Cycling and Falling

Ouch, Math!

One of the nonsense that old retired educators taught at the Teachers' Academy was that teachers actually learn a lot more from their students than their students do from them. Sunggyu thought it was utter nonsense, unless by 'learning from students' they meant torture techniques. His first two months with 3D-1 simply confirmed his suspicions, especially since he had to teach them what seemed like three years of Mathematics all at once to compensate for their horrendous foundation. The only things the class was better at than him were failing to turn up for school, breaking school rules by finding an alternate job, and finding excuses.    Yet here he was, holding the handles of his new bicycle hesitantly as he struggled to balance his way down the path. He was steering left and right uncertainly and braking way too often to prevent himself from actually falling. His younger coach Nam Woohyun was following closely behind with a disapproving look as he observed his trembling homeroom teacher. "If you are trying to use your cycling to increase your social interactions in the staffroom, I suggest you just quit your job, or usurp old Junyeop's principal position and stick to your car."    Sunggyu stopped in his tracks for the umpteenth time and turned back to glare at his student coach. He knew his 30 minutes of coaching for the day was up because that was the only time when Woohyun would be willing to speak to him at all. The boy usually just set up the gears and guided his movements silently. "At least I managed to stay upright today and moved like...what? 50 metres? It's better than you still not figuring out what's the difference between sine and cosine." The elder reached into his pocket to take out 10,000 Won for the impatient kid. He felt like he was being extorted of the money, given the poor quality of teaching and the slow unimpressive progress. Despite that, he passed Woohyun the crumpled note. He was that desperate to get closer to his colleagues, and avoid morning bus crowds. It had been two weeks of training, and Sunggyu was close to the point of admitting that his limbs were just uncoordinated.    Perks of being a math genius.    "You should try falling, even just once.  Then you will know how to avoid it." Woohyun left these words as he grabbed the bike and headed back towards his stall, ready to prepare for evening business. Sunggyu was, for the sixth time in a row, left to trudge the full 20 minutes back to said destination. He wasn't surprised to see Howon and Janelle clad in aprons, already setting up the stall for Woohyun. The owner himself was trying to take over the tasks. It was the 8th time Sunggyu had seen the duo volunteering at the stall over the past two weeks, and he could imagine the frequency would only increase from now on. Woohyun had never stopped rejecting their help, just as he had never stopped asking Sunggyu to pay for coaching fees. It was nice to have friends, but there is a limit as to how much of one's life burdens should be shared.    Burdens are perhaps better taken alone.    Sunggyu parked himself in his designated seat at the corner of the stall where Myungsoo and Sungjong were always seated. They greeted Sunggyu readily and quickly prepared for the evening class. Sunggyu had been providing extra homework guidance to the two children so that Woohyun could stop toggling between cooking and them. He had once asked if Woohyun should be paying him instead, but the boy said, "Cycling course came at a discount, so that should write it off." What a brat. The teacher never particularly cared to be honest. He wasn't allowed an external job in the first place. So this was a little game he signed up for. A little game like teasing. A little game of psychology, when you slowly introduce something bit by bit, so that when the full blown version comes by, you might say, "hey, I can take that!" Like vaccination, or rollercoasters. Or high school math homework. Sunggyu knew he had Sungjong and Myungsoo on his side. On nights when Woohyun resisted his homework, Sungjong would boycott his own to force his brother back to his work; on nights he tried to kick out Howon and Janelle, Myungsoo would feign a stomache upset so that the duo could take over while his brother took care of him, and Woohyun would have no choice but to thank them. A little game, with the best players on his side. He could win this. He could win this...   Another busy night ended with the siblings finishing their homework and the highschoolers ending their job. Woohyun finished an entire worksheet on top of that. Sunggyu mentally tabbed the score in his head: Woohyun 1, Sunggyu+Team 9. He could not suppress a smile as he helped Howon and Woohyun with moving the heavy equipment and ingredients to the back of the stall, something that he detested doing usually. He tried giving Howon an appreciative pat and wink to indicate that their plan was working, but the latter was more disturbed by Sunggyu's randomly satisfied smiles than to share those feelings. The three worked quietly in the stuffy store at the back, leaving Janelle and the kids to pack up the front.    A loud disturbance punctuated the silence in the shop. The three men looked up simultaneously, staring at one another as if to find some sort of sign that the other two heard it too: furniture breaking. Woohyun was the first to act when he figured what the sounds were. He dashed out of the store, his buddy and his teacher following behind him, to see Janelle crouching over the two crying children, protecting them from three burly men. One of them had somehow broke a chair and from the looks of it, he had flung it across the place and it narrowly missed the girl. Janelle closed her arms around the boys even tighter, blocking them from another blow that landed on her back instead. Another man was advancing to grab Janelle's hair as he demanded for the owner, although he eventually laid his hands on Sungjong with a slap across the boy's cheek, leaving a bright red mark on his pale face.    The sight made Woohyu wild. He launched himself towards the man and sent a chair right into his stomach. "Don't you touch him." Howon moved forward to back him up as another of the thugs rounded up on him, and the two school boys were fighting savagely.    The last man was unmoving as he laid a paper on the table, lighting a cigarette in his mouth and declared, "Quite a debt you have with us, kiddo. Get out of this stall by Tuesday or else."    The two boys were still fighting to drive the men away from the quivering children.    Sunggyu looked at his students; one fighting in his uniform, one chased by debtors and desperately protecting his brother, and another hurt but resolute in her embrace.    Question: If you suddenly have a new problem that looks oddly familiar, and is undoing all the new progress of the work you have done so far, and is also making you extremely pained, what do you do? a) Try out a new method! b) Try the good old way.   Sunggyu pulled Howon and Woohyun out of the way as he replaced them in the fight. The boys were initially frustrated by the intervention, but were soon taken over by surprise as they watched their Math teacher swiftly rounding his tie around one of the men's neck so that he was held into position as Sunggyu drove his knees up his belly continuously. The other man tried to approach him from behind but he whipped the tie into his face in one quick motion, stopping him in his tracks and giving Sunggyu an opening to turn around and kick him in the nuts, finishing off with a headbutt. The teacher singlehandedly brought do

I LOVE MATHS AND I LOVED THIS STORY!!

This was something really different and interesting. 8 liked your references of maths' equations and all. And Hoya's proposal was my favourite. Only he can pull off such a stunt lol. Oh yeah my guess was right about that boy from that restaurant being Woohyun :D
Since I enjoyed this a lot, I'll definitelt checkout your other stories. I think I'm already reading Stupid Cupid. (P.S hope you'll update soon ;-) )
