Chapter 3

Complete Opposites

School passed by quickly, and the two girls were thankful for that. Hyorin had insisted on going to the after school curricular activities fair since she wanted to take a look at the singing club, and thus she dragged Jihyun along.

“We have a shift at 5pm later on if you forgot about that.” Jihyun reminded as Hyorin pulled her from stall to stall. “It’s only 2pm, Jihyun. Besides, we should join some activities; I can’t just revolve my life around schoolwork and a job!” Hyorin said exaggeratedly while Jihyun just shook her head at her best friend.

Hyorin instantly pulled her to the singing club immediately to sign up. “You sure you don’t want to sign up for the singing club?” Hyorin asked Jihyun again as they proceeded to other stalls. “Absolutely. Hyorin, not everyone has a natural flair for singing like you.” Jihyun groaned and Hyorin laughed. “Okay, but you have to sign up for something today, okay? I’m not going to let you look back on your college life and all you remember is books and making money.” Hyorin said sternly and continued dragging her around.

They went to multiple stalls, but Jihyun wasn’t interested in any of them. They were about to leave, when Jihyun stopped in front of a stall. It had the words ‘Dancing Club’ on the signboard and there were a few guys standing behind the counter.

Hyorin seemed to have notice that Jihyun had stopped walking, and she turned to stop and looks at the direction where she was looking at.

Jihyun felt her heart drop and Hyorin knew what Jihyun was thinking. She glanced at her and gave her a gentle smile, “You should try again.” She whispered and Jihyun whipped her head towards her.

“You know I can’t…” Jihyun looked towards the ground as her voice croaked. “You can just sign up for it; you don’t have to join if you don’t want to. Don’t give up on the one thing that keeps you alive, give it another chance.” Hyorin said as she patted her back.

“Hyorin, I can’t…” Jihyun said softly and turned to walk away before Hyorin pulled her back. “Come on Jihyun, I’ve seen you dance. You love it. Just one try, if you don’t like it, you can leave. I don’t want you to have any regrets, alright?” Hyorin tried to convince and Jihyun stayed silent.

For a moment, Hyorin thought she saw a spark in Jihyun’s eyes, but it diminished and she went back to her blank expression. “No, I can’t.” Jihyun said before walking away, lost in her own thoughts while Hyorin sighed.

They had a late lunch and strolled to the bubble tea store. Neither of them said anything as they drowned in their own thoughts, but nevertheless, the silence was comforting.

“Oh, you’re here!” Mrs. Kim looked up as she heard the dangle of the bells at the entrance. “Good evening, Mrs. Kim.” The two chorused and she let out a warm smile. “Put these aprons on, Youngmin will teach you how to use the cash register and take orders. I’ll be leaving now; I’m going to pick my grandson.” Mrs. Kim said as she took her bag.

Just then, Youngmin stepped in in his school uniform and slung his bag over his shoulder. “Hey beautiful ladies.” He let out a killer smile and a wave. “Stop flirting with them, Youngmin.” Mrs. Kim chided playfully as she let out a smile. “It applies to you too, Mrs. Kim.” Youngmin complimented and Mrs. Kim let out a chuckle. “I’ll see you tomorrow, I’m going to pick up Jonghyun now.” She said as she patted his back and left.

They all went to change into the café’s uniform and put on their aprons. “Get ready, we’re going to be busy soon.” Youngmin winked while the two nodded quickly.

In 30 minutes, he had taught them everything they needed to know about ordering and bubble tea recipes. It was relatively simple, just the basic ordering and using of the cash register. Hyorin and Jihyun were thankful they had a good memory and had stayed back yesterday to learn, because they could remember almost all the bubble tea recipes in the menu.

Youngmin was right, the crowd was crazy. It consisted of mostly teenage girls and the two could tell their main purpose for visiting was Youngmin. Youngmin was good-looking, and he definitely had the charm that could make the girls swoon. They both agreed he was good-looking, but they weren’t like the other girls who would fangirl over him or shriek, which was something Youngmin was thankful for.

The last customer for the day had left and Jihyun plopped down tiredly on a nearby seat after being at the cash register the whole evening. The entrance door rang again but Jihyun was too tired to look up, and she continued lying on the table until she heard a knock.

“We’re closed for the day…” She mumbled tiredly, still closing her eyes. “I know, but I’m a regular here, could you give me my usual?” The customer asked and Jihyun raised her head slowly.

Her eyes almost popped out of her sockets. “You again?!” They both shrieked together and Jihyun let out a huff as Sehun rolled his eyes and turn away.

Just then, Hyorin and Youngmin exited the kitchen and Jihyun could tell Hyorin was surprised as well, while Youngmin remain unfazed.

“Hyung, I want my usual!” Sehun said casually as he walked over to the counter and Youngmin nodded. “Coming right up.”

“Aren’t we close for the day?” Jihyun asked loudly while Youngmin shrugged. “I forgot to tell you, this guy comes in only at 10pm, after the crowd has dispersed. He calls it his daily 10pm chocolate bubble tea drink.” Youngmin mocked while Sehun blushed. “Hyung!”

