Soldier
Perturb“What’s the plan then?” Tzuyu asked as they continued walked around the airport.
“For now, we have to observe. See the patterns in their behaviour and what they’re doing.” Mina whispered.
“So we don’t have to attack or anything?” Tzuyu questioned.
“No, not yet.” Mina shook her head, pulling Tzuyu to a side corridor as she heard men walking nearby.
“Boss said we have to ensure no one else is in the building. It has to be them only.”
Tzuyu sent Mina a questioning glance but Mina put a finger to her lips, requesting silence for a few moments.
“I really don’t think anyone is here. Wouldn’t we have found out by now?”
“Look, the boss wants no witnesses and needs us to take the wife and the kid.”
“How do we even know that they’re still here? They could’ve left.”
“We still had the footage when we used the explosions. The two of them were in the bathroom last, it would be impossible for them to escape.”
“What about the drugs and weaponry?”
“There’s someone in charge of that already; focus on your goddamn job!”
The voices faded away and Mina frowned as they left, sighing heavily. For sure, there was a double plan for Havoc this time. What was she going to do about their safety? She had to stop them from catching Nayeon and Nara.
Nayeon…
It irked Mina how easily she’d given Nayeon a hint of her feelings earlier when they were leaving. But it bothered her more that Nayeon had accepted it all without rejecting it. They were so caught up in the moment; that was the most likely reason, wasn’t it? To seek comfort in the ones they cared about. It was a tiny bit awkward initiating it but when Nayeon had taken it in without a complaint, she didn’t regret it at all. Could she create hope for herself that Nayeon liked her, all these years later? She had gotten married and moved – maybe things were just this way because she sought a friend to rely on?
“Thinking about Nayeon?” Tzuyu chuckled, making Mina blush.
“W-what. Of course not.” Mina denied.
“Do you mind if I ask you what happened between the two of you?” Tzuyu asked.
“You realised? Or did Nayeon tell you?” Mina raised an eyebrow.
“She just told me you were the captain in high school.” Tzuyu answered.
“Well, it’s a long story.” Mina mumbled, taking a peek out of the corridor they were standing in. She pulled out her thermos-binoculars, focussing on the hidden wall behind them.
“We have time.” Tzuyu scoffed, crossing her arms.
“Why do you want to even know?” Mina sighed.
“Because I want to understand.” Tzuyu muttered.
“Understand what?” Mina said, noting down the figures she could see.
“Why everything happened.” Tzuyu responded.
“Alright, alright. I’ll explain it all.” Mina mumbled, pulling Tzuyu’s hand to take her deeper into the corridor. They couldn’t make any movements from where they were anyway.
“Nayeon and I were in the same classes from a very young age. We weren’t best friends, but we were really good friends. Growing up together had that effect. Most people were scared of me because they knew my dad was part of a secret operative company. Nayeon wasn’t one of those people. She was the only one who could really make me smile. She was different back then, carefree and a dork.” Mina started, shaking her head as she continued.
“When came to our senior years in high school, we had a mutual interest in each other. Though, to everyone it seemed one sided. That’s where things went wrong. Nayeon confessed to me countless times but I explained to her that the timing wasn’t right. It had been a few times; she’d wait for me after practice, hand me bottles of water or she’d sit with me at lunch or take me to my locker. I had to reject her every time. You see, back then, my dad was slowly introducing me to his work life and I had to avoid everything that wasn’t school or ‘work’ related. Then Nayeon’s ex came into the picture. They started to like me too and I got so worried. I didn’t want to hurt Nayeon, so I stopped coming to a lot of classes.”
“But then, I heard about their fights and their pranks and my worry increased for Nayeon. So I had one of my friends keep an eye on her when I couldn’t be at school. Nayeon was worried about my presence, of course, but I never tried to explain it. I had no time to. But when I heard that Nayeon was emotionally affected by everything, I finally showed my face. She actually slapped me a couple of times that day.” Mina chuckled. “As soon as I heard her explanation, I was infuriated that someone would hurt the one I cared about. I approached her ex and we got into a full blown fight. It was then when I figured out that they had access to illegal weaponry that my dad was talking about.”
Mina pulled up the back of her shirt and Tzuyu gasped at the sight of the scars scattered across her back. She was sure there were more present on the front than the back though.
