Shinhwa's Secret

“Yah, Mi Young-ah, you should come with us for drinks!” Dongwan offered, a cheerful smile on his face. The office was almost completely empty, with most of the staff having headed home after a long day's work.

The supervisor gave him a look. She was exhausted from working and trying to process the boatload of information she had learned early in the day, but maybe going out wouldn’t be a bad idea. It’d help her relax a little, that’s for sure. “What’s the occasion?”

Minwoo leapt on Dongwan from behind, replying for him. “We’re going to celebrate your recent promotion and information clearance at ESP, of course!”

Mi Young looked around, alarmed, but there were no other receptionists or managers in the office to hear him.

“Don’t worry, Mi Young-ah. We normally check before saying things like that,” Andy smiled, glad for her unnecessary concern.

She kept her voice low regardless. “So… None of the managers or other staff know?”

Eric shook his head as he locked his office for the night. “A few managers—the ones who have been working with us for a long time, at least—were given clearance…”

“Or found out when we made mistakes and were sworn to secrecy.” Jun Jin added, stuffing his arms into his jacket.

“That was your fault though, Jin-ah,” Hyesung leaned on the taller idol’s shoulders, his thin hoodie, baseball cap, and sunglasses concealing his amused expression.

The rapper grinned. “Like I said, I was bored in the hospital.”

Mi Young couldn’t help but laugh at the six men. Even though they were ten years her senior and concealed otherworldly powers from the rest of the human race… They were still the same Shinhwa, the same dorky teens who created a group in 1998 and swore to stay together for the rest of their lives.

“All right Dongwan-oppa, I’ll go get a few drinks with you guys,” Mi Young conceded.

His face lit up. “That means I don’t have to be the designated driver!”

Mi Young rolled her eyes. It was true, normally when she went out for drinks, she wouldn’t have any alcohol and would therefore be the one to drive everyone home. She didn’t like the bitter taste and preferred to watch the spectacle of people drinking rather than taking part in it.

“Okay,” She grabbed her bag, shutting down her computer. “Let’s go!”

It was about three in the morning when Mi Young finally rounded the men up and into the Shinhwa van to get them all back to their homes.

“Dongwan-hyung, can you please let go of me?” Andy hissed, his overly formal speech showing exactly how much he wanted to go home. He was crammed into the back seat with Dongwan and Hyesung, leaning against the window to try and put some space between him and the older member.

“But Andy-ah, I love you…” Dongwan gave the maknae a kiss before letting him go and throwing his arms instead around Hyesung, laughing loudly.

Mi Young covered as she giggled, turning towards Dongwan’s place, the closest to the bar.

Eric gave Dongwan an exasperated look. “Aish,” He shook his head. “Dongwannie-ah drank too much…”

“Doesn’t he always?” Minwoo commented lightly, turning from his seat in the middle to watch the overly affectionate vocalist. “You don’t drink often anymore, but when you do…”

“Minbong, don’t say that.” Dongwan’s expression was serious for about a second before he leaned forward and gave Minwoo a peck on the cheek. Minwoo just grinned and accepted it, obviously just joking and enjoying the skinship He turned back towards the front, singing softly to himself and Mi Young recognized one of his songs. She grinned—it was just like Minwoo to sing his own songs when he was drunk.

Hyesung managed to squirm out of Dongwan’s grasp, waving his hand at Mi Young. “Are we there yet…?” His voice was a little louder than normal, but he was smiling, trying to keep up the cheerful atmosphere despite being tired.

“Hyung, do you want to drive?” Jun Jin asked, looking the least drunk despite having the most alcohol out of all of them.

“Why wouldn’t I?” Hyesung shot back, laughing.

“All right, all right, first stop.” Mi Young pulled up to Dongwan’s apartment and unbuckled her seatbelt. “Jin-oppa, can you watch the van while I take Dongwan-oppa up?”

“M’kay,” He said, nodding. He sat up straighter from his spot in the front seat.

Mi Young waited until Dongwan had crawled out over Minwoo’s lap, helping him close the van door.

“See you all soon!” Dongwan waved through the tinted windows and was met with Minwoo blowing on the window and fogging it up until he could draw a heart.

She led the happily intoxicated Shinhwa member up to his apartment, letting herself in and opening his fridge to make sure he had something to eat to ward off some of the hangover he would have in the morning.

“I’ll make you a quick sandwich before I go, okay?” She handed him a glass of water before getting to work.

Dongwan watched her from where he was splayed out on his couch, obediently sipping his water and laughing nonsensically to himself.

“Mi Young-ah, do you have a boyfriend?” He said suddenly.

She held up her hands, startled. “What’s with the sudden question? No, I’m single.”

