Chapter 2

Silent Warriors

A few of the mobile patients were standing in front of the huge door which separated the ICU and IMC Unit, with huge, curious eyes.
While the nurses, students, and doctors were leaving the ICU, Woohyun eyed Sungyeol up and down, before putting a calming hand onto the younger man's back.

To Woohyun, he looked way too tired for his age. Was this the price Sungyeol had to pay for being extraordinarily smart, Woohyun wondered?

“You did a good job in there Sungyeol. You know that right? And if you didn’t react as fast as you did there, the patient might have...” Woohyun didn't need to finish his sentence, because Sungyeol knew very well what could, no, would have happened if he even took a minute longer to prepare in there. He knew how dangerous and divesting Sepsis can be.
“I know. Thank you.” Sungyeol didn't only look tired, he sounded tired. He picked up his pace, shaking Woohyun’s hand away.

“I'm taking my break,” Sungyeol said into the room. “If something happens- you know where you can find me.”
And with that, he swiftly left the room, with a coffee mug in hand, probably heading to his office to take a short nap.

Hoya walked down the hallway when he saw Sungyeol walking towards him, with heavy bags under his eyes.
Sometimes he felt bad for treating Sungyeol in such a mean way, but he couldn't help it.

Hoya had worked hard to get where he is now and he worked hard to get this station to a flawless reputation. Sure it wasn't only him who had done so, because he had learned everything from the doctors who were in the business longer than he was. But, one after one, they had retired and he hears the words his mentors had said to him clearly.

“You're a good doctor and I know you will live up to the reputation we earned. Make sure that everyone else understands this as well, that this is a station where mistakes aren't allowed. Even if it is a small one.” He still could see the fatherly smile in front of him, the friendly pat on his shoulder.

“Mister Lee.” Before Hoya could stop himself he had called out the name of the equally young doctor.
Sungyeol had already passed him, which wasn't a surprise considering the long limbs the boy had. One step of Sungyeol’s equaled three of Hoya’s.

He could hear Sungyeol sigh in defeat as he turned around to meet the man’s gaze.
“Where are you going? I believe all your patients are on the other side of the hallway.”
Hoya could tell Sungyeol was holding in multiple rude and sarcastic comments.
“I'm taking my respective break, 30 minutes, Doctor Lee.”

Hoya shouldn't pester Sungyeol, he knew that he needed the break.
He had the day off yesterday, which he used to catch up on his sleep that he had missed in the past 72 hours. But Sungyeol didn't yet. He was always working overtime, more than Hoya himself.

So instead of irking the tired doctor more, biting down his snarky comments, he let it go. Hoya nodded once.
“When is your next day off?”

That question caught Sungyeol off guard. Hoya knew that he never asked anyone about their working days, none the less him.

“On Friday, sir.”
Hoya nodded briefly. It was Tuesday.
“Make sure to rest a lot.”
Sungyeol couldn't hide his surprise.
“I don't want your sleepiness to affect your ability to make the right decisions in a quick manner.”

And the surprised look on the younger doctors face was wiped off completely, replaced with the usual blank stare he gave Hoya all the time.

Hoya couldn't help but grin, showing his canine teeth.
“Well then. Enjoy your break Mister Lee. Drop by my office once you're done. I'm going to see the athlete with you.”
Hoya didn't even give Sungyeol the chance to answer, to object, or whatever. He just turned around, fixing his, a little too long, white coat and going back to the nurse’s lounge.

Sungyeol stood there for another good minute, still not believing how stupid that Hoya doctor was. He scowled and made his way back to his office, emptying the coffee mug in one go.
The coffee wasn't hot anymore but it also didn't turn too cold.
Sungyeol took off his medical scrubs and threw them in frustration onto his office chair before he dropped himself onto his small couch.
He laid down, his long limbs hanging off the couch built for only two people.

He set his alarm three minutes before his break ended, draped an arm over his eyes and fell asleep right away.

