The vowels and consonants make up the Korean alphabet.
After being taught the Korean consonants, students learn
vowels. The Hangul is based on 10 lone vowel characters.

The hangul alphabet was created during the Joseon dynasty by King Sejong or Janghun Great King (장헌대왕).
It is told that he was staring at the paper walls one day, and saw shapes in them (squared) and therefore made a breakthrough and managed to create the hangeul alphabet.

ㅏ
'ah'
This character is the English equivalent to 'A'.
This is pronounced like 'a' in father.
EX: 안녕 (an-nyeong) : well/hello/goodbye
ㅓ
'eo'
This character has no real English equivalent, but can be identified as either 'o' or 'u' in situations.
This is pronounced as 'eo' in surgeon.
EX: 어머 (eo-meo) : oh my
ㅔ
'eh'
This character is the English equivalent to E.
This is pronounced like 'e' in met.
EX: 예뻐 (yeh-bbeo) : pretty.
ㅣ
'ee'
This character is the English equivalent to 'I'.
This is pronounced like 'ee' in beetle.
EX: 있어 (iss-eo) : exist/have
ㅗ
'oh'
This character is the English equivalent to 'O'.
This is pronounced like 'o' in bowl.
EX: 몰라 (mol-ra) : don't know
ㅜ
'oo'
This character is the English equivalent to 'U'.
This is pronounced like 'oo' in moon.
EX: 수영 (soo-yeong) : swimming
ㅐ
'ae'
There is no English equivalent however it is like the letter 'E',

This character is not present in the English language.
This character is hard to pronounce for new learners, however, it is sounding like 'oo' in brook with a more lazy mouth.
EX: 키스 (kee-seu) : kiss
ㅑ
'yah'
This is the 'y' form of the letter 'ㅏ' or 'A'
This character produces the 'ya' sound like yawn.
EX: 뭐야 (mweo-ya) : what is this?
ㅕ
'yeo'
This is the 'y' form of the letter 'ㅓ' or 'Eo'
This character produces the 'yeo' sound like in yum.
EX: 여자 (yeo-jah) : woman
ㅖ
'yeh'
This is the 'y' form of the letter 'ㅔ' or 'Eh'
This character produces a 'yeh' sound like in yes.
EX: ㅖ(yeh) : yes (mostly used in southern part of South Korea)
ㅛ
'yo'
This is the 'y' form of the letter 'ㅗ' or 'O'
This character produces a 'yoh' sound like in yoyo.
EX: 안녕하세요 (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo) : hello
ㅠ
'yoo'
This is the 'y' form of the letter 'ㅜ' or 'oo'
This character produces the 'yoo' in you.
EX: 유키스 (yoo kee-seu) : U-Kiss
There are other vowel letter combinations in Korean, however, you will learn that later, not today.
However, you can just see them, but will not be tested on them.
ㅘ (wa like in water)
ㅙ (wae like in wae - Korean way of saying why)
ㅝ (weo like in wonder),
ㅞ (weh like in wet)
ㅚ (weh like in wait)
ㅟ (wee like in week)
ㅢ (which doesn't appear in English language but is kind of like the Canadian 'oi' but with more emphasis on the o')
