The Road Taken

Emergency Doctors

It was almost like a fairytale dream. Something that you can only see in your sleep. The feeling of such happiness that you could only see from afar. That was what Yoo Hye Jung believed she was in. A fairytale dream. How is it possible that she can be this happy and content with life? How is it possible that she can smile and laugh this much? How is it possible that she never searched for this beautiful feeling sooner? Those questions were always roaming around in her mind nowadays. It's hard to say that she knew it was bound to happen. It's more like she never thought she was worthy enough for such happiness.

"Hye Jung-ah," she looked up from the beer bottle in her hand to see Hong Ji Hong standing by the television with two DVDs in his hand. "Which movie do you want to watch?"

She looks at the two options that she has. "Hm, anything is fine."

Ji Hong nodded his head before he puts in the movie into the DVD player. As soon as he was done, he grabbed his own beer bottle that he placed on the bookshelf earlier. "I hope you're up for a thriller." He took a seat next to Hye Jung, giving her one of his boyish charming smiles. When he noticed Hye Jung looking at him with those big eyes of hers, he chuckled softly. "What? Do I have something on my face? I swear I cleaned my face after we ate."

Hye Jung laughed, shaking her head. "It's nothing like that." She stares at his hand next to her for a few seconds before grabbing it, interlocking their hands together. "I'm just happy."

"About?"

Hye Jung looked at the ring around his finger and then at her own ring. "About everything."

Ji Hong gave her a curious expression before smiling once again. "Sometimes I think it's easy to make you happy and then it's hard to." He moves closer to her, kissing the right side of her temple. "I'm just glad that I can make you happy so much lately."

"Thank you..." she muttered softly before closing her eyes and leaning her head onto his shoulder. "Thank you for everything."

. . .

Hye Jung made her way out of the fellow's office and across the hallway of the hospital. All she has left for the day is a run check up around the ICU, it's been a long day. Not only did she have to assist in three different surgeries but she had to endure most patients from the ER. "Doctor Yoo!" Hye Jung halted her footsteps and turn to see one of the nurses rushing towards her. "We have a problem!"

Her eyes widened. "What is it?"

The nurse shake her head as she was out of breath. "Just follow me! Too long to explain and time is short!" Seeing that it must really be an emergency, Hye Jung started rushing like the nurse. Patient names and status start running through her brain, trying to figure out which of her patient it is. "Come on, Doctor Yoo!"

Hye Jung paused her steps whens she realized that she was in front of the auditorm conference rooms. Confused, she just continued staring at the nurse. "What is this?" The nurse didn't say any other words besides going ahead and opening the door. Once the doors opened, her eyes widened with beam and surprise. Balloons, banners, streaers were practically covered the huge auditorm. "What..." She laughed when she saw Soon Hee standing on the stage with her hands pointing toward all the food on the table. "What is this?"

"Congratulations!" Soon Hee screamed. Hye Jung jumped in surprise when the other doctors, interns, and nurses appeared from behind the chairs. "Congraulations on your engagement Hye Jung and....." Soon Hee stopped talking when she noticed Hong Ji Hong missing from the surprise party. "Where's Teacher Hong?"

Jin Seo Woo looked around. "Didn't you gather Doctor Hong too?" she asked towards the nurse, who was responsible on getting both Ji Hong and Hye Jung to the celebration room.

The nurse could only manage to smile. "I couldn't find him."

Hye Jung laughed. "It's okay. This...this is really too much."

Soon Hee looked at her best friend and made a face. "Don't act like you don't love it. You know you do."

"Is it obvious?" Hye Jung gave in while smiling.

Jung Yoon Do crossed his arms while looking around the room. "Who's going to clean this up later?"

"You." Soon Hee, Seo Woo and Hye Jung expressed at the same.

Yoon Do gasped. "Oh. Now that you're all back to being best friends, you're going to team up against me like this." Yoon Do looked over at Hye Jung. "Are you really going to be like this? I'm even here to celebrate your engagement. Aren't you being too much?"