His alarm woke him up from, what felt like, his way too short of a break.
Sungyeol grabbed his white coat, coffee mug and phone. He quickly locked his office and proceeded into the nurse lounge.

“Yoo Jin, do you still have coffee left?” the said nurse silently took his coffee mug and returned it a few seconds later full with the black bitter liquid, hot steam coming out and dissolving in the air.

“Thank you.” He patted her shoulder with his free hand, then grabbed the new patients chart and left.
He still had one minute of his break left.

Sungyeol took big steps until he was standing in front of Doctor Lee's – the devil, how he liked to refer to Lee Howon aka Hoya – office. Why did he even have so many names anyway? He put down his mug onto the metallic table, where they stored gauze bandages, patches and stuff like that, just to pull his white coat on.
He took his mug back into his hand and knocked onto the door of the Doctors office.

There was a quiet “Come in” heard, and Sungyeol proceeded to open the door and go inside, before shutting it silently but quick.

“Ah, Mister Lee.” the sturdy man stood up from his chair, closing the file that he was reading shut.
“You're on time. Take a seat.” He pointed onto the armchair. It was clothed in black leather.
Sungyeol sat down.

“Do you know why I called you in here?” Hoya asked with a serious edge in his tone.
I don't know, maybe to tell me how stupid I am, like you always do, Sungyeol thought bitterly.

Yet he stopped himself to say it out loud, so instead he just answered with, “I guess it's about the athlete who's going to be admitted tomorrow”.

Hoya nodded approvingly for the second time today. Oh how blessed Sungyeol was.
Why would he want Sungyeol with him anyway, Hoya was the one who was in charge of the famous or privately insured patients.

To Sungyeol it was utter bull, though. To him, every patient was worth the equal treatment. But who was he to complain anyway.

“I want you to come with me because I want to see how you make a diagnosis. From taking up the symptoms to starting the therapy and hopefully ending it successfully.”
By the time he had finished his sentence, the doctor had seated himself into the opposite armchair. Only a small, coffee table made out of glass separating them.

“I'm afraid I can't accept your offer to do so, Doctor Lee. I still have my patients I have to take care of, so-” Sungyeol started, as polite as he could but the buff doctor interrupted him with a stern yet confused look on his face.

“It wasn't an offer. You're going to do it.”

Sungyeol’s jaw dropped.
“Sir, I don't think I can. Who's going to take over my patients? Some random assistant doctor? How can I trust them?” Sungyeol’s voice got a little louder and it came out harsher than he intended.

Hoya snorted, his trade mark smirk melting into, what seemed like, a mocking laugh, before quickly freezing back into that smirk that annoyed Sungyeol so much.

“I think you're forgetting that you are yourself just an assistant doctor, Mister Lee.”
That struck Sungyeol’s nerve.
Yes he was just an assistant doctor himself, but he was around here longer than the others and he knew how his patients here needed to be treated.
This station wasn't an easy one, he didn't understand how Hoya was so slack with this.

“Yes, that is true, but I have been around here longer than most of the-” he was interrupted again and Sungyeol found it very rude of the head of the department to do so.
“You’ve been here longer, yes, but you still don't know how to tell patients bad news without having your boytoy next to you.”

Sungyeol didn't know if he was angry about the way Howon worded Woohyun or if it was because the doctor was right. Well, right about the part that he needed Woohyun or Dongwoo with him. Not that Woohyun was his boytoy or so. How degrading.

“You can't speak like that about Woohyun, no matter how high ranked you are, do you understand?!” Sungyeol had jumped up, letting the chart fall down and crinkle up. Woohyun would kill him later on. But he didn't care. This was the first time Sungyeol had lost his temper at the older male.

He thought he had endured enough, he thought it was okay to lash out once because he was talking about his best friend like he was just someone whom he would sleep with.
No one was allowed to talk like this about his best friend. No one.

“He isn't your boytoy? Sorry, I assumed he was, considering that you guys stick together whenever you can.” Did that doctor just offer him an apologizing smile?

