Chapter Three: Midnight Meetings and Snowball Fights
A Beautiful InconvenienceThat night I couldn’t sleep so I walked downstairs to get some tea. I sat down at the table and stared out the window. The snow had started to fall. There was already a good layer covering the ground. I smiled.
While it was inconvinient, I couldn’t help but admit that it was extremely beautiful.
Eli POV:
I couldn’t sleep and walked down the stairs. I was startled to see Hyerin already sitting there, staring out the window. I smiled and leaned against the door frame to watch her for a minute. I could feel myself slowly falling for her. I still barely knew her, but I had been drawn to her from the very beginning with our first awkward and clumsy encounter. I stood up straight and decided to make my presence know.
“It’s beautiful,” I said. She looked up, startled.
“Oh-oh, ne. I was just thinking that,” She said. I smiled. That hadn’t exactly been what I was really thinking or what I really wanted to say, but that’s all that would come out. Saying your beautiful had my stomach in knots and my mouth refused to spill it out, even though that’s what my heart was truly saying.
I made some tea and sat down with her. We watched the snow fall together.
“When there gets to be enough snow I want to go out and play in it.” She looked at me, surprised.
“Well of course. What use is snow if you don’t play in it?” She asked innocently. I looked at her and laughed. I could tell I was really going to like this girl.
Hyerin POV
The next day I woke up to Minah jumping on my bed.
“Hyerin! Hyerin! Wake up! Unnie’s here!” She cheered. I sat up and wiped my eyes.
“Unnie? Hannah Unnie?” I asked.
“Ne!~”
“Oh, okay, I‘m coming.” Minah nodded and ran off. I quickly got up and dressed. I ran down the stairs.
“Unnie!” I cheered when I saw her.
“Hyerin!” She cheered in return. We quickly hugged.
“I hear your staying here for Christmas.” She said.
“Ne~” I replied.
“Wow! Fun!” She laughed. “Just don’t let my little brother here bother you too much. You just let me know if he does.” She grabbed Eli and put her arm around his neck.
“Yah!” He blushed and she laughed.
“Aigoo! My little brother has gotten so big!” She exclaimed. He just stood there in defeat as she continued to . Minah and I of course couldn’t help but laugh.
~Two days later~
Eli POV:
Sure enough, in a few days the ground was thouroughly coved in snow and it was the GOOD kind of snow. Not the kind that just flakes of or turns into mush immediately, but the kind that makes the perfect snowballs. Hyerin and Minah had just walked outside and were admiring all the snow around them.
“Wow! So pretty!” They commented. Little did they know that I was planning an attack: with snowballs.
“Hey Minah!” I yelled. She turned to look at me.
“Ne?”
“CATCH!!!” I yelled as I threw the first snowball. It hit her square in the chest. She looked down at it then back up at me.
“Oh, it’s on now.” She said calmly. She then bent down to gather up a bunch of snow to throw at me. But before she could gather it all I threw another on at her. Then another. “Yah!” She yelled. Finally she managed to make one and hurled it at me. I ducked and it just barely missed me.
“Ha!” I yelled at her.
“Hmph.” She started gathering more.
“Yah! Hyerin! Help me!” She said. Hyerin had just been standing there watching us and laughing. I laughed and threw one at her. I had caught her by surprise and she looked at me shocked. I bent over in laughter.
“Get him!” Minah yelled. Hyerin smilled mischeviously and started making her own snowballs. Soon there was a full on snowball fight going on in our front yard. It was awesome!
Finally, we were all tired, cold, and soaked with snow. We slowly began to trudge back inside, just as Minah, Hannah, and I had always done as kids after a snowball fight. Oma already had hot chocolate and towels laid out in the kitchen for us. She took our coats as we walked in so that we wouldn’t drip all over the house. We rushed into the kitchen and sat down at the table to sip our hot drinks.
Yeah, I definatly felt like a kid again. It was good to be back.
We were completely exhausted after our snowball fight, so we stayed inside and watched some movies and stuff. But the next day we went back out to build a snowman. It took us forever to finish, but it was worth it. It was probably the best snowman we had all ever made. It was a little shorter than me and huge. We gave it stick arms, a carrot nose, and little rock eyes. Sadly, we had no coal… Then we even gave it a hat, gloves, and scarf. When we were finally finished we all stepped back to admire our work.
“Wow!” Hyerin said,
“I’ve never made such a good snowman!”
“Chincha?” Minah asked her.
“Ne. Where I’m from it rarely snows enough to make a really good snowman.”
“Aww, that’s so sad. Well, let’s take a picture, so that we can always remember our awesome snowman!” We got mom to come outside and the three of us all stood around the snowman while she took a picture of us. It was a really great day.
