It has to be You

365 Kisses & A Slap

Dear Diary,
It’s no secret anymore even if I want to avoid it. The news about Sunye getting married to my so-called arch-rival is all over the fashion world. Who would have guessed that the Godfather of the Fashion Industry is Sunye’s paternal grandfather? Of course, it will make headlines everywhere. While I can understand Sunye, who has no family member left after her parents passed away, I don’t seem to comprehend myself anymore. Right now, I have no single clue what I should be doing. Do I still love her or am I already giving up on her?

“Hey Jiyong, are you ready?” Yoobin’s voice echoed through the house and interrupted my thoughts. It is actually the ‘day’ which I dreaded myself away ever since I knew of its prominence few days ago.

“Are you going to the wedding in pajamas?” Yoobin yelled as she stood in front of my room eyeing me like a big sister.

But before I could even reason out to her she continued, “Well you can wear whatever you want while watching Sunye marries someone else. Seems that you don’t have a problem living the rest of your life without Sunye…”

Her sarcastic remark was like a bolt lightning electrocuting my nerves. As always, Yoobin has a way to awake my now ‘dysfunctional brain’.

“No, is just that I ain’t sure what to do anymore. It was Sunye’s decision after all and since she is your best friend…” I said in dubiety.

“Exactly! Because I am her best friend, I’ll make sure that she does not make a mistake which she is going to regret for the rest of her life. I grew up with her and whether the person is her family member or not, I knew her better. Now, get your up and don’t be a coward!” Yoobin cut me off before I could finish my words.

*~*~*

I admit I had no courage to do this kind of thing which can only be seen in movies and it proven to be true when Yoobin and I reached the wedding, supposedly to stop it. I froze looking at how stunning Sunye looked in her wedding dress. We arrived just on time when she was walking down the aisle accompanied by her grandfather.

It was not until Yoobin shouted, “I object this wedding” that I realized the priest was about to officiate the ceremony. Everyone turned to look at her including Sunye who realized we were there. Her expressionless face left me clueless. It hit me that maybe she gave up on our love after what I had done few months ago.

As I was still caught up in my thoughts, Yoobin pulled me to the front where they were standing. However, the guards appeared and tried to stop us. I felt hopeful when I heard Sunye instructed them to release us.

“Grandpa, let me talk to them for a while” Sunye informed her grandfather nearby before she went to talk to us outside, Tae Hwan followed close behind.

“Please both of you, just leave. You are just making things worse!” Sunye hissed at us, as soon as we were outside.

“Sunye, do you realize what you are doing?” Yoobin said as she shook Sunye but Tae Hwan intervened and held Sunye away from Yoobin.

“It’s okay” Sunye told him as he released her to talk to us. He kept quiet throughout the conversation.

“I’m sorry but I hope you can understand my decision. There is nothing I can do” Sunye answered Yoobin but never once looked at me as if I was invisible. At that moment I realized there is nothing I could do if the stubborn Sunye decided on her choice.

“But Sunye…” Yoobin started to protest.

“It’s okay, Yoobin. We should leave. Sorry for the trouble we caused and I wish both of you, all the happiness” I said while pulling Yoobin away, ‘surrendering’ at the situation like a coward.

Without looking back at us, Sunye and Tae Hwan returned inside and soon I could hear the priest officiating the wedding.

“I can’t believe it. It seems that Sunye is no longer the person I knew” Yoobin said disappointedly as we both walked away from the venue.

It was a silence journey back home as Yoobin drove us back. As we reached my house, Yoobin was kind enough to let me be by myself to sort my feelings alone. I was mulling over while watching the huge clock hanging on my wall turned to five in the afternoon. Slowly and without realizing I felt asleep.

*~*~*

“Jiyong, wake up, someone is looking for you” Yoobin called out as I opened my eyes to see the digital clock showing 5:00. ‘Did the time somehow freeze?’ I looked at the date below it and realized that I have been sleeping for the whole 24 hours. The memoirs of yesterday came rushing to my sense and made it painful for me to feel awake. Maybe this is what it felt to be ‘heartbroken’.