Sungyeol could feel a vein popping out on his forehead and he was quite sure he was as red as a lobster taken out of the hot water due to his anger.

Right before he could retort, his beeper alarmed, signaling that the nurses needed help with a patient.

He looked at the beeper, noting the number that was displayed, bend down and took the file and practically ran out of the office without saying another word.

“I will be waiting for you right before the morning routine starts at the patient’s room.” He could hear Hoya say before the said man closed the door of his office, leaving Sungyeol even more frustrated.

It was one of the nursing students who had beeped him and it was for the stupidest reason ever.
“The patient said they had thrown up blood.”
And when Sungyeol asked where the thrown up content was, the student answered with “I couldn't find it” and Sungyeol could have slapped himself and the student.

He remembers his eyebrow twitching and how he slapped his hands onto his forehead and dragged them slowly down his face, halting when his fingertips were on his cheeks and slowly pulling them down.

The student sensed that she did something wrong and offered quickly an apology but nothing could stop Sungyeol’s anger now.
He knew the student wasn't the real reason for his anger but he needed to let steam off and that's how doctors are. Always yelling and telling the nursing and medical students off.

“Next time you beep me, make sure there's a real reason for me to come okay? Don't waste my time. If they threw up, you have to look at it before beeping and you should know by now what you have to do. You're in your last year, and beeping because of something trivial like this shouldn't happen to seniors. Understood?”
Throughout his little rant the student had gone pale and he felt almost bad for her. Almost.

With that, he turned around and left.
He saw Woohyun walking towards the room he just came out and sent him a puzzled look when he passed him without even acknowledging his presence.
Sungyeol didn't see him.
So Woohyun grabbed his arm harshly, which, in return, startled Sungyeol so much that he jumped a little before coming to a halt.

They didn't need words to communicate. Woohyun was sending him worried looks, as if he was asking if everything was okay and Sungyeol’s eyes, which had just been hard and as cold as ice melted right there, as if to ensure Woohyun everything was okay.

Woohyun shook his head slightly, still holding onto Sungyeol’s arm.
“You should end your shift now. You worked over time again.” and with that he let go of Sungyeol, though he was sending him a last glance that said, ‘wait for me so we can go together’.

And so, Sungyeol did wait for him in his office that was at the end of the hallway.

Woohyun knocked the door open with his bag already in his hand.
He kicked the door shut and dropped his bag on one of the free armchairs.
Sungyeol was laying again on that sofa that was way too small for him.

Woohyun found it amusing, really.
Seeing the long limbs dangle down the armrest. It didn't look comfortable at all.

He sat down onto Sungyeol’s stomach, getting an 'umpf, you little fattie' in return.
“Who's a fattie? Me?” Woohyun turned to straddle him now. This was completely normal for them. “I. Don't. Think. So!” He said, flexing his muscles at every word, as if he was proving him that, he in fact, was buff and nothing else.

Sungyeol started to laugh. Woohyun was grinning from ear to ear.
He was still sitting on Sungyeol’s stomach, before taking Sungyeol’s face into his hands and pulling him up into an upright position.
This made him sit on Sungyeol’s outstretched legs.
Sungyeol was taken by surprise, seeing how his laughter had faded right away.

“Will you tell me what is bothering you? And no, I do not mean the lack of sleep, my friend. I already know you didn't sleep for the past few days. There's something else bothering you.”

Sungyeol just sad there like a sack of potatoes, looking with huge eyes straight into Woohyun’s dark ones, clouded with worry.
Sungyeol for sure wasn't going to tell Woohyun that their own boss thought of him as a.. boytoy.

Sungyeol just furrowed his eyebrows, pulling his lips into a frown but refused to say anything. He was scared that he would let the part slip where that doctor had called Woohyun names. He didn't want that.

Woohyun ceased out the wrinkles between his eyebrows with his thumb.
Woohyun knew that Sungyeol was sensitive when it came to things he invested so much time in. He knew Sungyeol had studied so hard to graduate as early as possible, so he could start working with Woohyun.

