Students have or are in the process of learning the Korean

alphabet fluently. At this point, it's time to begin learning small

phrases to begin conversation with.

GEOGRAPHICAL FACT~

Korean is the official language of both the Republic of Korea (South Korea)

and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea),

which have a total combined population of around 73 million (50 million in the South and 23 million in the North)

SIMPLE PHRASES - Used in everyday Korean~

TO APOLOGIZE

사과하다

(Sa-Gwa-Hada)

죄송합니다:          VS         미안합니다:

 [Joe-Song-Hamnida]                                                                        [Mi-An-Hamnida]

This is the 'thank you' response in 존대말

* Whats the difference?

죄송합니다 is a bit more formal than 미안합니다 and you must definitely use this form when speaking to elders.

Also, 죄송합니다 is a more emphasized 'Sorry'. It's like you are more sorry than when you use 미안합니다.

When I speak, I use 미안합니다 more because I am usually not talking to people who are much more higher than me

and most of the time, I don't do something so wrong to say 죄송합니다. However, it's still very good to remember both forms of Sorry.

Example:

You accidently drop hot coffee on an elder. The elder is very mad, so you politely say '죄송합니다'.

You accidently hit an acquaintance who is probably around the same age as you on the arm. You say '미안합니다'

However, they are both interchangeable.

Very easy, right?

Choose your favorite, but remember them both!

SIMPLE PHRASES - Used in everyday Korean~

TO EXCUSE

실례하다

(Sil-lye-ha-da)

실례합니다:   VS   저기요:

     [Sil-rye-hamnida]                                               [Jeo-Gi-Yo]

This is the 'excuse me' response in 존대말

* Whats the difference?

실례합니다 is the most frequently used 'Excuse Me' in Korean because you can use it in any circumstance. When trying to get someone's attention, you can say '실례합니다' and they will understand, when trying to pass through a large crowd, you can say '실례합니다' and they will understsand... '실례합니다' is used for basically any situation in which you will have to say 'Excuse Me' however, 저기요 is not.

'저기요' is only used when trying to get someone's attention... in which you can still use '실례합니다' for that case. I would say, if there's any form of 'Excuse Me' that you must remember, '실례합니다' is definitely the best choice. '저기요' is also the formal way of saying 'there' being that '저기' means there and '요' is a formal ending.

잠시만요:   VS   잠깐만요:

     [Jam-Si-Man-Yo]                                               [Jam-Ggan-Man-yo]

This is a waiting response in 존대말

* Whats the difference?

잠시만요 and 잠깐만요 both mean basically the same thing 'just a moment/second/minute' however, 잠시만요 can be used when you need a lot more than just a moment. 잠깐만요 is more for like very quick waits where as  잠시만요 is more used for a bit more elongated waits.

Also, 잠깐만요 can also be used if you are trying to get someone's attention. It's kind of like 저기요.

Example:

You need to grab a piece of paper. You know this action will probably just take a few seconds so you say '잠깐만요.'

You need to clean your room because your mom is persisting. You know this action will probably take more than just a few seconds so you say '잠시만요'

However, they are both interchangeable.

Very easy, right?

Choose your favorite, but remember them both!

So let's review today's lesson.

To say sorry in Korean is either '죄송합니다' or 미안합니다'. '죄송합니다' is more formal but it gives more emphasis to your apology.

'실례합니다' is 'Excuse Me' which can be used in any situation but '저기요' is not. '저기요' is used when you're trying to get someone's attention. '저기요' can also mean there.

잠시만요 and 잠깐만요 both mean basically the same thing however 잠시만요 can be used for a more elongated time... like 'just a while'. 잠깐만요 can also be used when trying to get someone's attention.

On last night's homework, there was a most missed question 50% or more of the class got wrong... but these students had gotten them all correct!

minnie-- (5th time), mostvaluablepeasant, somebodyelse (very advanced answers!), b2utufulexotic and zombievegetarian had both gotten a 100!

잘 했어

Good job

(jal haess-eo)

잘 (Good) 했어 (Do - past tense)

On last night's homework, the most missed question was:

Your teacher says something, but you can't understand her. What's the 존대말 way of saying 'What' to her?

I was actually very happy that many people put '뭐?' however, that's not the correct answer in this circumstance.

Saying ' 뭐?' is pretty much like 반말, but in the question, I asked for 존대말.

Although I did not discuss '뭐' much in the other lesson, I put information about '네?' and when in context it is meant as 'What did you say?'

When responding to a person when they ask you '안녕하세요?', you respond back by saying '네?'

This was a confusing question, but there were also many people who also got the answer correct so I cannot through that question out.
