Challenge 3: Regret

What it Takes

"No, no, no, no, Jongin!" Baekhyun's eyes started to water. He'd only known he other for all of two hours, but he'd felt a connection between the two. Almost like brothers.

Jongin broke out in a cold sweat, his eyes starting to cloud, and his breathing labored. "I don't think I'm gonna make it, Baekhyun..."

"No! You will! You'll make it, I won't let you die, not without getting to Kyungsoo first!" Baekhyun said, his lip quivering and a tear falling from his eye onto Jongin's cheek.

Hours seemed to pass, though it was mere seconds that ticked away while Jongin's heart stopped. Baekhyun looked down at him, seeing his body start to shimmer and flicker as if it were a hologram losing its projection. He suddenly went more solid and a sigh of relief was heard from the small speakers on the screen.

"I think they brought me back!" Jongin said breathlessly, clutching his chest. He smiled and hugged Baekhyun out of sheer joy, almost squealing.

Baekhyun just smiled and hugged back, helping him stand. "Well, we passed this one. Onto the next one, I suppose."

"Yeah," Jongin smiled. He didn't die. He could see Kyungsoo again, and that made his previously dead heart almost stop again in joy.

The two boys walked into the next room. The floor was concrete with two metal fold-out chairs in the center of the room, and a few bare light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. All around, the aura was creepy and dangerous.

Baekhyun unconsciously looked to his right and reached his hand out for Chanyeol, but only caught air. He knew Chanyeol wasn't there, but he couldn't help but wish he could just hide in his arms at the eerie sight of the room.

There were no speakers on the wall, ceiling, or floor, so they figured the voice probably wasn't going to come though and tell them what to do. They already knew anyway.

"Tell me this creeps you out too..." Baekhyun whispered, starting towards the chairs.

"It does." Jongin followed, sitting in the chair next to him. "Now what?"

"I don't know. There aren't any speakers, so..?"

"You're almost done with this test." The voice came through. "And I don't need speakers."

"So, what do we do?" Jongin asked nervously.

"You are to tell each other about the moment you most regret with you're loved one." The voice said, cutting off right after.

"Oh dear god..." Baekhyun sighed. "I really don't wanna..."

"I'll go first, I guess," Jongin shrugged, leaning back in his chair.

"Thanks."

"Um, it was a little while ago, but..."

Jongin sat in Kyungsoo's living room, staring ahead at the wall.

"What are you doing?"

"I was waiting for you..."

"Why?" Kyungsoo looked at Jongin, a frown on his lips.

"I wanted to talk to you..." Jongin sighed. "When I was at Minseok's last week—"

"I'm gonna stop you right there," Kyungsoo sighed. "He got you drunk, didn't he?"

"Yeah, but—"

"But what?"

"He didn't do anything, I promise. Someone else did. I don't remember who it was, I was too hammered. All I remember is it was another dude with blonde hair and he was feeling me up..." Jongin could feel Kyungsoo's cold stare piercing through him, so he stopped talking. "I... I let him take me home, Soo. I was so drunk, I didn't know what I was doing. I'm really sorry..."

Kyungsoo was silent for a minute. "How is 'sorry' gonna fix this?" He said, turning his back to Jongin.

"It's not. I just wanted you to know so you didn't find out later or from someone else, Soo. I regret it so much, and I don't even remember if we did anything at his place or not."

"Get out."

"What?"

"The one thing I asked of you..." Kyungsoo felt a tear slip from his eye. "You betrayed my trust. You know how that hurt my last relationship, you were there for me, Jongin. But, you need to leave. Get out. Now!"

Jongin nodded, biting his quivering lip. "I'm sorry, Soo. I'm really sorry..." He whispered before leaving.

"Wow..." Baekhyun sighed. "I'm so sorry..."

"The worst part is I still don't even know who the guy is or if we did anything..." Jongin sniffled.

"Well, I don't think mine's that bad, but..." Baekhyun took a deep breath.

Chanyeol reached out to wipe the tear from Baekhyun's face, but it was pushed away by the latter.

"You can't. After ignoring me like that and letting all of those people—"

"Baekhyun, I'm really sorry."

"Like saying that is gonna pick up the million pieces my heart is in..."

Chanyeol's face fell. "How was I supposed to know?"

"Oh, I don't know, look at me for more than two seconds!" Baekhyun screamed. "Actually care about me instead of doing this to stop your friends from trying to set you up with people!"

"Baek, listen—"

"To what? You trying to say that you genuinely care for me? All those kisses didn't mean nothing? That's not gonna work, because now I don't know when you're faking it and lying." Baekhyun stood up and stomped towards the door, bolting out. He sprinted towards his friend's dorm. He couldn't believe that Chanyeol had made him fall in love and that he was just using him so that his friends wouldn't set him up. He felt so betrayed. He knew that it was fake, and that Chanyeol probably didn't really even love him, but he couldn't help but cry.

"Man, was I wrong..." Baekhyun sighed, slightly smiling and wiping a tear off of his cheek. "He really does love me..."

"From what I've heard from Soo, he does." Jongin smiled.

"Kyungsoo talks about me? I mean, I know him from class, and I guess you could say we're kinda close, but..." Baekhyun chuckled. "I didn't take him for the kind to talk about anything other than what was at hand."

Jongin smiled. "He's full of surprises."

"You have both passed," the voice came back, seemingly louder than ever. "Proceed through the cellar door in the corner."

Jongin and Baekhyun stood up and walked over to the cellar doors, opening them slowly only to see darkness.

"Wanna jump together? It looks pretty far..." Baekhyun asked, looking through the doors.

"Yeah," Jongin grabbed Baekhyun's arm. "On three?"

"Yeah."

"One, two," they shared a glance. "Three!"

They stepped over the edge and jumped into the darkness, the air becoming thick and heavy. Everything around them started to show flashes of color, and eventually they heard buzzing. They each opened their eyes and saw white hospital walls. They made it.
