Suited
PerturbNayeon sighed heavily as Nara sat beside here, in her own world as she read one of the few books she’d packed in her bag. There was an unsettling feeling in her stomach and she didn’t know why. Every few seconds she’d look around, hoping to find something suspicious. She sighed heavily, looking at the time for the third time in the same minute. They still had a little more time until boarding and she was bored out of her mind. Sulking, she pulled out her phone, entertaining herself by browsing through shopping sites.
“Ma, are you okay?” Nara asked.
“Hmm? Of course sweetheart. Why do you ask?” Nayeon chuckled dryly.
“Well, you keep looking at the clock every few seconds.” Nara pointed out.
“I’m just excited to board the plane. It’s been so long since I’ve been on one.” Nayeon lied.
“Oh Ma! I’m here with you this time so you don’t have to be afraid, okay?” Nara comforted. Nayeon couldn’t help but giggle at her daughter’s cuteness.
“I have my princess Nara to protect me?” She played along.
“Yes! Rely on me Ma!” Nara proclaimed, jumping up.
“Alright sweetheart; I’m going to put all my trust on you.” Nayeon smiled, kissing Nara’s head.
“Ma, look, it’s the girls from earlier!” Nara pointed towards the familiar heads.
“Nara, sweetheart, pointing isn’t a good thing, okay?” Nayeon informed.
“Sorry Ma! But can we go talk to them? Please?” Nara pouted.
“We don’t even know who they are sweetheart. We shouldn’t talk to strangers.” Nayeon replied.
“But they already helped me find you earlier so they’re no longer strangers.” Nara fussed, stomping her feet.
“Fine.” Nayeon said hesitantly. “But you’re to stay with me at all times, okay?”
Nara nodded, a grin etched on her face. She didn’t expect to melt her mum’s defences as quickly as she’d done so. But the thing was that she wanted to be friends with them since they seemed very nice. Though, her mum did say that all nice people weren’t friendly. She always seemed to find herself liking quieter people which explains why she liked the taller one of the two girls rather than the blonde one. She didn’t know what came over her when she decided to trust her so easily. Nara just felt like she could believe them and that they weren’t going to hurt anyone.
Before her mum could say anything and stop her, Nara ran into Tzuyu’s embrace, shocking her once again. Nayeon’s eyes widened at her daughter’s behaviour and she ran towards them, pulling Nara out of Tzuyu’s embrace.
“I’m sorry about that.” Nayeon apologised, bowing to the girls.
“There’s nothing to apologise for, she’s adorable.” Sana chuckled, patting Nara’s head.
Tzuyu was still frozen in her spot, the surprise taking a bigger toll on her than she expected it to. Sana nudged her, bringing her out of her daze. Earning a glare from her best friend, Tzuyu smiled sheepishly, bowing in greeting.
“Are you on the flight to the US?” Sana asked, pointing at their boarding gate.
“Yes we are; does the same go for you?” Nayeon asked, surprised.
“Yep! We’re going to be there for a little holiday.” Sana nodded, looking to Tzuyu who was awkwardly talking to Nara.
Nayeon realised it was a lot easier to open up to the girls than she realised it would be. Sana just asked a question and Nayeon answered immediately. If she were to be completely honest, she liked the fact that she could talk to someone without worrying. She was glad that Nara had dragged her along here to talk to them. Nayeon couldn’t help but notice Tzuyu’s occasional glance towards Sana. It was quick, but easily noticeable.
“Are you two together?” Nayeon pushed to ask. It sure looked like the two were in a relationship. The question seemed to take both of them by surprise. Tzuyu blushed while Sana looked at Nayeon with widened eyes.
“N-no. I just had a break up so Tzuyu suggested an overseas trip would do wonders. She’s my best friend.” Sana clarified, risking a glance at Tzuyu. Realising that it seemed she hadn’t heard any part of the conversation, she sighed in relief. But why was she hoping Tzuyu hadn’t heard it? It won’t change anything between them, would it?
“Ah, I’m sorry for insinuating the possibility.” Nayeon apologised, feeling embarrassed.
“It’s no problem, really. How about you? Going for a family visit? Sana questioned.
“W-we’re moving there.” Nayeon explained, looking over to Nara.
“For your daughter? That’s cute.” Sana chuckled, feeling so much happiness in her heart as she watched Tzuyu laugh along with Nara.
“I want the best for her.” Nayeon murmured, Sana nodding in understanding.
“Hey Nara, won’t you come talk to me?” Sana pouted, pretending to be sad. She knew that Nara seemed to have formed some kind of bond with Tzuyu already. She found it quite adorable.
“How long have the two of you been friends?” Nayeon asked Tzuyu since Sana was being entertained by Nara.
“For about 10 years. Maybe a little more. We met in school.” Tzuyu smiled at the memory.
“How long have you liked her in those years?” Nayeon pushed.
“You can tell?” Tzuyu said, eyes widening at her response before she placed a hand over .
“Aha, I had a feeling. You’re always looking towards her longingly and you blushed when I asked you if you were together. I think it’s cute that you’ve fallen in love with your best friend.” Nayeon smiled, patting Tzuyu’s shoulder.