“Ah, I would’ve thought someone as talented as you would have a boyfriend…”

“Talented?” She scoffed at him, waving a slice of bread at him. “That’s funny, coming from you, Oppa.”

Dongwan leaned back, looking thoughtful and giving her a strangely cute pout. “It’s too bad, though.”

“Too bad about what?” Mi Young asked.

“Ne, if you were our age I bet one of us would marry you.” Dongwan quipped, chuckling at his own remark.

“Yah, Oppa, I know you’re lonely just like the rest of Shinhwa, but isn’t this a little weird?” Mi Young couldn’t help but blush as she pushed the sandwich into his hands.

“I know, I know. You’re more like our daughter or little sister…” Dongwan didn’t argue with her, taking a slow bite of the food before continuing. “I didn’t mean to be weird, though. You are going to make a wonderful wife when you find someone.”

“Thanks… That means a lot.” Mi Young had never thought of settling down. Like Shinhwa, she thought her work was more important than her social and love life. She wasn’t in any rush to start relationships—then again, the six men around her were ten years older and were at the age where marriage was becoming a looming hurdle that needed to be tackled.

“I’ve got to get everyone else home, so make sure you finish that and drink another glass of water before sleeping, okay?” Mi Young folded her arms.

“Yeah, I will. Thank you, Mi Young-ah.” Dongwan showed her to the door, giving her a quick hug and she hurried back downstairs to the van.

“Is Dongwan-hyung okay?” Jun Jin asked as she headed towards her next destination: Minwoo’s.

“Yeah, he just asked some weird questions about me getting married and stuff,” She replied.

“Hah, how weird.” Jun Jin agreed.

Minwoo—who had been quietly texting on his phone for a while—suddenly leaned forward in his seat and spoke up, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Mi Young-ah, if you had to choose to marry one of us, who would you pick?”

“Ah, Minwoo-yah!!” Eric exclaimed, obviously irritated by the question.

Mi Young frowned. “Well… Honestly, Hyesung-ah is my bias.”

“Eh?” Hyesung’s face colored as the rest of the group began cackling and playfully ruffling his hair. He never would have guessed that his dance partner liked him so much. He struggled to come up with some form of a response, but only senseless babbling came out of his mouth.

“So, you would marry Hyesungie-ah if you were the same age?” Eric asked, raising his voice over Hyesung’s blubbering.

Mi Young didn’t pause with her answer. “No, I wouldn’t. He’s too high-maintenance.”

The van erupted into hoots and Hyesung ducked his head, embarrassed.

“Sorry, Hyesung-oppa.” She giggled, glancing at him through the rear view mirror apologetically.

Beneath his bangs, he was still smiling good-naturedly. “It’s okay.”

“Okay, Minwoo-oppa.” Mi Young pulled up to his house, where the lights were still on. Since Minwoo lived and cared for his parents and siblings, it looked like they were waiting for him. “Will you be okay getting to your door?”

“I’ll be fine,” Minwoo gave her a cheerful eye smile.

“Eat something and drink some water before going to bed, okay?”

“Yes, Princess.” Minwoo crooned as he slid the van door shut, waving to the remaining Shinhwa members and practically dancing to his door.

Mi Young waited until she saw the door to his home open and close before turning the car towards Eric and Hyesung’s apartments.

It was a quiet ride there, with Eric and Andy drifting off into inebriated stupors and Hyesung busy playing with his phone, looking equally drowsy as he mumbled incoherently. The only noises were Jun Jin asking Mi Young random questions, or saying that the rest of the group should all go over to his apartment to hang out, which were all rejected.

“Okay, we’re here.” Mi Young stepped out.

Eric was awake immediately and he slid open the van door, waiting for Hyesung, who had fallen asleep.

“Hyesungie-ah, wake up.” Eric said in a singsong voice. The main vocalist’s eyes opened blearily and he growled at the leader, not wanting to budge.

Eric sighed and reached back into the van, slinging one of Hyesung’s arms over his shoulder and practically dragging him out into the warm night air.

“I’ll be back,” Mi Young shook her head at Jun Jin, who nodded and closed the doors from the inside.

It took Hyesung two tries to input the code to get into his apartment and once he was there, he collapsed onto the couch. Eric—after taking his jacket off—stood over him, sighing. “Aish, it’s warm in here.”

“I’m going to make him a sandwich.” Mi Young said, looking around for the ingredients in the main vocalist’s fridge.

“Yeah, he’s going to be so hung-over in the morning.” Eric laughed, pouring himself a glass of water and getting a second for Hyesung upon Mi Young’s request.

“You should eat, too.” Mi Young said. “I’ll just make a sandwich for you here, okay?”

