Chapter 15: Surprise Trip

It was the next day in class when everything started to change. The English professor shocked everyone when he made an announcement to the class. “I have decided to extend your assignment another week.” There were many cheers from students in the class. “I have decided to do this because I feel that there are many groups that are struggling to work together.”

“Now, in order to get these groups to work better together, I have arranged a field trip for you guys.” There were many more cheers at the mention of a trip. “We have already received permission from your parents and other teachers to excuse you from classes for two days. So, on Thursday morning, we will board a bus and we will be going camping until Sunday. Make sure that you pack extra clothes and remember to bring your shower supplies. The school will provide tents for us to use. Any questions?”

A girl in the front of the room raised their hand. “How will the sleeping arrangements be decided?”

“There are five tents for us to use. Tent assignments will be based upon your groups. If you are in a same gender group, you will be sharing a tent with your partner and possibly another pair of the same gender. If you have a partner of the opposite gender, you will be separated and share tents with those of the same gender that also have opposite gender partners. Does that make sense? Basically all the girls with boys for partners will share a tent and those boys will share another. There will also be three adults coming with us, myself included. Any other questions?”

When no one raised their hand, the teacher continued. “Okay, make sure that you all remember to bring a pillow as well otherwise you will very uncomfortable.”

“One last thing. There will be special tasks that you and your partner must complete. On this sheet of paper, I have made a list of different tasks that you and your partner will need to complete during this trip. There are three tasks that each group will need to do. Each team will be instructed to plan and prepare a meal for the rest of the class at some point throughout the trip. You must work together to gather the ingredients that you will need for the meal that you plan to make. I have also included a list of all the supplies that will be made available for you to use. I will post both of these lists on the chalkboard. When I’m finished talking, come up and see what you and your partner will be responsible for. Does everyone understand?”

Again, there was no response. “Good, now spend the rest of the class talking with your partner on what you will bring for the trip.” With that the teacher walked out of the room, leaving the students to work together to prepare for their trip.

Once the teacher was out of the room, the students in the classroom started standing up and switching place around the room, sitting with their partners. There was a lot of chatter about how excited the students were to be able to go on a trip as well as getting and extension on their assignment. Students were taking turns looking at the list of tasks and starting to plan how they were going to go about completing them.

Not everyone in the room was as excited, however. Junhyung and Hyunseung both remained seated at their desks, refusing to get up. ‘This ing teacher is just ing with me. How the hell can he make me sleep in the same tent as that ?!’ Junhyung’s anger was building inside of him. He turned to glare at his partner, directing his anger for the teacher at the older boy. He stood up quickly slamming his hands on his desk, catching the attention of everyone else.

“Who the hell does that teacher think he is?! There is no way I’m sleeping next to that ! I don’t ing care anymore, it’s not ing happening!” Junhyung glared hatefully at his partner half expecting him to respond after the time they spent together the night before but the older boy said nothing. He just lowered his head more, biting his lip, and tried to disappear from the room. The bully scoffed before turning and walking out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

Once the door was closed and the students heard the footsteps fade away, whispers erupted in the room. “Teacher is so cruel…” “How can he do that to Junhyung…” “I bet the is excited to sleep next to another man…” Hyunseung sighed silently at the whispers coming from around him. Slowly he began to pack up his supplies before standing up and walking up to the list of tasks he and his tormentor would have to complete while on the camping trip.

“Hyunseung and Junhyung:

1. Prepare and cook lunch for the entire class on Friday.

2. Go on a photo scavenger hunt with your partner. You will compete against the rest of the class to capture pictures of everything on the list the fastest. Your time slot for the hunt will be Thursday night from 6-9. The winners will be announced Monday in class.

3. You and your partner will be responsible for taking part in one of the following activities together. You must both participate to your best abilities or your project grade will be affected. Options: Rock Climbing, Hiking, Flag Football, and Dance Duet. It is up to you and your partner to decide which activity you would like to participate in.”

Hyunseung groaned silently as he read the list of tasks that he and his tormentor would have to complete. ‘This teacher really is trying to get me killed…’ Regretfully, the injured boy took out a piece of paper and wrote down the tasks. With another sigh, he walked out of the room to find his partner so they could discuss what they were going to do.

It didn’t take Hyunseung too long to find his fuming partner. Junhyung was sitting in his usually spot in the classroom where they met after school. He had found that during the day not many students came to this classroom and the teachers had no reason to go there so it was the perfect place to get away from everyone else. He wasn’t expecting the person that he spent so much time bullying to come looking for him, however.

“What the do you want, ? You’re just asking for me to punch you.” Junhyung glared before closing his eyes and leaning back in his chair, deciding that the other boy was too much trouble at the moment.

Hyunseung walked further into the room and sat in the seat next to his partner. “I have the list of tasks that we have to do on the camping trip.” He waited for the younger boy to open his eyes and take the piece of paper that he was holding out to him. With an exaggerated sigh, Junhyung took the piece of paper and began reading the list. The more he read the more pissed off he became. Once he was finished he threw the piece of paper back at the other boy and crossed his arms, leaning back in his chair again.

”There’s no way in hell I’m doing all that stuff with you. That teachers ing lost his mind.”

Hyunseung  sighed once again as he bent down to pick up the paper that had fallen to the floor. “Why don’t you it up and just deal with it. You pouting isn’t going to solve anything.” Junhyung turned angrily at the other boy getting ready to yell once again. Hyunseung continued before he could however.

“Just think about how surprised our teacher would be if neither of us complained to him about this for once. He might even stop being an to us every step of this assignment. What do you say?” Hyunseung tilted his head to the right slightly, his hair falling away from his face a bit, showing his eyes more clearly.

Junhyung stared at his partner. ‘How the is he doing that?! With one look all I want is to go along with whatever he says. Well, it’s not going to work! There’s no way in hell I’m letting that teacher get away with this!’ “Fine.” His mouth betrayed his mind before he could stop it.

A small smile formed on Hyunseung’s face at the younger boy’s response. He had no idea how he had gotten the other boy to agree with him so quickly but he wasn’t going to test his luck by trying to figure out what had caused the change of heart. He turned back to the piece of paper to begin planning causing him to miss the smallest change in color on his partner’s face.

“Good. Now, what do you want to make for lunch?” Hyunseung took out another piece of paper to write down their ideas. Junhyung begrudgingly sat up to help plan their share of the tasks.