Seo Woo rolled her eyes and softly hit him on the arm. "How long are you going to try to make her feel guilty for? It's getting too old."

"She knows I'm joking." Yoon Do tried to defend himself.

"What is the big emergency that.." Ji Hong stopped at the entrance and looked around. Laughter soon filled the big room as he realized what it was for. "Ah, I'm so embrassed." He chuckled while placing both his on the sides of his neck. "This really wasn't needed." He stood next to Hye Jung and shrugged his shoulders cutely. "Did you know about this?"

Hye Jung shook her head. "I think Soon Hee set this all up with the neurology team."

Soon Hee smiled. "Isn't it cute?"

"As long as I don't clean this up, it's cute." Ji Hong joked around. "Thanks for doing this." He looked at every single on in the room. "It means alot to have your support on this."

Yoon Do took a piece of cake. "As long as you don't ask for a big amount of money for your wedding, you'll get my support 100%."

"That's not fair! You're rich!" Ji Hong expressed before jumping onto the stage, helping Hye Jung up.

"Doctor Hong! You're rich too!" Yoon Do groaned loudly.

Ji Hong took some cake and cookies onto his plate, sharing a cookie with Hye Jung. "Would you want me coming over your house every night like the beagles or?"

Yoon Do choked on the piece of cake in his mouth before inhaling some water. "Why are you and the beagles like this? Do you find some amusement on making me suffer?"

Laughing as she finished the cookie in , she gave Yoon Do a sympathic look. "I feel so bad for you."

"I should say that to you. You're about to marry one of the beagles." Yoon Do replied with a smirk. "Ah, that feels nice to know."

Seo Woo laughed. "Aren't you releated with Uncle Pa Ran? So you're stuck for life like how Hye Jung is with Doctor Hong."

The realization hit Yoon Do and he groaned out loud again before stuffing his mouth with more baked goods.

Hye Jung looked over at Seo Woo. "Thanks for helping with this."

"It's nothing. We're friends, aren't we?" Seo Woo smiled back. It feels honestly good to say that. For thirteen years, she lived with such grudge and hate toward Hye Jung. She thought it was the right thing to do. To just hate her. Now she realizes that it was all wrong. To be able to be friends with Soon Hee and Hye Jung, it brings back old memories on how everything was in high school before all the drama. It's only been a week since everything in the hospital has simmered down. With Chief Kim being Director Kim now, the hospital seems to be back to order. Her dad is still slowly recovering and her family has decided to go on a trip next month. She still doesn't know if she's able to be with her family when the time comes but she's just glad - glad that everything seems to be going the way it's supposed to be. "No, really. Who's going to clean this all up?"

The question brought everyone into laughter as they all look around for someone to hold responsible.

. . .

"Are you happy?" Soon Hee asked as she sat down on the couch, putting her feet over Hye Jung's legs. "Are you that happy?"

Hye Jung smiled as she held her hand against the light to see the ring better. "I never thought that I would be this happy over a ring."

"Of course you have to feel this happy over a ring." Soon Hee looked at her best friend. "It means you really love Teacher Hong." Giving her best friend a small friendly push. "And you said you don't have any desire to marry. Look at you! You're engaged!"

Hye Jung giggled. "I don't know. I never thought about it." She stared at the ring around her finger as she twist and turns it. "But with Teacher Hong....everything just feels right." She turns to look at Soon Hee. "As if I was meant to marry him."

Soon Hee smiled widely. "Like I said, I have to clap my hands for him. He has made you so happy and that makes me happy. I love that."

"I wouldn't be happy at all if it weren't for you always being by my side. You've done a big part too, Soon Hee." Hye Jung explained. "He just gathered all the other remaining pieces."

Soon Hee nodded her head. "And he's going to continue on grabbing the pieces until your heart is back into a whole. He makes you happy. You make him happy. Everything is going to be so great for you two."

. . .

Jung Pa Ran and Joo In Joo stared at their bestfriend as he continues to twist and turn that ring for the past five minutes. "Ya! It's been five minutes!" Pa Ran screamed while taking a drink from his beer. "Hong Ji Hong, you give me goosebumps."

