만남과 인사 [greetings]
안녕하세요:
[an-nyeong-ha-se-yo]
Hello
Typical Korean greeting! I bet you already knew this one?
안녕 means 'Well' 하세요 means 'Do' ( in 존대말 or formal language)
안녕 can also mean hello or goodbye... but this is in 반말 and not part of today's lesson.
안녕히 계세요: VS 안녕히 가세요:
[an-nyeong-hi ge-se-yo] [an-nyeong-hi ga-se-yo]
This is a farewell greeting in 존대말
* Whats the difference? First, look at the spelling! Its '계'(gye) vs '가'(ga)
Gye refers to '계시다 (gye-si-da)' which means to stay.
Ga refers to '가다 (ga-da)' which is to go.
The difference is that '안녕히 계세요' is basically 'goodbye' directed to someone who's staying.
'안녕히 가세요' is simply the oppositite and refers to the person who is going.
TRICKY, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE!
Be careful which greeting you use!
Example Conversation:
You: 안녕하세요
You: (Annyeonghaseyo)
You: (Hello)
Acquaintance: 아, 안녕하세요.. 가 봐야 되요.
Acquaintance: (Ah, Annyeonghaseyo.. Ga Bwaya Dweyo).
Acquiantance: (Ah, Hello.. I have to go).
You: 괜찮아요, 안녕히 가세요
You: Gwaenchanayo. Annyeonghi Gaseyo.
You: It's fine. Good bye (going).
Acquaintance: 안녕히 계세요
Acquaintance: Annyeonghi Gyeseyo.
Acquaintance: Good bye (staying).
고맙다 [thanks]
고맙습니다: VS 감사합니다:
[go-map-seum-ni-da] [gam-sa-ham-ni-da]
This is a thank you in 존대말 (formal language)
* Whats the difference? They're interchangeable!
고맙습니다 is from the verb 고맙다 which means to be thankful.
감사합니다 is from the verb 감사하다 which means to be thankful or to thank.
Which one do you use?
Any one is fine! They are both accepted in Korea!
Teacher's preference: I use 감사하다 more for 존대말 but I use 고맙습니다 more for 반말
반말 of 고맙습니다... You will not be tested on this anytime soon. Just good to learn~
고마워:
[go-ma-weo]
Thank you