For a moment, Jihyun found it cute. However, she started laughing. “Pffttttt! What are you, five?” She teased while Sehun frowned, “What are you doing here? Stalking me again?” Sehun smirked while Jihyun scowled.

“You just can’t stop thinking I’m stalking you, can you? For your information, I work here.” She said as she flicked her hair and walked to the cash register. Sehun widened his eyes, “You work here? Since when?” This time, Youngmin stepped in. “She started today.”

“I see you at school, at the dorms, and even now at my favorite bubble tea shop! You’re really annoying, you know that?” Sehun complained and Jihyun couldn’t help but let out a scoff.

“You’re saying like I’m purposely doing these things to make you notice me or something. You’re really ridiculous.” Jihyun said humorlessly.

“You two just can’t get along, can you?” Youngmin let out a laugh as he stared at the comical scene unfolding before him.

“Anyway Sehun, here’s your drink. You mentioned you stay near each other, right? Now make sure you them to their dorms. I’ll pack up, you girls can leave.” Youngmin said sternly to Sehun and winked to the two girls.

“Hyung, how can you do this?!” Sehun let out a gasp. “We can get home ourselves perfectly.” Jihyun argued and Youngmin just shook his head. “No can do. I’m not going to agree to two girls walking on the streets at this hour. Just go with Sehun.” He motioned to Sehun who was reluctantly standing by the door.

On the way back, silence enveloped the three of them. Hyorin and Jihyun were normally chatty, but Sehun being there made everything… weird, especially when Jihyun and he basically screamed at each other every time they met.

With no words exchanged, they walked back to the complex and arrived at the dorms. Hyorin said a “Thank you” and “Goodnight” to him, and Sehun replied back while Jihyun debated internally whether to say.

“Thanks and Goodnight.” Jihyun finally let down her pride. She may not like him that much, but she wasn’t a rude person. Unfortunately, he was. He glanced at her and took off his shoes, entering the dorms without saying a single word. Jihyun was dumbfounded, “Did he just walk out on me?!”

“He’s got to be the rudest guy I’ve ever seen!” Jihyun fumed and Hyorin chuckled. “He seems okay, he replied to me though.” “Can’t you see? That guy hates my guts, heck, I don’t even know why!” She exclaimed and plopped onto her bed, still upset over the rude encounter.

--

When they arrived in school the next day, Hyorin ran up to Jihyun in the hallway, shoving a piece of paper in front of her. “What’s this?” Jihyun raised an eyebrow and Hyorin just shrugged. “Look and you’ll know.”

Jihyun took a look at the paper and widened her eyes.

‘You’re cordially invited to the Dancing club’s first audition. Please prepare a dance number and report to the dancing room at Level 3 tomorrow at 3pm. We look forward to seeing you.”

“What’s the meaning of this?” Jihyun asked and Hyorin smiled, “I may or may not have signed up for you for the dancing club’s auditions tomorrow.”

-Flashback-

Hyorin asked Jihyun to go ahead first while she went to the toilet. However, instead of heading to the toilet, she went back to the Dancing club's booth and approached the students standing there.

"Hi, may I know how to sign up for the dancing club?" She asked and the students quickly gave her the sign up list. She saw a few names on it and she quickly jotted down Jihyun's name as well.

"Thanks for signing up! This is the invitation to tomorrow's audition. Hope to see you there!" The student smiled and Hyorin took the paper and quickly ran back to Jihyun.

-End of Flashback-

“You what?!” Jihyun shrieked, gaining the attention of the students walking by. “I know you still love dancing, Jihyun. I can see it in your eyes whenever we go shopping at Myeongdong and you look at the street dancers with admiration in your eyes.” Hyorin softened and Jihyun bowed her head down.

“You think I’m ready for this?” She asked softly and Hyorin let out a small chuckle, “I don’t just think, I know you are ready for this.”

“But what about our shift? I wouldn’t be able to make it for work-“ “Don’t you worry about that, I got that covered. Now, all you have to do is prepare your dance for the audition.”

“I don’t know, Hyorin, I’ll think about it. I have classes now, I’ll see you later.” Jihyun said as she clutched onto the piece of paper and stuffed it in the pages of her books. Hyorin sighed, she knew she hadn’t gotten over it, but she hoped she could. “I’ve done whatever I can; the rest is up to you, Jihyun.”

Jihyun walked to her next class, still pondering over what Hyorin said the other time. “Don’t give up on the one thing that keeps you alive, give it another chance.”

She plopped down on her seat and a few minutes later, she felt a presence next to her. “Good afternoon.” Luhan said as he sat comfortably on his seat. She hummed a reply and went back to her thoughts again. “A penny for your thoughts?” He asked curiously and she let out a small smile. “Nothing much. Class’s starting.” She said as the teacher entered the class.

She took out her book and flipped the pages, only to find the piece of paper Hyorin gave her just now. She continued staring at it, and Luhan, being curious, peered over to see what she was so focused on. He raised his eyebrows; he never knew she was into dance.

