• APPEARANCE: After her parents died, Tian got a tattoo of a pair of birds in honour of their memory (since the last part of her name means "feather"). Tian also went through a rebellious phase when she was 16 after her parents died & got many piercings. She has 5 on her left ear but only two on her right ear. She thought that Woollim would force her to take them out but was surprised when they said that it made her look unique, like Tao & Kris (formerly) of EXO.
  STYLE: While out and about, Tian has a sophisticated and simple style, but while she's around other trainees or her groupmates, she likes to dress-down in baggy t-shirts and jogging pants. Tian doesn't particularly like dresses becaue they make her seem taller and she figures that love interests prefer a shorter, cute type of girl. On the outside, Tian seems like the perfect lady - someone that would be suited to be a model - she's patient, ambitious, & loyal but her most dominant trait is the fact that she's ambitious. Tian's mother taught her that she must always be the best & live up to other people's expectations. This has taught Tian to be patient for results, but has also made her competitive, critial, self-concious, & obsessive. She will work hard for results & be exra hard on herself until she gets the outcome that she desires. As a child, it was difficult for her to accept a loss, but after her parents died, some of her drive to be the best calmed down a little. BACKGROUND: Tian grew up as Song Li Yu in Shaoxing, China. You could describe her face as "a face only a mother could love". Tian didn't have a disfigured face as a child, it's just that she wasn't as pretty as the other girls. As a child in elementary & middle school, she was bullied for being an "ugly duckling". Though Tian's family wasn't poor, they weren't rich enough to give Tian what she wanted - cosmetic surgery to make her "pretty". Tian was always excluded & didn't have friends while she lived in China.

When Tian was 16, she and her family went on a road trip to Hangzhou since it is a city nearby & there is a saying - "in the sky there is heaven, on earth there is Hangzhou". Everything was going perfectly - Tian always loved road trips because it meant she could escape the taunting of her cruel classmates. Unfortunately, this trip would end in tragedy. It was a particularly rainy night that they were driving & when the car hydoplaned, the Song family's car flipped, rolling many times. Both of Tian's parents died in the crash but Tian barely survived. Tian was rushed into surgery with a broken body & her face seriously disformed from the glass that had scratched & fractured parts of her face. After many hours of surgery, the doctors were able to save her life. As as result, the doctors had also restructured her face. Once the bandages came off months later & Tian was discharged, she looked like a completely different person. She was actually pretty? She had lost weight from only eating hospital food for months with little movement & now she had a pretty face as well.

Tian didn't have any living relatives in China once her parents had died so she was sent to live with her mother's sister in South Korea. At first, there were a lot of issues - Tian needed grief & PTSD counselling to deal with the passing of her parents & then there was the language barrier. Because Tian's mother was Korean, Tian had basic knowledge of the Korean language, but she had to work hard to become fluent in Korean.
 

TRAINEE LIFE: Signed to Woollim Entertainment as a model in 2011, began training for a girlgroup in 2014; 6 years total
In 2011, Solar & Tian were shopping in Seoul together. At one of the stores, Solar was asked to sing in order to receive a free gift. At first she was reluctant, but she decided to give in - she was an amazing singer after all. After she had sung, the girls were approached by 2 scouting agents. At first, the girls ran from the men - they thought they were creepers. Once the two girls lost their breath, however, the two men caught up & explained that they were scouts; one from WA Entertainment & one from Woollim Entertainment. Solar was asked to join WA Entertainment as singer & Tian was asked to join Woollim as a model. Both girls each went to audition & were accepted into their respective companies. Upon entering the company, Tian officially changed her legal name to Choi Yoo-ah & her stage name to Tian because she is afraid that her former classmates will somehow recognize her & post photos of her before she became "pretty", ruining her new life.

