YOU.

FASHION.

  • FACECLAIM: IU

  • APPEARANCE: Beauty was always important to GiGi, and it shows as she tries (and usually succeeds) to fit the ideal beauty standards that South Korea has in this industry. She keeps her hair it's natural black, letting it fall past her shoulders unless stylists tell her otherwise. Her skin is pale, her eyes round, you know, the works that most women in the industry strive for. She stands at about 168cm, fairly average as well as her weight as well, although she'd never reveal it to the public.
STYLE: Being marketed as a First Love type of girl, GiGi's fashion is very flowy, innocent and feminine. She almost always wears skirts or dresses, falling a little above the knee or at the knee. Cardigans are aplenty in her closet, and it's rare to see her without one either incorporated into her outfit, or tyed around her waist at the least when not promoting. She loves heels too, but just really loves shoes in general.

PERSONAL LIFE.

Born as Seo Gyu-ri in Busan, South Korea, she was the third of four children, being the youngest girl and having an older brother and a younger brother who was born in 1996. In 2000, her family was relocated to Seoul, where seven year old Gyu-ri met her next door neighbor and to be best friend, Lee Naeun, alongside her brothers. They began to attend school together and were known to be very close. Gyu-ri was known to be the top of her classes, putting a lot of effort and emphasis on her education and maintaining her rank in her class. Even though she kept her hours fairly full with library hours and studying with Naeun, she always made time for her favorite hobby: Music. Gyu-ri dreamed of a grander, more exquiste life than the one she had now, one where people knew her name because it was up in lights no matter where you went. She, in short, wanted to be a star, and in the form of an idol. She admitted this to Naeun when they were watching a music show one weekend, her eyes never leaving the performer on the screen. As it turns out, her friend shared a similar dream, and they made a pact that afternoon to become trainees no matter what.

So they started practicing and training, and while Naeun was nervous about keeping such a thing from her parents (especially since her brother was also working for the same thing, and they were okay with it, surely they'd be fine with her following their footsteps?) Gyu-ri convinced her that having their parents breathing down their necks about "finding success in a stable career" would only bring them down and distract them. It was better to keep a secret that have a dream taken from you by force. While Taemin made large steps with going to audition for SM, the other two decided to start small, in an entertainment company called Woollim, who was looking to recruit young female trainees for their first girl group. Now, Gigi's plan never involved small: she honestly wanted to go straight to SM or one of the other big names of in the industry and audition, but Naeun was nervous and so she decided to start small and attended the audition with the upmost confidence in her abilities. The two girls made it through their audition and officially became trainees of Woollim entertainment, along with a group of other girls, including the three (soon to be four) that could compose Gigi's first step into the entertainment world.

Now her parents weren't all that concerned with Gigi's affairs, provided she be successful. Gigi was a talented little musician, especially as a vocalist, but she was spoiled and got a lot of what she wanted. She was by no means a chaebeol, but she wasn't exactly just a normal girl either. While her parents told her to do as she pleased, they warned her that success was the only way to be happy, and if she weren't successful, she must do what it took to get to the top and stay there. Fair wasn't exactly a word in their vocabulary, to say the least.

FAERIETALE, DISBANDMENT, SOLOIST.

FAERIETALE: Now Gigi never wanted to be apart of a group, this much was made clear from her confidence and inability to work well with others. She was notorious for constantly fighting with certain trainees but she was usually in the top three for her evaluations, making her a pretty obvious choice for being in their first girl group. Gigi fought with the management and teachers for weeks after she was placed into consideration for the lineup, despiteher best friend also being on the list. She didn't want to be a girl group member, she wanted to be a soloist, she'd repeat, so much so that it was common that the other possible trainees would mock her behind her back when she began to complain during practice. However, the CEO would not budge. Gigi would be in this girl group and she'd be the main vocalist. And she was content with that for a few weeks, after all the main vocalist usually got the most attention in a group. But then she noticed something... strange about the supposed leader of the group. Sang Mi and the CEO were seen coming and leaving together on some days, and seemed closer than a regular employee-employer relationship. So she started digging and looking, and found that the CEO was actually Sang Mi's uncle. This... was perfect, she thought. What better way for her to get out of the group than to use the relationship against them. They'd have to let her do as she pleased after this. But when she implied that Sang Mi's leader position wasn't fair, and that she wasn't happy and the others shouldn't be either, the CEO pulled her aside and asked her if she'd prefer the leader position as well, if she wouldn't let the fact of his and Sang Mi's relationship get out. It wasn't what Gigi wanted, and she insisted on a soloist position instead. Woollim's CEO discredited the idea, saying that if she wanted to be a soloist under their label, she'd have to wait another five or so years until they were established and people would actually take notice of a soloist from them. Staying in Faerietale was the best option for her now, he convinced her. Still unhappy, Gigi accepted the leader position and continued on as the 'face' of Faerietale.

