Suchen: For even a night

We Could Be in Love: An Exo Drabble Collection

Summary: Newsies!AU - takes place during the 1899 News Boys strike in New York. Jongdae Kim is the cocky, leader figure of the News Boys Strike who has fallen in love with Junmyeon Kim, an amateur writer who's trying to break into a world of journalism. (Based off of Disney's Newsies the Musical)

Jongdae leaned against the railing of the fire escape, looking up at the night sky with almost no stars in sight. Life in the big city was a challenge- selling newspapers for a living wasn't a very stable job but that's all that was left for him. Over the years, he became the best newsie that roamed the streets of New York but this wasn't the life he wanted. People were dying to get there, but Jongdae? He was trying to get away. He wanted to be free- he wanted to live in a small town where people treated each other like family and where the stars that lit the night sky were as bright as day.

But he couldn't leave, at least not yet. Jongdae just started to rally up all the other news boys for their planned strike against the newspaper publishing companies- it was too late to back out now. The New York World, a famous newspaper, rose the prices for the daily papers up ten cents. The price increase meant that a newsie would have to sell ten more papers than usual in order to make their regular wage. Done with the injustice against his fellow kind, Kim Jongdae saw the perfect opportunity to seize the day and fight for his rights.

This seventeen year old boy with a small background but large presence became the voice of the strike and he couldn't just ditch his fellow newsies for his own happiness. His happiness could wait, but fighting for a news boy's rights couldn't.

"Thought I might find you up here," a soft voice came out of nowhere. The newsie was so deep into thought, he didn't even hear someone climb the fire escape to keep him company. Jongdae turned and smirked at the person who came out of hiding, "Couldn't stay away from me, could ya, Junmyeon?"

A shorter male came into view. He rolled his eyes at Jongdae's comment as he stepped closer to the edge of the railing. Jongdae took this time to take in the sight in front of him- perfectly kept black hair, a neat collared shirt, high-trousers, pale skin, sparkling eyes, and a dazzling smile. In Jongdae's eyes, Junmyeon looked like an angel- Junmyeon had a dainty, high-class appearance and that's exactly what he was.

Junmyeon was the exact opposite of Jongdae- the boy was well-off and didn't have to deal with the worries of finding a place to sleep for a night or coming up with fake headlines in order to make a few extra cents here and there. Compared to Junmyeon, Jongdae was dirt poor. He only had the soiled collared shirt, vest, tattered pants, ripped shoes, and his hat currently on his person and a pair of ruined pajamas, but the two still had something in common- they both fought for the newsies' rights to come into the light.

Although Junmyeon was in an entirely different class than the newsies, who were mostly orphans trying to make their ends meet, he believed in helping them. Even though his father was the owner of the New York World, Junmyeon was an amateur journalist trying to break away from writing about the entertainment world and wanted to focus on the more important issues the world needed to hear about. His story on the newsies strike gave him this much needed opportunity. But not only that, he wanted to fight against the injustice of the world and this story allowed him to do just that.

"What are you thinking about?"

Jongdae sighed and reached for the hat on his head. He gripped it tightly as if it was a stress ball. "Ya think we can really pull this off?"

Junmyeon glanced at his companion, who kept his gaze on the night sky. "The strike? I believe so."

There was a moment of silence as the journalist watched the news boy sort out this thoughts and he never thought Jongdae looked more beautiful.

"Them streets down, they's cruel. They the life out of my old man, well they ain't gonna the life out of me," Jongdae scoffed.

"Oh yeah?" Junmyeon inquired, cocking an eyebrow.

"Yeah. Once this is all over, I'm sayin' bye to the big city life and headin' to a place where it's clean and green and pretty. A big life in a small town."

"So, you're planning on leaving New York?" Junmyeon questioned, looking for clarification.

"Ya got that right, buddy," Jongdae nodded.

"You're planning on leaving me." This time is wasn't a question but a statement. Shocked, Jongdae turned to face the black haired journalist who stared back at him with sad eyes.

"Come with me," the boy said gently, his voice dropping as he stepped closer to the journalist though he knew that his suggestion would be rejected. Junmyeon smiled dejectedly, "You know I can't. I have a life here and my father-"

"Right, of course. Your old pops, Mista Kim," Jongdae chuckled and faced the railing, shaking his head. "If only things were different..."