Ji Hong rolled his eyes as he crossed his arms. "Can't you two be happy for me?"

In Joo gave him a glare. "Why would we be happy for you? You didn't bother on sharing that you're about to propose to her. And to find out about it a week later?"

"That's not fair. You were on break from the hospital." Ji Hong defended himself.

"What about me? I was alive and well, working from across the hospital from you! Why didn't you tell me?" Pa Ran asked.

Ji Hong looked at the both of them. "If I were to tell you two, what would you say?" He suddenly sat up from his seat. "Ah, marriage. Remember that? The happiness once it starts. The sorrow once tiredness kicks in. The feeling towards divorce once you hit the one month mark." he said in their tone of voice. "Would you really congraulate me if I said I was going to propose?"

Pa Ran and In Joo both looked at each other. "No."

"See? You two aren't exactly the ideal type to ask about marriage." Ji Hong added.

In Joo sighed. "But still....take care of her. She's precious."

"Hold onto her before my nephew comes in and snatches her away!" Pa Ran joked.

Ji Hong threw a bottle cap toward Pa Ran. "Very funny."

"She's a good catch, don't let her go."

"Ah, stop!" Ji Hong held up both his arms as surrender. "Don't worry about it."

All three best friends looka at each other before bursting out in laughter and clicking their beer bottles together.

. . .

"Doctor Yoo..." Yoon Do took a seat next to her in the cafeteria. "Did you hear about Choi Kang Soo?"

Hye Jung smiled. "Yeah. His webtoon is really turning out into more of a hit than we thought."

"Don't you think they're going to want to interview you again for it? Maybe Doctor Hong this time too since he's in the new recent edition alot." Yoon Doo said while stuffing his mouth with food. He has surgery in an hour, he hasn't even prepped for it yet.

"I don't know. It depends if Teacher Hong wants to do it or if the media is even interested."

Yoon Do paused the spoon mid air. "Teacher Hong?"

Hye Jung stopped eating and looked at him. "Yeah? Teacher Hong. What's wrong with it?"

He puts down the spoon onto the food tray with a serious expression on. "Don't you think you should advance from that?"

"Advance? From what?"

Yoon Do suddenly remembered something. "Ah, I forgot. You don't know anything about love." He couldn't help but hide a smile from his face. "Have you called Doctor Hong Ji Hong anything else besides Teacher Hong or Doctor Hong?" Hye Jung shook her head as a response. "Aigoo."

"Why?"

"Oppa? You never used that term before?"

Goosebumps covered her whole arm. "That's so cheesy. He and I aren't like that."

Yoon Do couldn't help but laugh. "Not cheesy? Doctor Hong is as cheesy as the stick of cheese that hasn't been grated yet!" Hye Jung burst out laughing before covering her face. "A man loves being called 'Oppa'. I don't know what it is but men just love it."

"Oppa?" Hye Jung repeated. The word just doesn't sound right to her. "It's okay. He doesn't mind."

"I bet you have him as Teacher Hong on your phone, don't you?" Yoon Do asked while picking his spoon back up to eat.

"No." Hye Jung answered. It's 'Hong Hong Hong'."

Yoon Do dropped the spoon and looked at Hye Jung in disbelief. "Ah, lost my appetite. So cheesy."

. . .

Hye Jung sat on top of the kitchen counter as she watched Ji Hong wash the dishes after their dinner. "When we're married, would you want me to wash those?"

"No." Ji Hong simply said. "I mean, whoever cooks just wash the dish. It doesn't matter who washes the dishes."

"Really? What about dinner?"

Ji Hong laughed and turned around briefly to look at her. "What's with the twenty questions? No. Considering that we're both doctors, sometimes we're going to be so busy. Not being able to have a nice home cooked meal will but it can't be help."

"We don't have to do all the normal wedding tradition?"

"What is this wedding tradition?"

"Honeymoon."

Ji Hong almost dropped the plate in his hand onto the ground once the words honeymoon left . "Uh, I don't know."