“You dance?” He questioned and she turned her head towards him, chucking the piece of paper into her bag. “H-huh?” “I asked if you dance.” He repeated his question and she smiled slightly. “I guess.”

“You’re going for the dance auditions tomorrow? I’ll be there too; I guess I’ll see you there?” He asked and Jihyun shrugged. “Honestly, I haven’t decided.” “And why is that so?” He questioned. “Personal reasons.” Jihyun avoided talking about the main reason why she stopped dancing.

“Whatever it is, I think it’ll be great if you would start dancing again. I for sure would never want to stop since the day I started.” Luhan said excitedly. “I used to be like you too, Luhan.”

She smiled sadly, “Yeah, maybe.”

After pondering for the entire hour, she still couldn’t make her decision. Upon exiting the class, Jihyun saw Hyorin waiting for her at the door.

“What are you doing here? I was about to go for the next class.” Jihyun said and Hyorin smiled. “I know you are probably pondering over whether to go for the auditions or not, so I’m here to convince you, again.” She said while Jihyun rolled her eyes.

“Come on Hyorin, you of all people know why I stopped dancing.” She said as she halted in her steps. “I know why, and I’m telling you, it’s not worth it! The reason you stopped dancing is not worth it, and I know you still love it, so I want you to get back on your feet and start dancing again.” Hyorin reasoned and Jihyun let out a sigh.

“I really don’t know if I’m ready for this.” Jihyun said and Hyorin softened. “I’ll let you think about this, okay? I don’t want to force you if you really don’t want to.” She patted her back before walking ahead first.

Jihyun was about to walk ahead when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around, only to come face to face with Luhan. “I couldn’t help but eavesdrop on your conversation just now.” Luhan said sheepishly and Jihyun shrugged. “Okay… And?”

“My point is; I hope you can go to the auditions. I could accompany you, if that helps.” Luhan said softly.  “Thanks Luhan, but I have to-“

“That’s it; I’ll see you at the practice room at 3 tomorrow. I won’t go in till you come, so if you don’t I’ll have to miss mine too. I don’t think you’d want me to miss my chance of getting in the dancing club, right?” He winked playfully before turning to walk away. “Wait!” Jihyun called out but Luhan didn’t stop and continued walking. “Aish… what did I get myself into…”

--

Jihyun hadn’t told Hyorin about Luhan’s offer, and as much as she didn’t want to face it, she herself knew she still had a passion for dancing. As much as she told herself she didn’t want to dance anymore, she knew deep inside her heart, she still wanted to.

“Just once, I’ll try once, and if I don’t get in, then I’ll forget it.”

“Hyorin.” She called out and Hyorin turned around while she stopped cleaning the tables at the café. “I’ll go.” She surrendered and a huge smile appeared on Hyorin’s face.

“That’s great! I knew you’d agree.” She said as she gave her a hug.

“I just hope this is the right choice, Hyorin.” Jihyun slumped her shoulders and settled down in the chair. “It will, Jihyun, you’ll do great, don’t worry about it.” She patted her shoulders and finished cleaning up the café.

When they got back to the dorms, Jihyun her laptop and browsed her folders. She clicked on one of it and plugged in her earphones. A video of two people dancing played on the screen and Jihyun could feel tears in her eyes.

She held her head up and covered , afraid to wake Hyorin up. She continued watching the video, and without realizing, a few droplets of tears had fallen.

It has been a while since she turned it on, and she decided to watch it again because she wanted to gather inspiration for the dance number tomorrow, however, instead of watching her past solos which she had filmed, she ended up watching their dance.

She turned it off, deciding to free herself from all the unhappiness that it brought to her, and settled on one of her usual solos.

Even though her solo was her favorite one and she could still remember the steps, years of not dancing had forced her body to adapt to it and she couldn’t deny she had already forgotten some of it.

She pulled herself out of bed and headed to the empty dance room on their floor. Each floor had a practice room and pantry for convenience sake, and Jihyun was silently thankful for that as she didn’t need to go all the way back to school to practice. It was close to midnight and everyone was in their rooms, no one would be there to disturb her.

She ran through the routine once, and even though she had become slightly rusty, as she danced, her body had flowed to the music naturally, as if it remembered everything she had forgotten.

It felt good dancing again, she hadn’t attempted it since a few years ago, and truth to be told, she actually missed it. She heard sounds coming from the door and she ran towards it, opening the door immediately. The figure stumbled down and fell onto the floor, while Jihyun’s eyes widened.

“Are you okay?” She couldn’t tell who he was since his hair covered his eyes. He looked up and Jihyun was shocked, again.

“What are you doing here?” She asked and he hastily got up, coughing awkwardly. “I was getting a drink when I heard music coming from this room.” He said as a matter of fact. “So I guess this time you won’t accuse me of stalking you, right?” She smirked and he rubbed his neck awkwardly.

“I didn’t know you dance.” He commented, changing the subject. “You never asked.” She said and they fell into silence again.

“I better go.” She said and picked up her iPod and speakers, leaving Sehun standing at the practice room.