No matter how hard Woohyun tried to pry it out of Sungyeol, the latter kept his mouth firmly shut, not letting out one word.
Usually, Sungyeol was a good actor. He was good at hiding his own feelings. But the words kind of struck a nerve and he had a hard time not to break down right there. He blamed his current little to no sleep schedule.

Woohyun had pulled the younger boy into his arms, still sitting on his legs. Woohyun’s own legs were draped around Sungyeol’s back. It was a little uncomfortable but neither of them minded. Sungyeol hugged him back, tightly clinging onto Woohyun.

He laid his chin on top of Woohyun’s shoulder, closing his eyes and breathing in the familiar scent of someone whom he associated safety and home with.

The door creaked open, making both look up to the person who just came in without even knocking.
It was no other than Hoya, with his hand on the doorknob, one foot in the room, the other outside. His face showed surprise mixed with shock.

“What are you doing, go in!” Piped up another voice, way too familiar to ignore. The said man pushed the doctor into the room and stepped himself in, not even looking up once while closing the door.
“Sorry, Sungyeol, for coming in without knocking but Hoya-” Dongwoo stopped talking right away when he saw the way the said male was tangled up with the nurse.

A big smile crept onto Dongwoo’s face. He patted Hoya onto the shoulder, opened the door and said “Figure it out.” leaving right away.

Woohyun stood up, making Sungyeol let go of his shirt.
He eyed the doctor up and down, now that he wasn't working, he wouldn't bite back his comments if he should hurt Sungyeol again.
Woohyun knew that it had to do with Hoya. He looked back to the younger one, giving him a brief look, motioning to him that he will wait outside.
Sungyeol nodded once, barely visible.
So his best friend left him alone with the person whom he wanted to see the least right now.
Instinctively Sungyeol jumped up, not wanting to be alone with him right now, went to his coat stand, and hung his white coat onto it. He then put his jacket on and was about to reach for his bag when Hoya had suddenly snatched it away before he could have even touched the straps of it.

“Hear me out before you leave.” his voice was, as always, thick with authority but there was also something else hidden this time. Sungyeol assumed he was nervous, the laid back and calm doctor seemed nervous.

“I would rather not have this conversation right now. I want to go and get at least two hours of sleep for once.” Sungyeol reached out for his bag, only to see that Hoya was holding it away from him.

“We should talk though, I don't want the work atmosphere to get weird.”
There we go again, Sungyeol thought and rolled his eyes. “Don't worry, it won't happen so give me my bag back.”

Hoya furrowed his eyebrow, not liking the sound of Sungyeol’s voice. He couldn't say anything though, Sungyeol wasn't working right now and technically Sungyeol also had every right to beat him up.

“Look, I'm sorry about what I said about your..” he was struggling to find the right word to call Woohyun “your best friend?”
It seemed more like a question. Sungyeol had to be honest, if he had seen two people he only knew from work being this intimate he would have guessed that they were dating as well.
“Yes he is my best friend. Now, give me my bag back!” Sungyeol stretched out his arm, demanding.

“I'm actually a nice person you know? Once you get to know me” Hoya was shocked at his own words, and Sungyeol’s facial expression wasn't helping ease his shock. Sungyeol looked at Hoya like he was out of his mind, as if he was an alien who just came out of a starship.
“Oh my god, oh my god, Nam Woohyun, why did you leave me alone with-” Hoya had closed the already small gap between them and pressed his hand onto Sungyeol’s mouth.

Sungyeol’s already big eyes doubled in size and he squinted down at Hoya’s hand on his mouth, frozen on the spot.
Yes, Hoya didn't only surprise Sungyeol more than once today, but also himself.

“I told you to just hear me out. If I wasn't nice, I wouldn't be friends with Dongwoo, would I?” Sungyeol looked even more shocked. Dongwoo and Hoya were friends? Like.. more than colleagues? So.. friends like he and Woohyun were?
He couldn't imagine that.

