my foot hit something and stumbled.

"As it might lead to you to a disadvantage." Amber continued as I quickly steadied myself. She began to walk towards me at a normal pace, and I continued to walk back just as fast.

"Rule number fifty-seven: when facing an enemy, don't walk backwards as you may be cornered by them." She said. As soon as she finished her sentence, I felt my something sturdy on my back. I immediately knew it was one of the huge venting tubes coming out of the apartment.

Just as she said, I was cornered.

She walked closer until she was not up to a foot from my face.

"Rule number two: always expect the unexpected." She whispered.

"I love you, Jung."

I gasped as she leaned forward and crushed our lips together.

She kissed me softly at first, then proceeded to get more aggressive. I found myself kissing her back just as hungrily. My hands up from her hands to her arms then to her shoulders, finally stopping at her neck where I wrapped it tightly, pulling her closesly.

I felt her hands on my cheeks, I felt her fingers slowly them.

I felt at bliss.

My heart was hammering violently, threatening to escape. And from our closeness, I could feel Amber's going just as fast.

I slowly traced my tongue on her lip, asking for entrance and explored as she opened her lips.

Suddenly she pulled away. She looked at my eyes searchingly. I then remembered about her upcoming death. She looked off towards the edge of the roof.

"I...I have to tell you something..." I whispered. She glanced at me and put her index finger up to her lips then walked towards the edge of the roof.

I followed her there and gasped as I saw a jet black car with tinted windows pull up in front of the apartment. Amber and I watched as my sister walked out first followed by heavily built men. I bit my lip a I saw another car exactly like it already parked in front of the apartment.

Suddenly, Amber looked at me, betrayal and shock in her eyes. After what seemed like forever, she finally spoke.

"I...I thought I could trust you...all those years together..." She choked. "Did they ever mean anything to you?"

I felt tears welling up in my eyes.

"I...I wanted to tell y-" I began but she cut me off.

"Save it. Bye Jung." She said coldly. She ran towards the rooftop door and, after violently swinging open, rushed down the stairs, forgetting to close the door.

-Amber's Pov-

My heart felt like it would shatter. I thought I meant something to her. She did kiss me back after all.

I could still smell her scent, feel the warmth of her body, taste her lips...

I shook my head and pushed my feelings far into my mind and focused on what I was doing.

I skipped the stairs two at a time but as soon as I remembered Yuri in the apartment with a broken foot, I skipped three, then four at a time, going as fast I could.

I immediately stopped as I heard someone else on the stairs. I peaked my head over the railing and pulled it back just as fast. I cursed multiple times in my head as the sight of the blonde not even two flights of stairs away engraved in my head.

I looked around until I found what I was looking for.

Floor number five.

I ran back two flights of stairs and stopped at a certain door. I knocked furiously.

After a few seconds, I saw Pam's face. As soon as she saw my face she led me in quickly.

"What's wrong?" She asked closing the door.

"They're finally here. I need some time. I need to get Yuri." I explained quickly.

"Consider it done. Where are they?" She asked.

"Right outside your door."

At that very moment, there was a voice in the hallway.

"Soojung!"

"Unni!"

"What were you doing up there?"

"I..."

"Is Yiyun up there?"

The was a pause.

"Didn't you see her coming down?"

"No-"

Pam opened the door and motioned me to hide behind the door. I did as was told.

"Hello, is there something wrong? I was about to have my evening tea until I heard some commotion." Pam said.

I smiled. I remembered when I first came here. I had escaped Korea after a couple months by hitching a ride on a ship headed to the US. Pam had found me on the streets and took me to her home.

I had been hesitant at first on opening up with her but after a couple years, I finally told her my story. She had sent me to school and after forcing me to get a job, bought me the apartment I have now. One day I had met Yuri in my college and I we immediately became close because of our past.

After college, she moved in with me and we both grew closer to Pam. She became a motherly figure to us both and in return, after her asking for years, we taught her some Korean.

"No ma'am, there's nothing wrong. We're just looking for someone." There was a ruffling sound, like a paper.