Another silence fell upon them as they watched the streets of New York from their little fire escape. Junmyeon scooted over until their arms bumped against each other and hung his arms loosely against the steel railing. Jongdae reached for Junmyeon's hand and played with his fingers. They both watched as their fingers intertwined and smiled when a warm feeling took over their bodies.

"Ya know, I never planned on falling for someone like you," Jongdae broke the silence.

"Hm?"

"I thought love at sight was for ers," he started, "at least, it used to be." The strike leader grinned nervously, making the black haired male weak in the knees. Junmyeon could picture the next day's headline: Newsie Strike Leader Brings Journalist to His Knees!

"But you. Just look at ya- you got a life ahead of ya. You's a clever and snarky rich kid with a well-off career and a good head on your shoulders and me? Ha, I'm just a rat off the street."

Junmyeon shook his head. "No, you're more than that," he encouraged Jongdae, squeezing the boy's hand. "You're smart, charismatic, handsome, and sure, you're a bit plain-spoken and cocky but you're a leader. No one else can lead this strike- only you can, Jongdae."

"Ya think so?"

"I know so."

"How do you know?"

"Because I believe in you."

The cold New York breeze made its way to the two up on the fire escape and Junmyeon shivered. Noticing his companion growing colder, Jongdae wrapped his arms around the boy's waist and rested his chin on the journalist's shoulder.

"Jongdae?"

"Hm?" The news boy hummed as he nestled his face into Junmyeon's neck, his lips grazing the soft skin.

"Are you scared?"

"Of what?"

"The strike?"

"No."

"What about my father? Are you scared of him?"

"Even though he's after my head, no."

"Oh?"

"But I'm pretty scared of you," he breathed into Junmyeon's neck.

Junmyeon shifted in Jongdae's arms until they were face to face. "Don't be," Junmyeon whispered back as he leaned in, his hand finding its way to Jongdae's cheek. His thumb tenderly swiped against his skin, rubbing the dirt away from the chisled face that he couldn't help but fall for.

Jongdae stole a glance at Junmyeon's soft pink lips before looking back up at hiseyes that were fluttering to a close. He couldn't help but smile before closing the distance between the two, his own long eyelashes tickling Junmyeon's flushed cheeks. Their lips touched lightly before Junmyeon ever so boldly wrapped his arms around Jongdae's neck to bring his own body flat against the other's chest. Junmyeon's fingertips ghosted against Jongdae's prominent collarbones and he shivered at his lover's touch. Heads tilted, tongues touched, and hands roamed free. Junmyeon's back pressed against the brick wall as fingers carded through messy strands of hair. The breeze carried the sounds of New York City away from that quiet fire escape which overlooked the loud city down below them.

It took more than a few moments for the two to break away and press their foreheads against each other. Jongdae opened his eyes and once again, took in the sight of a flushed and breathless Junmyeon underneath the moonlight. A soft smile graced his lips and his eyes were sparkling with amusement and a little bit of something else- a little something called love.

A/N: Hello, fellow readers! I finally made a comeback into the writing world~!! (And I've also changed my AFF penname!) Hopefully this drabble is up to your standards. I've already posted this as my first entry on my lj account, which is sehunnypot. My twitter is the same name, if you guys wanted to stop by and chat with me for a while too~! Anywho, I've always wanted to write a Newsies!AU featuring Exo but I didn't actually get to it until I went on a Newsies Youtube spree and watched videos of the cast and a bootleg of the musical itself. After my whole Newsies craze died down just a smidge, I finally decided to use Suchen for this AU. I could totally see Jongdae as Jack Kelly, the cocky news boy who has a bit more to him than meets the eye and Junmyeon as Katherine Plumber, a soft-spoken yet independent journalist who wants to grace the world with his writing. But anyways, enough ranting. Hope you enjoyed reading~ and hopefully after reading this, you guys will want to look into this wonderful musical that I'm currently obsessing over; let's be Fansies together!!

Thank you!

Chapter 6: How about you continue this drabble or even turn it into a full length story? I like the storyline! And no, I'm not forcing you to do it. I just think that this will be cool if you write not just as a drabble hehe.

Chapter 5: I love how different you made this AU from the original. Like I can tell it's Frozen inspired, but you really made it your own. And you already know all my feelings because I gushed about them to you beforehand, so I don't know what else to say XD Probably one of the most emotional things I've ever read written by you *sOB*