"Okay."

"Okay? What does that mean?" Ji Hong asked.

Hye Jung shrugged her shoulders. "As in....okay?" She laughed when he turned around to give her a long stare. "What? Did I say something?"

"Ah, you really know how to mess with a man's heart." Ji Hong expressed as he finish the last few dishes.

Silence filled the kitchen as she watches him do the dishes. The way his eyebrows knit together when he's concentrated. The way his forehead is shining from the sweat sliding down his face. Her eyes adverted over to his hands, the veins from his hands. Hye Jung blinks her eyes a few times to concentrate on what she was about to do next. "Teacher Hong.." she said softly while she watched him dry his hands with a towel.

"Hmm?" Ji Hong said. He turned around and leaned against the sink, standing across from her as she was sitt on the kitchen counter. "What is it?"

Hye Jung mustered up enough courage in her. "Oppa...."

The sudden new term surprised Ji Hong. He stood up straight and looked at her. "What?"

"Oppa?" Hye Jung whined as she tried to shake the goosebumps off her. "Ah, it doesn't sound right. It sounds weird, doesn't it? I'm sorry. It's just that Doctor Jung and I were having lunch and - " suddenly her lips were engulfed by Ji Hong's own lips. A smile spread across her lips as she slowly start to kiss him back. After a few seconds, they both pulled away and smiled at each other. "Why'd you do it?"

"...Just because?" Ji Hong said. The both of them stared at each other before laughing at the normal response that they usually say to each other nowadays. Ji Hong placed his hand on the side of Hye Jung's face, caressing it with his thumb as he kissed her forehead. "I love you, Hye Jung-ah."

She softly smiled as she wrapped her arms around his neck, placing her head onto his shoulder as she rest her eyes. "I love you too."

. . .

Seo Woo stood by the door as she handed coffee over to Young Gook. "Want to have dinner tonight?"

Young Gook took a sip of his coffee. "Shouldn't I be the one to ask you out on a date?"

"You took too long."

He could only manage to chuckle before nodding his head to the date. "I'll wait for you in the fellow room."

Seo Woo smiled softly. "Okay." It feels weird to be in a relationship with someone you've known for so long but with Young Gook, it feels right. Her eyes adverted over to Hye Jung walking over. "Where are you going?"

"Fellow room. I'm on break." Hye Jung greeted Young Gook before walking ahead of them.

"Don't you think sometimes that she's almost like Doctor Hong?"

"What do you mean?" Seo Woo asked.

Young Gook shrugged. "If it weren't because we're in the same team, you wouldn't think that those two are dating."

Seo Woo smiled. "I think anyone could tell that those two share a special connection. It's inevitable to ignore, trust me."

. . .

"Send him to the ICU and tell General Surgery that we'll take over as soon as they finish their part in the surgery." Ji Hong told one of the interns. As each and every patient from the ER were being checked if they need anyone from Neurology Department to come and help, Ji Hong can already sense the headache that the hospital will be getting. It's been three hours of nonstop incoming patients. He doesn't know what it exactly is about this day but it's just plain crazy.

"Doctor Hong!" Kang Kyung Joon rushed over. "We have a patient that might need surgery immediately!"

"Might?" Ji Hong repeated before rushing over to the patient. "Don't ever use the word might. Always make sure that you're positive about the pateitn before you hand off them off to a doctor. Understood?"

Kyung Joon nodded his head. "Yes."

After checking on the patient, Ji Hong bit his lip as he took a look on his watch. He has another surgery in a couple minutes. "Hand off the patient to Doctor Jung. Tell him I'll take care of the other matters after he does the surgery." Before he could give Kyung Joon time to ask questions, Ji Hong rushed off to the operation room.

. . .

"Doctor Yoo!"

"Doctor Jung!"

Doctor Jin!"

Seo Woo, Yoon Do, and Hye Jung stood in the middle of the ER - all three exhausted and simply numb for it all. There has been over five different accidents in Seoul. Seven of the fifteen patients that came in needed surgery right away. They all did what they could do in a short amount of time. It's almost past midnight now. It seems like the ER hasn't died down from the chaos just yet. All three of them spread to three different places - where they heard their names being called.

