Chapter 5
You're My DestinyWith my psychology textbook propped on my lap, I was currently seated a couple of levels up the stands, away from the shining sun. I tucked my hair behind my ears as I looked up onto the field to see my fiancé chasing after the soccer ball. After a few moments of skilled ball dribbling, he got past two defenders and successfully scored a goal. I lifted my hands from my book to give an applause, which I was sure he couldn’t hear. But I knew Woohyun knew where I was seated and true enough, he turned to me and formed a big heart over his head before throwing it in my direction. I giggled at his childish antics and it wasn’t just me who found it amusing as I witnessed a couple of his team mates nudging him and chuckling.
As the ball was being brought back to the centre again, I turned my attention back to my book. It was after roughly ten minutes of alternating between reading and taking glances occasionally at the field and noticing the ball being passed up and down with no exciting goals being scored, that my neck started to hurt from the low angle my head was titled in. I took a break and gave myself a couple of rubs on the neck to soothe the pain before exercising it via rotation. I completed 270 degrees of my head turn before noting from the corner of my eye a slender male with a huge camera in his hands standing at the side of the field. I couldn’t see his features clearly from such a distance but I felt a sense of familiarity as I saw the sunlight bouncing off the dark black hair. Without knowing the photographer, I found myself captivated by the way he adjusted his body to achieve the perfect angle; knees bended in differing angles, head titled with the camera and a y arch in the back as he lowered his stance.
A loud cheer broke my attention as I turned my focus to the photographer’s object of interest; the soccer team. It seemed that Woohyun had scored yet another goal in my dazed moment as I saw him surrounded by his team mates giving a congratulatory pat on the shoulder. Once again, his attention shifted to me as he decided to make a statement by yelling out, “Yuri! I love you!” I was rather taken aback by the sudden humiliating action and could only be glad that I was the sole person at the grandstand. This at least avoided some unwanted attention aside from the seemingly excited soccer team that let out chains of wolf whistles at the blatant display of affections; most of which I recognized was coming from a acquainted lanky brunet Sungyeol.
Break time was signalled by a long loud whistle and the entire soccer team started heading towards my area to grab their water bottles and hand phones. This was a sight prevalent in the modern society where people just couldn’t live without getting on their phone to check their messages or surfing the net. My fiancé however immediately scaled the stairs as if he hadn’t just had two hours of soccer practice and plonked himself about half a meter away from me and bent over with puckered lips. I rewarded him for keeping his sweaty body at a distance by placing a peck on his lips, earning myself a dimpled smile along with more jeers from our spectators below.
“Oh yeah, Woohyun is getting some,” Sungyeol exclaimed, accompanied by obscene hip s.
I rolled my eyes at his uncouth actions.
“Watch it ,” my fiancé defended us.
“You better keep your pretty girlfriend locked up if you don’t want the entire soccer team drooling over her beauty,” a guy with beady eyes shouted.
“Oh shut up Sunggyu-hyung, you’re just jealous she’s mine. Bugger off guys, she’s mine.”
Sunggyu threw his towel in Woohyun’s direction but failed miserably as it landed barely two steps above him; far from where we were. I couldn’t help but giggle at his epic failure.
Shouts from the coach were heard as he waved the boys back onto the field to resume practice. I reminded Woohyun to drink more water before delivering another kiss to him. I shook my head as I watched Woohyun’s happily skip back onto the field. That boy was always bubbly, full of excitement and happiness, and that’s one of the reasons why I loved being with him.
I instantly turned my attention back to my textbook, aiming to complete another chapter before the last hour of soccer practice is over. Engrossed in my reading, a sound of a shutter click to my right stole my attention away from the boring text. I turned to my right to discover that the photographer had migrated and was now seated next to me on the steps snapping away.
Upon closer inspection, I realised that the guy I had spotted was the same guy in my psychology class; the stalker who peeked into my diary and called me princess. There was no mistake; the straight dark hair that fell gently over his forehead, the short but distinct lashes peeking out from the closed exposed eye as be brought the camera to his face, the perfectly angled nose and deep left dimple as he pulled his lips into a tight straight line in full concentration. He was extremely gorgeous and I almost had to kick myself internally for staring so intently at another when I already had Woohyun. But hey, a girl’s allowed to appreciate beauty when presented with one right?