But then again, Dongwoo was too nice to anyone. So he snorted against the doctor’s hand, making the thick eyebrows of the doctor narrow, pulling his handsome features into a frown.
It looked like the doctor wanted to say something about it but he didn't press it further.
“I know I come off as harsh and rude-” Sungyeol snorted again, the frown on the other doctors face deepening even more and the clamped hand over his mouth gripping a little tighter “but I can't change that. It's in my nature. You know, because I'm an Aries.” He smiled that charming smile again and Sungyeol didn't know if that was supposed to be funny, but he didn't find it funny at all.

Realizing how weak that comment was, Hoya cleared his throat and dropped his hand from Sungyeol’s mouth.
He stepped away from the taller doctor, handing back his bag.
“I didn't mean to interrupt you earlier. Dongwoo dragged me here. Also.. Don't be late for your shift later.”
And after that little ramble, he had dashed out of the door, nearly running over Woohyun, who just seemed to be startled.

Sungyeol and Woohyun made their way to their shared apartment.
“What did he want?”
Sungyeol sometimes was annoyed by how curious Woohyun could get.  Today was one of these rare occasions.
He heaved a sigh, which made Woohyun look up to him with confused eyes.

“Don't be late to your shift.” He mocked his voice, making Woohyun break out in laughter.
He watched Woohyun’s face light up, his thick lips pulling into a smile, showing his white, straight teeth people would kill for, dimples showing on each side. His usually pretty eyes shaped into crescents, the twinkling of his eyes still visible.

Woohyun was truly a handsome and charismatic man.
Sungyeol couldn't help but grin as well.
Woohyun clapped Sungyeol multiple times on his arm, breathing “That was a good imitation” out between his laughter.

They finally reached their apartment, Sungyeol practically running to his bed. He quickly stripped out of his clothes, jumped into a quick, warm shower. He got dressed as quickly as he could and sat down on the sofa, waiting for Woohyun to finish washing up.

Sungyeol’s own hair was still wet, and he didn't bother drying it with the towel around his neck.
He figured that he could set up their bed while he was waiting for Woohyun to finish his shower.

He brought the blankets, six to be exact, and two cushions to the living room.
Sungyeol spread out the first two blankets, and put two more blankets on top of each other. Then he laid down the two cushions and put one blanket on Woohyun’s side, the other was kept next to him.

People would think that a nurse and an assistant doctor would have a lot of money to be able to afford an apartment with more than two rooms or even a house.
Truth to be told though, their paychecks were a joke in contrast to their working hours.

The doctors literally worked 24 hours a day and maybe, with luck, rested for thirty minutes in their break, and still got less money than a nurse does during their first year. Nurses, on the contrary, are a little better off. They had to work in shifts too, yes, but they actually got to go home after exactly eight hours. Nurses had the privilege to actually catch on their sleep every day.

And currently, it was Woohyun who was earning the most between them.

Sungyeol sat down onto his blanket mattress, cross legged, and started to rub his hair dry.
Sungyeol’s pajamas were way too big for him, hanging off his shoulder, revealing his moles.

He threw himself backwards, his head hitting the pillow, arms sprawled out.
Sungyeol tried to keep his eyes open, he tried to wait for Woohyun but his eyes closed immediately. He drifted off into a deep sleep.

Woohyun saw Sungyeol sprawled out on their made up bed.
He silently went to him and tucked him in, trying not to wake him up in the process.
Sungyeol was a light sleeper. No, scratch that. If you just breathe a little too loud he will wake up and stare at you with deadly eyes.
If looks could kill, Sungyeol’s would.
Today, though, Sungyeol seemed way too sleep deprived. He slept like a stone.

Woohyun straightened up again, looking affectionately over Sungyeol before he went to his side and crept under the blankets, falling asleep.

I'm feeling ALL sorts of emotions from this story like... I don't read fanfiction much cause often the plot-lines are so basic and repetitive, but THIS! This is both very original, and actually has amazing character development. I can't wait to read more of it, so thank you very much for your great writing!