Sana flicked her eyes towards them for a mere second, not sure what their conversation would be about if Nayeon was patting Tzuyu’s shoulder. Actually, why was I caring? She huffed, giving her attention back to Nara in front of her.
“Actually, it’s not that cute.” Tzuyu mumbled. “She doesn’t know, never actually realised.”
Nayeon gasped, stifling it with her hand. “So how long?”
“About five years.” Tzuyu admitted, looking over at Sana for a few moments.
“Never confessed?” Nayeon asked.
“Nope. I don’t want to ruin whatever we have. And she’s always been in a relationship with someone at any given time. I feel like she’d deserve better. I’d rather stay by her side and support her than risk losing her.” Tzuyu said, shaking her head.
“My god, you’re brave and strong. I can’t believe you’ve been going on for the past five years. It’s admirable.” Nayeon said, eyes full of appreciation. She might not be able to empathise but she knew that Tzuyu must have been going through a difficult time.
“Thank you.” Tzuyu mumbled, blushing.
“You know, don’t take this as false hope but she’s been glaring at me every few minutes.” Nayeon smirked.
“No way! She’s probably just surprised I’m talking to someone else.” Tzuyu chuckled.
“I told you not to take it as false hope!” Nayeon pouted.
“Nope, it can’t be.” Tzuyu said, smiling at Nayeon’s generosity. “How about you?”
“What about me?” Nayeon retorted.
“Well, what about your love life? Her parent?” Tzuyu asked, indicating to Nara.
“Ah, that’s a long story.” Nayeon laughed bitterly.
“We have time.” Tzuyu said, crossing her arms in anticipation.
“I’d rather not talk about it.” Nayeon mumbled, looking away from Tzuyu’s piercing gaze.
“It’s just not something I want to recall as of yet.” Nayeon explained.
“That bad?” Tzuyu whispered. “I’m sorry for pushing you about it.”
“No, it’s fine. I might tell you, you never know.” Nayeon added, winking at Tzuyu who blushed in return.
By this point, Sana was officially pissed off as she was seated next to the two of them. Nara looked on with curiosity, wanting to know the reason for the change of the mood between everyone. She had been talking to Sana about her parents and she might have let slip that her Ma was a divorcee. Was that a bad thing she’d just done? She was just trying to explain something, she didn’t mean to make anyone upset. She teared up, thinking about the possibility of hurting someone. Ma always said that the people who hurt others are the worst kind of people. Did that make her a bad person?
“Nara, sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Nayeon panicked, rushing over to her daughter to comfort her. Why had she suddenly started crying? Hugging her, she tried to provide comfort; her sobs slowly turning into sniffles.
“I’m sorry Ma.” Nara whispered.
“For what sweetheart?” Nayeon asked, wiping away her tears.
“I’m a bad person.” She muttered.
“Why do you say that? You’re not a bad person.” Nayeon shook her head.
“But I think I hurt someone. I think I made them upset.” Nara explained. She felt guilty and she didn’t like it at all. What if her Ma didn’t like her anymore?
“What are you talking about, hmm?” Nayeon asked softly.
“I think I made Sana Unnie upset.” Nara confessed, crying again.
“Sana? Why?” Nayeon frowned.
“Promise you won’t be angry.” Nara pleaded.
“Nara… I promise.” Nayeon complied with hesitance.
“I told her you were no longer married and then she got upset.” Nara cried.
“Oh, sweetheart. It’s okay.” Nayeon comforted. “I’m sure she’s not mad at you. Do you want me to ask her for you?” She asked, earning a nod from Nara.
Tzuyu and Sana were staring at the two in concern, unsure of what was going on. Why was Nara crying? More so, Tzuyu was surprised that Sana was currently holding her hand very tightly. Where had that come from? Was Nayeon possibly right?
“Sana, are you upset with Nara?” Nayeon asked.
“Me? No of course not. What’s there to be upset about?” Sana countered, confused with the question.
“Really?” Nara sniffled.
“Yes cutie.” Sana chuckled.
“Pinkie promise?” She asked, offering her finger.
“Pinkie promise.” Sana replied, intertwining their little fingers.
“See, I told you sweetheart.” Nayeon teased, kissing Nara’s forehead. She bit back a smile as she noticed Tzuyu and Sana’s intertwined hands. Looking up to Tzuyu, she raised an eyebrow.
I told you so.
“Ma, I need to charge my book reader, do you think I can go to the power point there?” Nara asked, pointing to a nearby wall. Contemplating the distance, Nayeon agreed, occasionally looking over to check on her.
“What was that about?” Sana asked.
“Oh, I taught her that people who make others upset aren’t good people. She thought she made you upset and was crying because she believed she was a bad person.” Nayeon explained.
“She told me you were a divorcee?” Sana questioned.
“Ah, right. Yes I am.” Nayeon mumbled.
“So that’s what you meant earlier?” Tzuyu added.
“Yes… that’s it.” Nayeon nodded.
“Would you mind if I asked what happened?” Sana asked, eyes filled with concern.
“I suppose I can give an insight.” Nayeon muttered. “It all started in high school…”