For 3 years, Tian did modelling for Woollim & appeared as a love interest in a few music videos but she wasn't the best. She also finished her bachelor's degree in computer science which she finished in memory of her father who really had wanted his little girl to go to university. Tian's mother had forced her daughter into many activites as a young child, telling her that no matter what she was doing, she always had to be the best because no one would notice her otherwise (implying that it's because she's ugly). This instilled a competitive spirit in Tian - she can't control her need to be the best. After Solar debuted in Mamamoo, Tian decided that she wanted to train to become an idol as well to boost her popularity & auditioned for the trainee program. She was accepted & put into the trainee program. The program was harder than Tian had imagined. As a model, Tian was used to the crazy diets, but she was not used to the workouts & late practices that the trainee program also demanded. Many times, Tian cried & called her cousin when things got hard. Her cousin always told her the same thing, "it'll all be worth it" & would sing her to sleep.

In 2017, after the departure of Tina, Woollim approached many of the female trainees, looking for a potential new member for 4xU. Tian, having been in the trainee program for 3 years became a contestant. Finally, after much scrutiny from the higher-ups, as well as interviews from the current members of 4xU, Tian was chosen & tries to get used to finally being in the limelight, hoping to make her parents proud.

FAMILY:

Mi Kyung tried to hide the fact that she was disappointed that her daughter was born with an ugly face. To try to combat this, she enrolled her daughter in many different activites to make her skills & (unsuccessfully) her body more attractive because her face wasn't. Tian's mother always told her to be the best. Tian wasn't as close to her mother, but she still remembers her fondly.
Kim Yongsun (Solar) / cousin / 26 / idol - MAMAMOO / understanding, exciteable, perfectionist / alive / Solar & Tian were really close in age & had a similar interest in music - rap. Solar always supported Tian through her episodes following the accident. She is the one that always called Tian "Yoo-ah" & is her best friend. When Tian enters Woollim's trainee program, she tells Solar that she doesn't want people to know they're cousins so that people don't ask about Solar's family or Tian's parents.

The other members of 4xU call her "dad" and she really is like a dad to the girls with her compassion, dad jokes, and protectiveness. Tian thought that Sang Mi was really mature when she allowed GiGi to take her place as the group leader the first time they debuted.
Jung Soojin / casual friend / 25 / idol - 4xU / motherly, blunt, self-concious / alive / Tian has mixed feelings about JJ. Somtimes, Tian thinks that JJ seems so fake & overrated. She understands that she's been a trainee for 14 years, but what's the big deal about her? Tian feels like it's a little unfair that JJ already has a large reputation as a "Jung sister" with many idol connections. Other times, Tian feels bad for thinking those things about JJ - she's worked just as hard as the rest of them.
Chaichareon Kraiputra / rolemodel / 24 / idol - 4xU / outgoing, affectionate, sassy / alive / Tian remembers when Faerietale first debuted & she thought that Chase was just the coolest person that she'd ever seen on television. She was charismatic, fun, and confident - everything that Tian wanted to be. It also gave Tian some pride to see a foreigner making their debut in South Korea where it's a fairly homogenous society. Without trying to be a copycat - Tian sometimes tries to mimick Chase's actions, hoping that she can be a better idol like Chase.
Chan Xingyi / confidante / 22 / idol - 4xU / easy-going, vulgar, prideful / alive / After having lived in South Korea for 10 years, it's understandable that Tian would miss China, but she never had anyone to talk to until she met Venus. In public, Tian tries her best to appear to be the perfect idol, but in the dorms, Venus and Tian can be as vulgar & honest as they want because they know that no one but them can understand. Since Venus lost her sister, Tian feels comfortable talking to her about how she lost her parents.
Zhang Suchin / manager / 33 / manager - 4xU / loyal, caring, strict (but fair) / alive / Trainees don't have managers, so Tian doesn't know Suchin very well, but she thinks that she's an amazing person. She doesn't feel as close to Suchin as she does to Venus because of their age, but it eases Tian's stress to speak to someone in her native language.

When she gets like this, the only one who can help her is Solar, since she was there for most of Tian's healing-process.