"We're looking for this girl. Have you seen her?"

"Oh yes. She burst into my house and tried to leave through the emergency exit. It's blocked by a stack of antiques. If you rush to my bedroom, you should see her trying to escape." Pam lied. I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing.

Sooyeon thanked Pam and immediately entered the apartment followed by two muscular guards and Krystal.

Pam pointed to the direction of her bedroom and watched them enter it. She followed them and as soon as they all entered it, she closed the door and locked it.

She winked at me and I smiled greatly. Someone started to knock on her bedroom door, wondering why it was locked and she walked away slowly.

"Sorry, that door always seems to lock by itself." She grinned at me. "Also, could I look at that picture again? I think I mistook the girl for my handsome grandson." I hid a laugh and left the apartment, towards Yuri.

Finally, I reach our floor and burst through the door. I quickly understood why it was closed.

They wouldn't want attention.

I frowned as I saw three guys in the room. Yuri had a gun in her hand and from the way she looked at me in my eyes I could tell it was empty.

"Glad I didn't miss the fun." I said. Two of the guys had already faced me and were glaring at me menacingly. I took note of one guy with a familiar looking gun.

"Am!" Yuri exhaled as she shifted her weight to her unbroken foot. Her face was coated in sweat and I couldn't imagine how much pain she could be in.

One of the guys lunged at me and I dodged left, leaving him to fall on the ground. I kneed him on the stomach before he went down.

I suddenly had the urge to shift my head backwards. I did so and barely missed a small shiv.

I looked to the source. It was the gunman. The last guy who had ignored my existence was still staring intently at Yuri. I noticed him moving slowly forward.

I quickly kicked the guy on the floor, hard enough to knock him out but not enough to really damage him.

I then moved randomly towards the gunman, making it hard for him to take aim. I stopped in front of him and spun quickly, giving him a full roundhouse kick to his face. He dropped the gun and fell to the ground, unconscious.

The last guy, realizing he was all alone now, pulled out a knife and leaped to Yuri.

I jumped on him, making sure the knife did not hit me. I fell on top of him and punched him multiple times. Once his nose was bleeding, I yanked out the knife from his hand and put it in my pocket, then took Yuri's gun, and hit it hard against the guys head.

He groaned once and slipped from his consciousness.

I sat up, panting a bit and looked at Yuri smiling. She returned my smile and suddenly passed out. I looked at her hands and realized that they were white.

How hard were you holding that gun, Yul?

I sighed and got up quickly, not wasting a minute. I ran to my room and pulled out my emergency duffel bag. I had been prepared for this day for a long time. I shoved some food and clothing aside and lifted both of the sleeping JackJack and Gonju into it, making sure not to zip it completely. I place the strap on my left shoulder.

I walked over to the unconscious girl and pulled Yuri's left arm over my shoulder and wrapped my right arm around her waist and stood up. I grunted from her weight and began to drag her towards the door. I was surprised when she suddenly became lighter. I looked up to see Yuri's sweaty face concentrated on walking.

We walked out of the door and I groaned when I heard someone coming downstairs.

"Amber!" A familiar voice said.

I turned my head around and looked at the stairs she just climbed down from.

No one else was there.

I frowned and looked at Soojung.

"What, traitor?" I said coldly. My heart hurt as those words escaped my lips but I kept a straight face.

She looked hurt and I couldn't help but begin to doubt myself.

"Please don't be like this...I honestly didn't call them. My sister-"

"Soojung-ah! Where are you?" A voice called out.

Sooyeon.

We both looked up towards her voice. I was the first to look back at Soojung.

"If you really didn't call for them, why don't you stall them? Yuri's heavy." I muttered, hating the fact that I needed help from her. Yuri grumbled, annoyed at my remark.

Soojung smiled and I think I saw a tear escape her left eye.

"Consider it done." She said, quietly. I nodded and looked towards the exit o the apartment.

"Bye Jung." I said, and walked out with a limping Yuri and two sleeping dogs.
