The room of no return

Description

I never used to think that things could change with the blink of an eye. In fact, I pictured life, reality, to be nothing out of the ordinary. They tell us that magical things can happen at magical times but I always associated those visions to dramas and storybooks. Well, I was wrong. I was proven wrong when one second of believing took my life on a turn of destiny.

My name is Sulin. I'm in my final year of high school and have all those regular hobbies a girl my age would have. I read, play the piano, spend time with friends, and more recently all my time has been taken away by the countless hours of studying.

I'm enrolled in a University Maths course and that's where I head after school. I'm a busy person with a full timetable. But on Wednesday, that Wednesday after my maths lecture, everything changed. Everything.

Foreword

I sat in the front row of the lecture room, the lecturer's voice droning through my mind. Improper Integrals? Taking limits? What does she mean? I sneaked a look at my friend Livvy sitting next to me. She was absorbed. I sighed. Perhaps I was the only one in the room struggling. I clenched my pen desperately and tried to launch myself into the deep mathematical world. 50 minutes passed and it was break time.

Livvy and I, along with my other friend Cass, sat together in the lecture theatre. To our right sat the students from the biggest school in our city. Avonshore. I caught myself glancing at them curiously. Suddenly a head turned and a guy, whom I recognise as Daniel, looked in my direction. I awkwardly glanced away.

Livvy tapped me on the shoulder.

"Hey, we should go to that party they're organizing at school! It's right after the lecture."

I hesitated. No, I have to go home and study the lecture content, I thought.

"Nah.. I think I'll give this one a miss." I replied. Livvy and Cass tried to persuade me but I wouldn't budge.

As the end of the lecture approached, students started packing their bags and the lecture theatre became an animal rampage. I hugged onto my heavy bag of books and pushed through the crowd. Finally escaping to the clear hallway outside, I managed a breath of relief. I slowly walked towards the exit.

But something was bothering me. I kept hearing something. It sounded like a broken fan, crying into the air. I halted my footsteps. Should I turn around? What was making the sound? Though I had so much to do that night, I unknowingly retraced my steps. Behind me was a silent world. Everyone was gone.

From that moment on, all I could hear was the creaks my shoes made on the floorboards. I followed the fan's wail to a massive brown door. It was left ajar.

Curiously, I approached it. I raised my arm and pushed the door open. Someone stood in the small room, in front of a fan, his back to me. He suddenly froze and looked over his shoulder at me. Daniel.

He had a look of panic on his face as be suddenly raced towards me, throwing his arms protectively around me as we both surged onto the open floor. Behind us the fan spun furiously and exploded into a thousand fragments. The groan of a cyclone of plastic pieces and dust enveloped the room into a storm of amazing pace. The room shook like a boat at a raging sea, a deafening growl attacking the towering walls.

Daniel tightened his grip on me as I buried my face in his arms. I couldn't breathe.

And then just like that, everything stopped. The room became as still as before. Next to us lay the broken fan, a message dangling on its damaged propeller.

Welcome to Teziworld.