LOVE INTEREST: Cheon Sang Mi

RELATIONSHIP: It wasn't even 1 year after Tian had come to South Korea that Faerietale made their debut in 2008. At first, Tian wasn't really in to kpop, but her cousin Solar was & she convinced her cousin to start listening to it to help her with learning Korean. Since she was trying to be more rhythmic, Tian found herself listening to rap more in order to speak more fluidly & found herself really liking Sang Mi's voice. Slowly, Tian became a fan of her, liking what few appearances she & Faerietale had on music & variety shows.
In 2009, Faerietale broke up & Tian was heartbroken - she hadn't once been able to meet her idols due to so few appearances on music shows. Despite this, Tian had written many fan letters to Faerietale (most addressed mainly to Sang Mi) encouraging them, using her name of the time "Song Li Yu".
When Tian is chosen for 4xU, Tian is extremely shy around Sang Mi & is usually very quiet. Sometimes, she likes to show off in front of her to try to show her her talents. Since Tian has never liked a girl before, she doesn't know how to flirt; she only knows how guys will flirt & she doesn't know that Sang Mi is biual. Because of all this, Tian tries to do things to look after Sang Mi, but gets embarrassed, so she will try to take care of all of 4xU (like getting everyone snacks & water bottles or making sure that their appearance is perfect). Most of the time, she just tries to get flirting advice from Chase since she has so many guy friends (key word is "tries" since Chase trolls her more often than not).
After about a year (give or take a few months), Tian finally works up the courage to confess to Sang Mi but sadly, Sang Mi doesn't feel the same - stating that she already has feelings for someone else. Tian is a little sad that it didn't work out, but smiles & tells Sang Mi that she hopes they can be good friends. Sang Mi agrees & the pair become closer. It's only a little later that Sang Mi reveals to Tian that she likes Solar from Mamamoo. At this point, none of the girls know that Solar is Tian's cousin, but says that she's friends with Solar & can be her wing-woman.

People make suggestions like, "Suga from BTS because he's friends with Chase or BamBam from GOT7 because he's also close with Chase... why is Chase friends with so many rappers?" or "Ravi from VIXX since VIXX & 4xU are close" or "4xU's labelmate, Dongwoo" or "one of the rappers from Clara's brother's group, Seventeen - plenty to choose from there". Tian thinks for a moment but then says that she'd like to try singing in another language to reach out to international fans, so BamBam & Vernon would be good choices, but she laughs & says that they're so young - Vernon is only 19, while BamBam is only a year older at 20. Her idols from before she joined Woollim were 2PM, EXO, Super Junior, TVXQ, SS501, Big Bang, CNBLUE, Infinite & Teen Top. Jay Park, who has been a recent fan of this new girlgroup sees the interview & thinks that it would be a good move to collaborate with Tian to catch the eye of some more kpop lovers, as opposed to his usual demographics; khip-hop lovers (it's totally not because he thinks she's cute or anything, nope, lol).
After a couple weeks, Woollim presents the offer to Tian & she tells them that she'll think about it. At first, she doesn't want to accept - that boy is covered in more tattoos than he can count & there was that whole issue about getting kicked out of 2PM & then his style is... sometimes more vulgar than she thinks her fans will like. Despite all of this, Tian realizes that this would be a good opportunity to gain more diverse fans & since he grew up in the US, they could do an English song.
The two spend a lot of time together practicing for this collaboration but they keep each other at a professional distance since both of them are wary of what happened to Tina. One night after a practice session at AOMG, it's raining hard with lightning & high winds. Tian insists that she needs to go back to the dorms because the next day 4xU has a music/variety show & needs to be up early to go to the venue with the rest of the group. When she calls Su Chin, everyone is tied up & traffic is bad because the storm has caused many road-blocks. Jay says that he'll drive her back, but 2 minutes into the drive, Tian starts to cry because it's bringing back bad memories from the accident. Jay realizes that she won't be able to make the rest of the 8 minute trip, so opts to bring them back to AOMG where he calls Su Chin & tells her the situation. He then sits Tian down & tries to comfort her; he hugs her & sings to her, just like Solar would do. They end up falling asleep in a practice room. The pair are woken up the next morning by Hoodie who tells them that there is car outside waiting for Tian. The 2 embarrassedly, say goodbye & depart.
After this, the pair actually become close. Against their better judgement, they secretly fall for each other. Tian is beating herself up on the inside because after what happened to Tina, she knows that she shouldn't become involved with Jay, not only that, but she knows how her mother would feel about Jay with his tattoos, nose piercing, & sometimes vulgar language. Despite all of this, she really falls for how rebellious, ambitious, & understanding he is.