All of a sudden, the black-haired gorgeousness turned and snapped a picture of me. I was both stunned and angry at the fact that he had just invaded my personal space, making me feel vulnerable as a candid and highly possibly unglamorous shot of me was taken.
“Hey!” I snapped at him.
He simply placed his camera down and smiled at me whilst squinting his eyes, making him look like a puppy.
“You do know I could sense you staring right?” he stated.
I bowed my head in embarrassment; guilty of the accusation made before attempting to bounce back up as I shot him a flawed argument, “I was looking at your camera.”
“So, can you tell me what brand I’m using?”
“Erm…Nikon?” I randomly plucked a famous camera brand off the top of my head.
His chuckles signified that I had the wrong answer. He merely lifted up his camera with it front-facing me within my eye level and I found the words “Canon” imprinted in the middle with the model “EOS” indicated at the side.
“Ok fine, I think you’re extremely good looking and I was checking you out ok?” I decided to be straight forward and confess my actions.
The photographer burst out laughing and I couldn’t deny that I was attracted to his unique laughter; the sound felt comfortable on the ears and warm on the heart.
“Alright Princess Lee, thanks for your royal compliments.”
“Stop calling me princess,…” I trailed off as I realised I didn’t know his name.
“Myungsoo. You can call me Myungsoo.” And there was the charming dimpled smile again.
“Busy studying?” Myungsoo gestured towards the book on my lap.
“Yeah…exams are in two weeks and I’m getting really worried since trainings are being stepped up now. And unlike you, Mr mind reader, I’m not a psychology expert so I have to study hard.”
“I’m not a mind reader and neither am I a psychology expert, but I do love that subject, that’s why I’m taking it. You, on the other hand don’t seem to share the same sentiments.”
I shrugged my shoulder before replying, “Well our parents chose our classes for us.”
Avoiding the topic, I decided to shoot him another question instead.
“What are you doing here anyway? Apart from stalking me…” I added cheekily.
“Don’t be so full of yourself princess, on the contrary; I’m here to take your prince charming. Competition season is in a month so I’m currently busy capturing all the school teams’ training sessions.”
“You’re in the photography club or something?”
“Yes I’m in the photography club which is affiliated to the school press so our pictures are used for the newsletters.” Myungsoo explained.
“Interesting…” I hummed in response.
“So what are some of the things you are interested in?” Myungsoo asked politely.
“Not you,” a loud roar came from my left.
It was my fiancé and he looked furious. I gently held his hand and whispered, “Don’t be rude Woohyun.”
“I was just offering some company to a girl who’s sitting here all alone. No harm intended. Now that you’re back, I will be making a move. I did manage to get some pretty good shots of your action down there Nam Woohyun.”
Woohyun did not seem pleased at all as he took deep breaths; trying to control his temper as Myungsoo took his leave. I kept silent, knowing better than to trigger an exploding time bomb. Woohyun waited for me to pack my bag before storming off with me in tow, attracting curious looks from the soccer team.
The short drive back to his dorm was silent and awkward, making me more and more nervous every minute. It was only until we were both in the safety of his room did Woohyun snap.
“What the was that?!”
“Woohyun…” he did not even give me a chance to explain as he continued hurling abuses at me.
“I turn my back for a second and you start flirting with another guy? It’s the same guy right? The one who apparently returned your notebook after class that day?”
My silence seemed to be a good enough answer for Woohyun.
“So you like him huh? How much have you guys done behind my back? Are you cheating on me ?”
“Nam Woohyun!” I shouted, outraged at his insinuation and choice of words on me.
“How could you accuse me of such things Woohyun? Is that how you see me? You think your fiancée’s a ? Don’t you…don’t you trust me?” I was in tears by then.
I saw Woohyun’s face ridden with guilt as he reached out for me, pulling me into his embrace.
“I’m sorry honey, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it. You’re not a . You’re my precious jewel. I was just so angry and jealous when I saw you talking to him and smiling. I’m sorry baby, I didn’t mean to hurt you or make you cry.”
“I know,” I replied genuinely as I pulled back from his embrace to cup his face, realising that he was crying too.
I wiped his tears away with my thumb before placing a deep kiss on his lips, pouring all my emotions into it, proving to him how much I loved him. He returned the kiss and it soon evolved into a passionate battle of the tongues as we lost ourselves in each other; right where we belonged.
The click of the handcuff was heard as she was bounded to him.