“I was beaten, stabbed, clawed at and shot. I barely made it alive that day. I had cracked ribs, fractured fingers and a concussion as well. God, the bullet had just missed my heart by a mere inch. I still remember the look in the person’s eyes as I took hit after hit. I’d never seen someone with so much pent up rage and anger. It looked like they enjoyed the pain and that’s what scared me more. The whole liking me thing was a plan of theirs because at the end, Nayeon was the prize for them. And they’d succeeded worming themselves in Nayeon’s life. After the incident, I didn’t see Nayeon for months as I recovered. I talked to her on the phone, heard her cries as she complained about my absence. But that changed later to conversations about her new partner.” Mina sighed, wiping away the tears falling as she explained.
“Of course, I’d tried to warn Nayeon about it all but she was happy, really happy. I couldn’t force her to stay away since I could rarely get in touch with her when the two of them were officially a couple. At first, I thought it was just me that couldn’t get into touch with her but then I realised our other friends couldn’t either. I knew something was off; she wouldn’t just stop talking to us. Some time later, I managed to contact her and she told me she was already married and I didn’t know what to do. I was so worried about her and what she was doing but she was happy – I hadn’t seen her or heard her like that in such a long time.”
“I left school in my last year after the loss of my dad and remained in contact with Nayeon for a little while before I couldn’t do it anymore; I had no way of contacting her since my calls weren’t going through. I assumed she changed her number but later on, I dialled the same number with a different phone and it went through. I guess, the other number must have been blocked.” Mina explained.
“Wait, so what do you do? Have you replaced your father?” Tzuyu asked.
“I’m like my dad, yes, but I haven’t replaced him. I’m working my way up. He explained many things about Havoc and the fact that he’s been wanting to catch them for a while. Today is my chance, I guess.” Mina shrugged.
“So Nayeon knows nothing about you being injured?” Tzuyu realised.
“Yep. She knows nothing of her ex’s true past. She doesn’t know about the attack.” Mina nodded.
“Wow… you love her so much.” Tzuyu mumbled.
“W-what? No.” Mina shook her head.
“Are you seriously denying that you love her when you’ve gone through so much for her?” Tzuyu scoffed.
“Well…” Mina mumbled, scratching her head.
“I seriously hope you confess.” Tzuyu chuckled, patting Mina’s back.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m sure you took a while to confess to Sana, right?” Mina retorted.
“Maybe.” Tzuyu shrugged, biting back a smile.
“I hope those three are safe.” Mina whispered suddenly. Tzuyu hoped so too; she hoped they were all still in the room and not stupid enough to leave. She had an unsettling feeling that it wasn’t the case but sometimes unsettling feelings can be incorrect, of course.
Maybe this was not the unsettling feeling that was incorrect.
Nayeon walked in front of Nara and Sana as they sneakily walked around the airport. They couldn’t stay in that room any longer without nervousness eating at them.
“Hey Nayeon, mind explaining something.” Sana whispered.
“What is it?” Nayeon responded.
“What exists between you and Mina now?” Sana asked.
“Why are you asking?” Nayeon frowned.
“You haven’t met for ages yet you’re so comfortable with each other already. It’s as if you never left each other.” Sana pointed out.
“I don’t know, it was just our thing. We always use to be close. I didn’t even realise.” Nayeon frowned.
“You never moved on, huh?” Sana teased.
“Of course I did. I got married.” Nayeon said.
“You got married, but you thought you could replace Mina but you never did.” Sana shook her head.
“I don’t think so.” Nayeon denied.
“It’s okay. If it makes a difference, she likes you too.” Sana chuckled.
“W-what? How can you tell?” Nayeon stuttered.
“Oh god, you really can’t tell?” Sana groaned. “It’s obvious in the way she looks at you and treats you!”
“She cares about everyone?” Nayeon hesitated.
“Yeah, by caring if you mean crying when leaving you, kissing your head, making sure you’re not uncomfortable while you sleep and protecting you – sure.” Sana smirked as Nayeon blushed.
“Sure, sure. As if she would after she rejected me so many times.” Nayeon pouted.
“She might have had a reason. You never know.” Sana suggested.
“Oh, well. That’s that. I’m more glad that Tzuyu finally confessed.” Nayeon teased.
“You knew?” Sana gasped.
“Yes, that’s what we were talking about the entire time you were glaring at me.” Nayeon stifled a laugh.
“I wonder how long she’s kept it then.” Sana mumbled to herself.
“Five years.” Nayeon answered, clucking her tongue.
“What?!” Sana whispered harshly.
“Mhmm. She told me all about it.” Nayeon nodded.
“I don’t deserve her then.” Sana muttered.
“Don’t go thinking like that now; you can about it when you two meet. Now we just need to find them. Where are we even going?” Nayeon sighed.
“Aren’t those people there?” Sana pointed to a huddled group of people.
“What – oh – what?!” Nayeon looked on to where Sana was pointing.
What the hell was her ex doing here amongst those people?!
