The Time for Happily Ever Afters
Only Time Will TellKris and Jihae didn’t actually go public with their relationship until they were 29-30.
The same time they announced their engagement.
His proposal was simple, and unexpected.
He made her a delicious dinner (Kyung Soo and Lay cooked it) but she figured it was because it was the ten year anniversary for the very first day they ever met. She thought it was cute that he was being sentimental about it.
They sat on her couch and watched TV, like any other night they had free, which was more often now that he was able to stabilize his schedule at least somewhat, and she only flew out for major events, and she kept Wimbledon, because she liked it. She was often used as a guest commentator for sporting events and games, but her schedule has stabilized for the most part as well. Even though she was making more money, she kept her small apartment for all these years. Too much happened within those walls to just move out.
“I don’t want to date you anymore.” Kris said suddenly.
Jihae recoiled from him in shock. The hurt was clear in her eyes. She thought they were okay, she was fixed-ish, and she’s reconciled with her parents and they’ve come to an understanding of sorts. Her mother had felt sorry towards her since the divorce, but didn’t have the courage to pick up the phone. She even got to know their new families. Though she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t jealous of how well they were treating their new children.
‘Maybe he liked me better when I was broken before?’ Jihae thought. “W-Why? What happened?”
“I just think we should stop dating.” Kris smiled.
“I see…”
“Are you going to try to stop me?”
“If you don’t want me, I… Well I just want you to be happy…”
“That’s why I say we should stop dating!” He laughed and stood up. She was still seated, very close to falling apart. “Lee Jihae!” He bent down on one knee and held out a small box out on one giant palm. “Will you marry me?”
“You !” She took the small box and started hitting him. “Why the hell would you start a proposal like that?! I thought I was going to throw up!”
“Sorry!” Kris laughed. “But please, answer my question.”
“Yes, you jerk wad! Don’t you ever pull something like that again!” Jihae growled and pulled him in for a kiss. “’I just think we should stop dating’,” Jihae imitated his low voice. “You’re such an sometimes.”
“But you love me.” Kris pecked her on the lips and took the small box back from her and took the ring out.
“I love you.” Jihae nodded and held out her left hand for him.
The wedding was small, friends and family only, mostly his. Surprisingly, he was the bride--err groomzilla and she was just there trying to soothe him. Apparently he’s had this perfect wedding planned out for Jihae and he wanted it just as he’d imagined. Jihae just smiled at everything he chose and picked out the wedding dress, the only thing she was responsible for. She helped him alter things a bit when disasters sprang up, as they always seem to for weddings.
They said their I Dos in front of everyone and the social networks were flooded by their friends’ updates and pictures of the couple’s first kiss as husband and wife.
Their first child was a surprise. They’d thought about kids, but were never sure about it. So when Jihae peed on the stick that told her the news, they were honestly unsure of how to respond. It wasn’t like on TV, where people jumped for joy at the news, nor were they scared like some other TV couples. It was pure uncertainty. They stared at the stick, trying to soak it all in.
“I want to keep it.” Jihae said quietly.
“Me too.” Kris smiled.
Jihae learned to not panic when people left her, the anxiety was almost entirely gone. She was at ease when she watched their two sons and daughter go off to school for the first time. Kris was an entirely different story. She had to hold him as he cried about babies and growing up. It took every bit of will to not just laugh at him. When they sent their oldest son to college, Jihae could have sworn Kris was about to fall to the ground, clutching their son’s leg to keep him from leaving.
The two watched as their children grew into beautiful adults that made them proud, periodically stopping their EXO uncles from being bad influences on their precious angels.
They grew old. Really old.
“Would you still love me if I’m old and wrinkly?” Kris asked, sighing at his reflection in the mirror.
“You already are, and I still love you. I’m going to love you forever, even after you’re walking around with an oxygen tank and I’ll have to help change your bed pan. I love you.” Jihae smiled.
“You’re the older one.” He pouted.
“But you look older.”
“So unfair.” He groaned.
“It’s okay. I love you.” Jihae kissed his cheek and went back to working on her computer.
And they died together. They saw the end coming; they knew it was their time to go. They just wished to go together.
They went out on one last date, struggling to walk, but still walking all the same. They stopped outside her old apartment building. They ate at the restaurant where they met; it changed owners and cuisine, but it was still a restaurant and they ate lunch there one last time. They walked to the amusement park that was long torn down. They went to the cinema and watched a movie that they didn’t pay attention to again. They opted to just stare into each other’s time weathered, loving eyes. They went to where they remembered the arcade used to be. It was now a tattoo parlor. They ate dinner with their children and grandchildren. They smiled and joked. They said goodbyes, though the younger ones didn’t understand, the older ones fought the tears that threatened to spill over.
They went back to the nursing home. They sat in Kris’ bed and watched TV, talking about whatever was on their minds, purely because Jihae wanted to hear Kris' voice until they fell asleep in each other’s arms.
They didn’t wake up.
And that was the end of their time together.
So this is the end. I just posted the last 6 chapters up all at once because I was suddenly inspired and I wrote the last 6 chapters in one sitting. My brain hurts, and it's 3:18AM. I'll come back tomorrow-err later today to edit it. I didn't even bother finding chapter pictures because I'm so tired.
Thank you so much for reading!
Please comment what you think! You don't have to subscribe, since it's over now and there's no point in subscribing to a completed fic =P
Have a great rest of your summer, and again, thank you so so so so much for reading about Kris and Jihae.