Eric nodded, suddenly speaking in slurred English. Luckily for Mi Young, she understood it. “I wanted to stay over here anyways and make sure Hyesungie-ah eats.”

Mi Young resisted the urge to giggle. “That’s nice of you, Oppa.”

“Is it?” Eric poked the slumbering Hyesung’s cheek, grinning. The main vocalist stirred, looking irritated.

“Eric-ah, get out of my house.” Hyesung sat up, attempting to look angry but only looking cross-eyed.

“But Hyesungie-ah, it’s too cold to go out now.” Eric pleaded endearingly, handing him one of the two sandwiches Mi Young made.

“It’s summer. Get the hell out.” Hyesung took an almost violent bite out of his sandwich, waving the uneaten portion of it threateningly in Eric’s face. He was completely awake now.

“But I thought you wanted to play that new fighting game with me.” Eric also began eating, nodding towards the TV and the controllers connected to it.

            Hyesung hesitated.

“Ah, see? I can play with you and make sure you don’t have a bad hangover tomorrow.” Eric grinned, knowing victory was imminent.

            Hyesung sighed, conceding. “Fine.”

Mi Young observed silently, only speaking up when she was sure Hyesung wasn’t going to kick Eric out in the middle of the night. “I still have to take back Jin-oppa and Andy-oppa, so I’ll be going now.”

Hyesung didn’t even seem to realize she was still there, his eyes wide. “Oh, okay. Thank you for your hard work, Mi Young-ah.”

            “Thank you,” Eric echoed.

“Drink lots of water and finish that food, okay?” She said from the doorway.

            “Yes, Mom,” Eric laughed.

“Oh,” Jun Jin looked surprised as she arrived back at the car alone. “Where’s Eric-hyung? Doesn’t he live in the apartment across from here?”

“He’s staying over to play some video games with Hyesung-oppa.”

            “Ah, I see.”

It was another ten minutes to Jun Jin’s place and by the time they arrived, he looked as if the night’s events were finally starting to effect him. Mi Young cast an uneasy glance at the back seat, but to her surprise, Andy was awake and mildly alert.

“Andy-oppa, I’m going to take Jin-oppa inside. Will you be okay here?” She asked.

He nodded, a faint smile on his face. “Yeah, I’ll be all right.”

“I won’t be long,” She promised, following Jun Jin up to his apartment.

Jun Jin tossed his light jacket over a chair in the kitchen and pulled open the kitchen cabinet. “I’ll make myself this, okay?” He showed her a pack of instant noodles before rummaging through his shelves and putting a pan on the stove.

Mi Young nodded, waiting and listening to Jun Jin narrating every action he made as he was cooking, until the rapper had the finished bowl of noodles in his hands. She double checked to make sure the stove was off and that he was actually eating before leaving.

“Thanks for working so hard, Mi Young-ah.” Jun Jin walked her to the door. “Are you sure you’ll be okay getting Andy-ah back?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Take care, Jin-oppa.” Mi Young smiled, glad for his concern.

She returned to the van to find that Andy had kept his word, staying awake and aware of his surroundings.

“Sorry for the wait, Andy-oppa.” She pulled on her safety belt, glancing at him through her rear-view mirror.

“That’s okay.” He shrugged, not too concerned.

Mi Young followed the same procedure as the rest of the Shinhwa members, walking Andy to his apartment and making him some food. Andy followed all her directions obediently, just going through the motions without any resistance so he could sleep sooner.

“Thanks and good night, Mi Young-ah.” Andy said as she left, eager to return to her own apartment to sleep.

            “Take care, Oppa.”

Mi Young got home at half past four. Despite learning about Shinhwa’s abilities that morning, after going out drinking with them, it seemed like nothing had happened. Shinhwa didn’t act any different and were still the same dorks as before. That was reassuring to know. Things—for the most part—would be the same. Mi Young fell asleep comforted by her thoughts.

            Nothing would change.

            ...Right?

[I’m sorry… I HAD to include at least one drinking scene with Shinhwa, and this opportunity was too fun to pass up. I enjoyed writing the light RicSyung in (and of course, there will be much more where that came from), as well as touchy-feely Dongwan.

Hope you enjoyed!

Now the REAL fun begins… :D]

Sadly, with Shinhwa on hiatus until early next year (and with my inspiration for them running about just as dry) I will be putting Shinhwa's Secret on hiatus until further notice... I would rather tell all my readers now instead of having them wait another several months before my next update or posting updates that are unsatisfactory... I'm really, REALLY sorry and I hope you all don't hate me... T^T I will be starting another project in the meantime and hopefully that will get my creative juices flowing enough to return to this work soon. Sorry again (crawls away to go hide in a hole)
