Prologue
Under False Pretenses ♥;“Kim Ji Yoo!”
Kim Dong Wook’s fist banged loudly down on his desk as he glared at his 16-year old daughter sitting lazily across him. She had cut her hair short and had been wearing baggy clothes for the past few weeks. He knew well enough that this was another one of Ji Yoo’s acts of “rebellion” against him. And it certainly did a hell of a good job annoying him.
“What?” Ji Yoo gazed at her dad as if he was a boring movie from the 1950s.
“Why are you doing this?” The businessman looked crossly at her. “You cut your hair, you wear clothes twice your size and you try to move like a boy. Am I supposed to believe you’re a lesbian now?”
“If that’s what it looks like, appa, then maybe.” As if to add insult to injury, Ji Yoo propped her feet up on her father’s desk.
“That’s it!” Kim Dong Wook yelled. He was a shark when it comes to business—handling the unpredictability of the economy, working with other tough businessmen and keeping the employees under him in line. But he was helpless when it comes to his family. The great Kim Dong Wook was powerless when it comes to his only daughter. “I’ve had enough of this.”
“Oh, wooh-hoo! I smell punishment.” The hard-headed teen said with heavy sarcasm.
Dong Wook took a few moments to calm down. He sat straight on his chair and looked at his troubled daughter sternly. Ji Yoo managed to get her feet off the table.
“I’m not going to give you a punishment.” The businessman said after a sigh. His answer made the teen sat up straight in surprise.
“You’re not?”
“No. Instead, why don’t we make a deal, an ultimatum if you will?” Dong Wook said in a tone that meant business. “I know that you want to be away from here. You’re always complaining of how sick you are of Seoul. I’ll be willing to give you what you’ve always wanted. You want to live alone in the US with my financial help, I’ll allow you to. But there’s a condition.”
Kim Dong Wook paused. His daughter finally looked like she was listening intently to him.
“My condition is this,” He continued. “You’ll study in a boarding school.”
Ji Yoo looked at her father incredulously. “Boarding school? You mean live at school?”
“Yes, but I’m not finished yet. You’ll study in a boarding school and you’ll have to go there as a boy.”
“A… A b-boy?!” Ji Yoo’s mouth fell open in shock.
“Yes. Since you’re acting like one right now. I figured you should. No one must know then of your real gender. Keep it up for a year and I’ll let you live in New York.”
“A… year?”
“Yes, that is my condition. If you can’t handle it, then there’s no deal. You’re here to stay in Korea, go to the university of my choice once the time comes and, eventually, you’ll work in the company. I’m giving you another option.”
Ji Yoo thought about the matter for a moment. She was finally close to having what she has always wanted: to get away from her father as far away as she can. Ji Yoo had waited a long time for a chance like this. She wouldn’t just let it slip away.
Without thinking more of it, she accepted.
“Deal.”
Kim Ji Yoo had no idea what she was putting herself into by agreeing.