Life as a doctor isn't easy. Whether you like it or not, it takes part of your life. Planned dinners gets cancelled within minutes. Planned holidays sometimes gets ended aburptly because of the short handed team that the hospital has. Being a doctor can be a privilege but it can also be tiring. No matter how much they complain, the can never complain as much as the patient. They are the ones that are actually going through the pain and life or death situations. So complaining or giving excuses is never a reaon to use. Whether they like it or not, being a doctor - being someone who is responsible for another's person life is a huge deal. Life as a doctor isn't a joke.

Hye Jung exhaled deeply when she finished her last patient of the day, taking off her doctor's gown and hanging it on the coat rack. Clenching onto both sides of her neck, she closed her eyes for a brief second. Before she knew it, the brief second turned into almost two hours.

Ji Hong walks into the fellow room, smiling as he saw Hye Jung peacefully asleep. Walking over, he carefully placed his own jacket on top of her so she wouldn't be cold. Looking around the fellow room, he decided to lay down on the couch that they have. As he watches Hye Jung sleep, he smiles to himself. Someone as beautiful as she is can be even more beautiful while they're sleeping. It's almost astonishing to see. And this beautiful person is in love with him. The thought gave him an immediate smile across his face. Closing his eyes, he cleared his throat as he slowly let sleep drift over.

. . .

Hye Jung opens her eyes and yawned. Her eyes widened when she realized that it's almost six in the morning. Just as she was about to get up and go home to shower and change, her eyes adverted over to Ji Hong, sleeping on the couch. A smile spread across her face as she made her way over. Sitting on top of the coffee table, she watched as he slept. Biting her lip, she whispered as she leaned closer to his face. "Oppa...." Goosebumps spread across her body. Ah, she really can't do this. It's just too cheesy for her right now.

"Hye Jung-ah," she stopped and looked at Ji Hong, who was still sleeping. He's probably sleep talking right now. "Thank you loving me....." Hye Jung smiles brightly as she continues to listen. "Thank you for wanting to marry me."

She gives him a kiss on the forehead. "Thank you for wanting to marry me too."

Hye Jung knows that this is just the beginning of their new chapter together. The road that they're about to take may have a few bumps here and there but if they're strong enough, they can manage it. The beginning of each chapter is rough. She just hopes that theirs won't be too rough. They both have been through diferent pain and loss in their lives. This road....it's as scary as any other road. Hye Jung smiles as she watched Ji Hong stir in his sleep - but it has to be a road taken for the both of them, for their future.

Chapter 20: Beautiful story! I was a hardcore RaeShin's fan back then. I had watched the drama countless time and this is my second time reading your fanfics. Chapter 20: i'm bawling right now and i just want to say this: thank you so much for writing this story. it's been so long since i've been engrossed in a fanfic. this sense of escapism was a great ride, and i loved every bit of it--the ups and downs of everything. i started reading it a few days ago, and i don't have any regrets. i cried really hard in so many parts, and i just can't even with this story.
in all honesty, i would give anything for this to be the actual season 2 (if there ever be one) or at least the plot. this was a really great adventure to go through, and i will forever be thankful to you for writing this. i cannot wait to finish Nightfall with you--i'm absolutely thrilled to know that i will be "growing up" (for lack of a better term) with the story. thank you so much, dear, and i hope you have a great day~

Chapter 20: This was a perfect ending to be honest, it makes me feel like there should be more after this, but the ending of how they'll always be together with their perfect little family was so cute. You tied up everything perfectly, and also JiHong's words to Yoondo were really sincere and touching. It's like everything the viewers wanted plus what should've happen in the drama.

Thank you for creating this story and helping the majority of us fans with our withdrawal symptoms haha. I felt like this story and the drama itself is complete now, so it's easier to let go. I'm looking forward to "Nightfall" because of how different it will be! Also I really enjoy your instagram!