She became insanely popular for her looks and voice amongst the fans they gathered, but not popular enough for her. She was angry at Woollim for being unable to get them on shows and promote them properly. How was she to acheive her dream if the label that convinced her to stay in this idol group wasn't even going to properly use said idol group to get their name out there. Gigi was more than angry, she was livid. And as the saying goes, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And hell came and she walked into the gates with a grin on her face.

It started with a employee at Woollim mentioning this new entertainment company named Starship that had been founded around the same time as Woollim, but seemed to be coming together much better and was eagerly looking for new talent to sign. Gigi started to look into the company, finding the singer K.Will and the advertisement for female trainees, girl group specific or soloist specific. And Gigi jumped at the opportunity, calling them on her own time and speaking to the management there.

"Faerietale is disbanding, and I'd like to get under a more stable company that can see that promotions and schedules are properly taken care of." Gigi lied, asking if they'd be willing to accept an "ex-leader, main vocalist of a failed rookie girl group" who still wanted a shot at a career. Several times she went to audition and pseudo-train in sessions, meeting some of the soon to be members of Sistar and finding it dazzling to be there. A manager pulled her aside, telling her that the CEO of Starship was most definitely interested in signing her, but would need her CEO to officially announce the disbandment of her current girl group and sign the transfer paperwork.

"Of course, Of course!" She nodded, smiling. "I can most definitely do that." She took the paperwork and went on her way back to Woollim, ready to make her own dreams happen.

HIATUS AND SOLOIST DEBUT: Once the rumor of the scandal played out, Starship put her as a trainee on hiatus. "Go finish school," they said, "let the press die down and then come back and start pushing for your next debut." And so she did, for Music of course and honing in on her vocal training and soloist dancing. In late 2009, she went to France and studied there for a year and a half, coming back in 2011 and then debuting first thing in 2012, having impressed with her improved talents when she came back.

At her debut showcase as a soloist, of course there were questions asked about her 'scandal'. "Honestly, I'm so confused to why blame was so suddenly placed on me," She played the victim, pretending to be shocked and hurt, "The CEO had clearly made his decision to disband us and gave us time to either keep on as trainees or find another company. I chose the latter, but when I brought it up suddenly the plans had been changed on me. I was kicked out because I wanted to move on fully knowing that I did my best."

From 2012 with her debut album "Growing Up" she made a very successful soloist debut, using several of the tracks included on the album as promotional tracks on shows, all including music videos and upping her image with every one. She promoted with this album for a year, then went on a six month hiatus to come back with mini album, "Spring of a Twenty Year Old" as a celebration for her birthday. She's dipped into acting and has promoted a new image for her impending comeback.

SCANDALS.

2009: DISBANDMENT OF FAERIETALE: WAS IT GIGI'S FAULT?

Explaination: Self-explainatory, it got out that 1) Faerietale was disbanding and 2) Gigi was on a new label. Happening at the same time? Hmmmm. Everyone's still sort of on the fence about this one, even with Gigi's emotional explanation in 2012. A lot of original Faerietale fans are still unsatisified with her answer.

2011: GIGI GOES SOLO?

Explanation : After her hiatus, Starship announced that at the beginning of 2012 that Gigi would be making her big return to the music industry. It was heavily critcized by many after the controversy back in 2009, but Gigi held strong and won over a lot of loyal fans with her emotional and heartfelt explanation, and continued to win them over with great music and good performances.

2014: SOLOIST GIGI IS RUDE TO HER LABELMATES?
Explanation: At a music awards show, Gigi was seen not bowing and completely ignoring her labelmates Sistar and Boyfriend, dispite them having bowed to her and helped her into her seat near them. When confronted, Gigi claimed that she had just gotten back from performing and was paying attention to the current performance which made everything dark, and just blanked on what was going on around her. Fans of both bands and of the solo artist argue over the timing, some saying it was true, others arguing that she should've greeted them politely anyways, others with their own theories.

2015:  GIGI RIDICULED WOOLLIM'S NEW GIRL GROUP.
Explanation: Woollim had just released promises of a girl group, teasing that perhaps that it's Faerietale revived, and an interviewer had asked Gigi a question about the news, to which she apparently replied, "If they couldn't do it when I was there, how can the expect to do it when I'm not?" It was a written interview and many fans called to question about if the interviewer had written it in for drama or not. Gigi and her management have refused to give statements on the matter, releasing the only statement when the controversy was first brought up, "Please refrain from asking questions of this difficult matter to Gigi. What happened back then is still a very sensitive subject to her and she's expressed that she doesn't want to think about it."

2016: GIGI SPOTTED WITH A MAN?
