on my way to school,
I got a call from my family in Hokkaido asking me about how I was and saying how much the family missed me.
I was very touched by the call and it brought so many things into my mind,
but I decided that it will not stop me.

as I stepped into the school grounds, I dusted off the snow on my coat and hung it around my arms.
I scanned my surroundings inquisitively.
three years.
I’ve waited three years to get into this place.
countless falls,
numerous setbacks,
unnumbered auditions,
accumulated debts,
immeasurable hardwork,
all the tears.
finally,
it got me here,
to where I really want to be.
Seoul Performing School of Arts.
and from now on,
Mitsuki shall be known as Park Aerin.

I recalled all that my elder brother told me,
to be brave and to be undaunted.
I fought for so hard to travel from Hokkaido to Tokyo back and forth near ten times through my whole life,
just to attend auditions from Korean performing schools.
when I got through and got myself a place here,
I knew that I have to hang on to what fate brings me.
all the sacrifice,
will be worth it.
simply because,
there’s no turning back.

I adjusted my red and brown checkered vest,
made sure my inner white blouse was straight and tidy,
and gave my black skirt a little pat.
my hair was neat and tidy and my fringe was held by a hairband with a black ribbon.

I greeted the headmaster at the general administrative office.
he was the judge at my Tokyo auditions and the one who gave me my golden ticket to Korea.
I bowed a 90 degree bow at him.
“Mitsuki, ah no, I forgot you’re Park Aerin now. Welcome to spsa. I’m your headmaster for your academic year, mr Jang.”
he reached out a friendly hand and I shook it.
click I heard the shutter go.
“if there’s nothing else, you can go leave your things in the locker area and I’ll see you in class later!”

I stepped up to my locker area.
“so.. you’re the new chick from Japan? Hokkaido or whatever..”
a guy leaned on my locker, forbidding me to open it.
he gave me a wink.
“yes I’m from Hokkaido, not from whatever. and thank you?”
I gestured him to step aside for me to open my locker and deposit my books in there.
“what do you think you are? A pretty innocent, cute little pretty doll?”
a girl came by along and sneered as she laid her hands on that guy.
“someone thinks she’s our SPSA mascot, look at how rosy her cheeks are.”
a girl came forth to pinch my cheeks tauntingly.
“ha, you guys are funny.”
I slapped her hand off tried to walk away after locking my locker.
I placed the key in my pocket.
“ooh, look at how she blinks. does she think she’s really a Japanese doll or what? I bet she hooked up with the headmaster to jump into ace class. we worked our off training for two years to get in here.”
another girl came along and it seemed that they all knew each other.
they waved a picture of the smiling Mr Jang shaking my hand in front of my face.
“well, maybe then she could get us into ace class too, by pulling strings..”
that guy said as he came closer and closer.
“after I try getting up that skirt of hers.” he smirked.
the girl who was leaning on him then looked to him with puppy eyes,
“oppa, you can’t ditch me for such a .”

WHAT?
me,
a ?!!
look at your fawning,
I bet you’re better at being a than me.

I thought I contained that after thought within me,
but I actually said it out loud right in their faces.
suddenly,
I felt the crowd in the corridors coming up to corner me.
the fawning girl came up to me and reached into my pocket.
“come get your key, dolly girl.” She stuck her tongue out.
and then I realized that she stepped back and left me with a group of even more fearsome looking people.
this is when my black belt taekwondo and judo comes into use..
I gulped and thought of what to do to deal with this situation.
I knew that if I started a fight,
I’d definitely get kicked out.
and that’s not the thing I want to happen to me on my first day of school.

I tried to step back more and more until I saw one girl lift up her hand,
she was aiming at my face.
at this moment,
a figure stood in front of me.
“sunbaenim..” the girl retreated,
“I’m just trying to.”
I could see that there was fear in her eyes as she stuttered.

the guy who taunted me earlier on stepped up and gave the figure a bow,
“sunbae, we’re just trying to teach this new student a lesson for being audacious.”
“haha, more like you guys are bullying new students. Where did you learn such things from.” The figure spoke.
his voice was nice and clear,
slightly mellow but soothing.
he emitted the light fragrance of pine trees as I stared at his back.
“give her back her key, and scram.”
they handed the key while trembling.
the figure took it from them forcefully and handed the key back to me without even turning back.
“gomaweo.” I uttered and took it from him.
he walked away without saying anything but just nodded.
then I realized,
he did not just give me back my key.
there was also a pair of earrings in the shape of a key.
it was sliver and it shimmered under the lights of the corridor.
just who is this?
