Foreword
Prologue: My heart, it beats for only you.
Life is unfair - most of us must have heard those words or must have even muttered those words. But don’t you think that life, being unfair to every one of us, makes it fair?
It’s funny how something could change everything in an instant flash of a second, without any warning, catching us unawares.
It is ironic that one particular task would consume hours to be accomplished, but would take only a few seconds for it to be destroyed. Like the principles in life that take decades or even a whole lifetime to be perfected, but only to be bent by a single, mostly unreasonable, reason.
A single mistake is all it takes to destroy and end the life that you have crafted for years.
A single wrong turn is all it takes to turn a lengthy journey into a waste.
Tick…Tock…
Time heals. But at the same time it could destroy everything in just one quick pace of its hand.
Why would you do, if time played a trick on you? What if your life’s clock suddenly reached its end? Would you feel cheated? What would make you realize that your life was worth it, despite the short run, everything was worthy?
oOo
A pair of blinding lights pierced through my eyes, and in a sudden flash, everything turned upside down. My head throbbed in an unbearable pain, my whole body quivered as it drowned in the warm crimson fluid emanating from my lacerated flesh.
Tick…Tock… Time’s up.
I could sense my near ending, and I am sure of it.
Why would you do, if time played a trick on you? What if your life’s clock suddenly reached its end?
I decided to keep my eyes closed, as I gradually submit to my tragic fate. I didn’t want the chaotic scene around me to be the last thing in my sight before I go. I didn’t want to leave, yet it seemed like it was already my time, and I could do nothing to reverse it.
What would make you realize that your life was worth it, despite the short run, everything was worthy?
The only thing that I wanted to see before leaving was the face that changed my whole life, and served as my whole world.
Her angelic face slowly made its way to lighten up the darkness in my eyes.
Her pair of crescent-shaped eyes melted my heart like it always did whenever she smiled.
Her face which reflected love, took away all of the pain.
Her face showed who I am, and found me whenever I am lost.
I wanted to hold on to that face, I could look at her forever.
My life was worth it, despite the short run, everything was worthy.
My lips curved a small yet sincere smile as I remembered my life with her.
How we first met. How we fell in love with each other. How we surpassed every challenge together. How we shared tears and laughs. How we became one.
I memorized her flawless assets, her deep brown eyes, her perfect nose, her plump lips, her touch, her taste, her smell.
I wanted her to be the last thing inside my mind, so she could be the first thing that I will think of when I set out on my next journey.
‘Do you love me?’
‘What kind of question is that?’
‘Just answer it!’
‘Aww! Don’t be mad.’
‘…..’
‘I love you.’
‘Until when?’
‘As long as my heart is still beating.’
‘Really?’
‘And even after it stops beating.’
‘You’re making me cry.’
‘Babo! You asked for it!’
‘I love you too. Forever.’
I used all of my remaining energy to hold the necklace wrapped around my neck.
My fingertips traced the key pendant, and my nose welcomed the metallic smell which probably emanated from its material and from the sticky substance that engulfed it.
My voice sounded horse, my throat ached from aridness, but still, I forced myself to speak.
“Fany-ah, my heart would only beat for you. I love you……As long as my heart is still beating.”
I wanted those words to be the last ones to come out of my lips.
Dugeun…………dugeun…….………dug…….eun…………….dug………………….eun………………….
I wanted to hold on to that promise.
