A Penny Dropped Led to Another

Fate's Sweet Melodies

Meanwhile outside on the rooftop, Ji Yong and Lia were still lying down, gazing at the stars.

“What are you thinking of, babe?” Ji Yong asked Lia, breaking the silence. He her hair gently.

She lifted her head and rested her chin on her hands that were placed palm down on his chest. “Oppa, I’m leaving on Sunday,” she told him sadly. “I’m just another girl you went on a date with.” She sat up and looked away. “And vice versa.”

He sat up as well and put his arms around her. He knew she felt sad. He didn’t blame her. He felt the same.

“Hey, look at it this way,” he said softly, “when you grow up, you’ll be able to tell your grandchildren that when you came down to Korea for a visit, you met and went on a date with a handsome boy.”

She giggled.

“Just like how I will be able to tell mine of the time when I met the most gorgeous girl ever and had a chance to kiss those beautiful lips of hers,” he went on, fixing his eyes on her as though mesmerized.

Lia blushed, looking up and he kissed her again. Her eyes fluttered shut, leaving her wishing she lived in Korea. That way she could always be with him.

“We could stay in touch,” Ji Yong said. “Do you have Twitter? Instagram?”

“Yeah, I do.” She paused. “Hey, I have a question. Don’t you find it annoying having people create accounts with your name?” she wanted to know.

He nodded, rolling his eyes. “Yes it is,” he replied. He got up and went back inside his room, with Lia following behind. He sat down in front of his chair and logged onto Facebook. “I had a lot of people adding me, people who I don’t even know, and people without any mutual friend. It got worse when I became famous. I had to delete my old account and make a new one to avoid the spam I’ve been getting.”

“Pity.”

He nodded. “So now I add people and ignore friend request unless I know who they are. What’s your username?”

She placed her head lightly on top of his head, smelling his hair shampoo. “Too damn short,” she told him.

Ji Yong paused at the search box. He looked up to grin at her and she gave him a Look. Laughing, he typed in the e-mail address. One result came up. “Is that you?” he asked, clicking on the profile picture.

“Yeap.”

Her profile picture was of her and Mark in a white background, their backs against each other and arms folded across their chest. They were smiling at the camera.

“Nice profile picture,” he commented.

“Thanks. Shervonne helped us take that picture. She’s an awesome photographer. And, hey, yours is nice too.” She grinned.

It was a closed-up picture of him from the waist up totally covered in cream and cake, laughing at something.

He laughed. “It was Bae’s birthday party,” he explained. “We had a cake fight.”

“I can see that.” She laughed softly.

He turned back to the computer. “Bae, hyung and the others, you can just look for their accounts on my following list,” he told her. “I’m sure they’ll know it’s you.”

“Speaking of the others, I feel a bit guilty that they’re outside and I’m not talking to them,” she told him, looking at the door. She could hear laughter and screams from outside. “Should we . . .?”

“Do you want to?” he asked back.

“I don’t mind, but it wouldn’t be  . . .”

He stood up and switched the computer off. “Let’s go talk with my crazy friends.”

She giggled as she followed him outside. They found the four of them in front of the television, screaming at the screen and at each other while playing a game on the Xbox.

They looked up and put the game on pause when they saw them.

“Ah, is the date finally over?” Dae Sung asked with a smile.

Seung Ri had to fake a laugh.

“What game are you playing?” Lia asked, sitting down next to him. Ji Yong sat on the other side, putting his arms around her.

“Fear 3,” Tae Yang replied.

“Oooh, that game.” Lia nodded.

“You know the game?” Dae Sung asked doubtfully.

“NMD — as in Ned, Mark and Dylan, the three guys you met yesterday — always play that game whenever I go over to Ned’s house,” she explained. “They would scream whenever Alma appears. It’s hilarious. What round are you guys at now?”

“Dog round,” Seung Ri told her. “We never get past this level. It’s really annoying.”

She laughed. “I know what you mean, Maknae Oppa. It took NMD forever to get past the round. It’s quite sien after awhile.”

“What’s sien?” Tae Yang asked.

“Oh, it means boring in Chinese,” she told him. “Dylan is Chinese, so he often use terms like this. You’ll start using it after hearing it for quite some time now.”

“Won’t you be scared to watch this?” TOP .

Ji Yong replied for her. “Well, Lia’s got me to protect her,” he said, grinning at her who grinned back.

