The In-Betweens and Ending
Departure's Boy-friendPlot Summary
- After the events of Chapter 26, they have final examinations, then get promoted to grade twelve. Throughout the last year of high school, Minseok and Luhan occupy the last row desks. Jongdae and Yixing take the desks directly in front of theirs, making it easier for them to pass notes during classes.
- Minseok and Jongdae visit the playground bench they used to adore back in their kindergarten days where they used to have lunch. They relive their childhood days by blowing bubble with bubblegums, bringing snacks to share with each other, talking nonsense, telling each other about anything and everything, discussing what to do in the future, reciting fairy tales.
Minseok, without himself knowing, is inclined to gaze softly at Jongdae while the latter speaks, naturally and sincerely smiling when the other smiles, laughing when the other laughs. Similarly, Jongdae's eyes always seek for Minseok. Everywhere. Whenever Minseok speaks, he is all ears, pauses doing whatever he was doing before to give all attention to the other male, as if there could be no one else as important to him as his Minnie.
- Concerned for Jongdae's health when seeing him smoke often, Minseok demands him to stop, as they saunter along a silent corridor after school. Jongdae, out of the blue, seizes his shoulders and pushes him against the nearest wall. He then slowly inches his face close to Minseok's, all the while staring intently into his eyes, and says, "If I stop smoking, would you kiss me? As a reward?" Minseok is left speechless, with a thundering heart. Jongdae pulls away, telling him that he's only joking. But, Jongdae does gradually abandon his smoking habit.
- On Minseok's birthday, Jongdae gives him two gifts. The first present is a bicolor, chubby little kitten. "If I disappear again, she'll keep you company." Minseok names her Nymphadora, after a cat plushie he used to own when he was a toddler. The second gift makes Minseok break down in happy incredulous tears, for he feels so cherished: Jongdae declares that he has completely put a brake to cigarettes, plus alcohol -- for him.
- Jongdae gets in a fight one night. He and his gang members decide to split up so the enemies will get confused as to who to follow. Injured, he opts to stop by Minseok's house -- because he's in the neighborhood -- after making sure no one's following him. Minseok helps clean his wounds and apply medicine. Minseok drops tender pecks onto his bandaged palms before bestowing a kiss upon his forehead. "There, ouchy will shoo away now."
- Minseok introduces Jongdae to his parents so that they'll get acquainted with him and realize he isn't a bad person. The parents still object to them being friends due to Jongdae's mafia connections and the dangers their son might be confronted with. Understanding the parents' worry, Jongdae vows that, unless they want him to, he'll never approach Minseok again, as he also doesn't wish for his best friend to get harmed because of him.
- True to his promise, Jongdae keeps his distance from Minseok, gives him the cold shoulder. It is in those moments that he deeply and thoroughly feels Jongdae's abs