“Jiyong, I said someone is looking for you” Yoobin said. This time she came knocking at my bedroom door.

“Just tell them I’m not here” I answered annoyingly as I was not in a mood to meet anyone right now.

“Well, why don’t you say it to him, yourself” Yoobin said as she introduced the person next to her.

“Tae Hwan? What are you doing here?” I said, surprised by his presence. ‘Did he come here to laugh at my miserable condition?’

“Well, Jiyong-sshi, there is a lot of explanation to do. I know that we didn’t start off in good terms but let us not mix business with personal right now and let me start with the most important one. I am not married to Sunye” he said which made me stood on my feet.

“What do you mean? Didn’t both of you got married yesterday?” I asked confusingly.

“Yes, we are at the ceremony but not ‘legally’. You see, my marriage with Sunye is something that my parents and her grandfather planned. We both objected because like Sunye, I have someone I love too. But due to Sunye’s grandfather weak condition, we decided to go with the plan. Mr Min is diagnosed with brain cancer and as her granddaughter, the least Sunye could do was to make him happy even if it means to sacrifice her love for you” Tae Hwan explained lengthily.

“Why can’t you just tell us your plan earlier?” Jiyong asked, hardly believing what he heard.

“Sunye wanted to tell you after the wedding ceremony but then suddenly Mr Min’s condition turned for the worst and he was rushed to the hospital right after the wedding. The doctor couldn’t save him and he passed away late last night” Tae Hwan informed.

“How’s Sunye?” Yoobin concernedly asked, I almost forgot she was standing by the door.

“After the funeral this morning, she decided to go back to New York” Tae Hwan answered.

“What? But, why?” I asked.

“Well, she thinks it is her fault after all that happens and thought that it is best if she doesn’t stay here…” Tae Hwan said but before he could finish his words, I dashed out of the room.

Minutes later, I was on my way to the airport but...

*~*~*

A lady was standing outside the famous Tiffany’s shop in New York. It was still early in the morning and she was the only person around, enjoying her breakfast and the serenity of the streets. Out of nowhere a tall, thin guy bumped into her as she turned around the corner. The hot coffee splashed over her blouse.

“What the …” she almost cursed in English.

“I’m sorry” the guy apologized as he took out his earphones. His face couldn’t be seen as he was wearing a black cap and a hoodie over it.

“It’s okay” she replied as she scrambled into her bag to search for tissues.

“Here, let me help you” the guy said with a Korean-English accent.

His Korean accent made her ‘studied’ him nearer and she was surprised at her discovery.

“Jiyong?” she said as she took out her huge sunglass which shaded half her face.

The guy, who was helping the lady, paused and looked up at the familiar face in front of him.

*~*~*

Dear diary,
I am always surprised with what God has in store for me. Six months ago, I thought He did not want me and Sunye to be together and made me missed her at the airport. To make things worse, Sunye also ended her contacts with her friends which made it difficult for me to find her. But now, here she is standing right in front of me.

“Sunye?” I said as I studied her face closely, still couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a long pause as I wasn’t sure what to say next.

“Seriously Ji, whenever or wherever we meet, it is always unlucky for me” Sunye broke off the awkward silence between us.

I was reminded to the stain on her clothes, “Ah~ About that I’m really sorry. You see accidents happen all the time. Do you think I want to bump into a girl with a weird fashion sense?” I said jokingly although she did wear something off ‘my fashion radar’ as always.

“Clearly, you were not feeling apologetic at all after what you’ve done. You even have the guts to critic my fashion sense. Whatever I wear and why I wear it is my freedom. I don’t take advice from nobody” she retorted playfully. It brought me back to our first encounter at the fashion show few years ago.

“Well, maybe you can take advice from me since I’m a renowned fashion designer” I answered as I stepped closer towards her. I don’t know what has gotten into me but I just want to hug her. Sunye wanted to rebuke by raising her hand but I was too strong for her.

“Ah, don’t even think of slapping me again, a slap from you is enough but the kiss...” I trailed before sealing our lips together.

This reminds me of the movie "50 First Dates" but the 365 time limit...is kinda...farfetched ^^<br />