Seung Ri had to try his hardest not to let his facial expression change as the others all went, “Oooh, go protect her like a real man.”

Lia blushed. “That’s good to know,” she flirted. “I’ll definitely need a strong man who can protect me from anything that spells the word danger.”

“I’m here at your service,” he flirted back, her cheek. He kissed her.

“Get a room,” Dae Sung told them.

“We already did,” Ji Yong said cheekily.

“You what?” the others exclaimed in total disbelief.

Lia rolled her eyes and smacked him in the face. “Oh yeah, he wishes,” she scoffed. “We didn’t. Chill, you guys.”

“Are you a ?” Seung Ri blurted out.

Maknae! You can't ask that question!” the others cried out.

But Lia just waved a hand. “One hundred percent,” she said firmly.

Seung Ri couldn’t help but notice that Ji Yong had that interested look on his face. He grimaced, knowing that look.

Lia noticed it too. “Don’t you get any ideas, Ji Oppa,” she said.

“Caught,” Ji Yong remarked boldly. He nuzzled her neck and she giggled.

Seung Ri imagined him doing that to her, and Lia giggling because of him, not because of Ji Yong.

“Oh, let’s go back to the game,” Tae Yang said impatiently, waving the controller in the air. “I want to kill all those zombie dogs.”

“I’m with you,” Dae Sung agreed.

TOP pressed the play button and they turned their attention to the game. Ji Yong put his arms protectively around Lia. Seung Ri tried his hardest not to let it affect him that much but he was failing.

Ji Yong, Seung Ri, TOP and Lia watched and screamed — which sometimes caused a distraction to Dae Sung and Tae Yang who would scream back at them to shut up.

The game seemed to go on forever so the six of them were utterly surprised when the round ended.

They got past the dogs!

“We got past those dogs!” Dae Sung cried out gleefully and TOP immediately pressed ‘pause’.

“Finally!” Tae Yang cheered.

“Eh, hyung, do your Bingu dance,” Seung Ri said casually, darting a look at Lia.

“Bingu dance?” Lia repeated as the others all begged TOP to dance. “What’s that?”

“It’s a stupid, retarded dance that only hyung can master,” Dae Sung explained as TOP stood up. “Watch.”

“Yeah, and it goes like this,” TOP spoke up. He began waving his hand sideways and up and down like a wave and shaking his leg and hopping around like an idiot.

Everyone roared with laughter at such a hilarious sight.

Lia suddenly had a flashback.

“Ah, Mei, why the tears? Who make my yeodongsaeng cry?”

She looked up to see her big brother looking down at her with concern. “Mama scolded me,” she said in a tiny voice.

“Oh.” He sat down next to her and put his arms around her. “What did you do?”

“I didn’t eat the yucky green food.”

“Ah, Mei, you know that ‘yucky green food’ is good for you.”

“I don’t like it!” She began to cry all over again.

Her brother looked appalled. “Ah, don’t cry! Mianhae, I’m sorry.” Her brother stood up. “Look.” He began to dance crazily, waving his hands every-where and shaking his leg.

She burst out laughing. “Bingu Oppa!” she said gleefully.

When he was sure that she was happy again, he sat back down. He smiled. “Don’t cry, okay?”

She hugged him. “Saranghae, Bingu Oppa,” she murmured, smelling his familiar scent.

“Saranghae, Mei. Naega isseo. I’ve got you.”

Lia blinked. TOP was still dancing. She frowned. It looked so much like Bingu Oppa’s dance. . . . She didn’t realize that Seung Ri was watching for her reaction.

“Lia, when is your birthday?” Seung Ri asked abruptly once TOP sat back down and they all had calmed down.

Startled by the randomness, Lia blinked. “Uh, well . . . it’s actually tomorrow,” she said slowly.

“Really?” Ji Yong said, interested.

Seung Ri and TOP exchanged glances. Just like Jun Mei!

“Hey, isn’t tomorrow your little sister’s birthday, hyung?” Seung Ri asked loudly, looking at TOP.

The others looked at him, quizzically. “You have a little sister?” they asked incredulously.

Something inside of Lia clicked. Everything was falling together.

He nodded. “I lost her a long time ago,” he told them. “She was —” He broke off. “That’s my necklace,” he said hoarsely, staring at Lia’s neck and everyone turned to look. “I would recognize that necklace anywhere. I made that, for my little sister.”
