Baekhyun x Naeun Pt I

EXO One-Shot Collection

A/N: This is a Baekhyun x Naeun one, but it will feature Luhan x Yuhee, which is why it'll be a two-shot instead of a one-shot! It will be split into two parts. This is the first part, so I hope you enjoy the Baekhyun x Naeun AND Luhan x Yuhee fluff~

ANDDD, the festival, "Thunder Dragon", is completely made-up adn original.

*Festival Part One

Baekhyun, Luhan, Yuhee, and Naeun were out for the annual firework festival – Thunder Dragon. This festival was there to bring the community together. At 10PM, the fireworks would be set off, showing a grand show to everyone who had come. And even those who couldn’t come to this festival – they could at least hear and see it from a distance in their own homes, for the fireworks were shot up very high in town.

Over the weekend, the four decided to attend this year’s festival. Last year, they were much too busy with volunteering and camp and individual scheduling during the summer, but this year, they were free. Luhan also wanted to thank Baekhyun for giving him enough courage to ask Yuhee out. He also had a second intention, and Yuhee agreed – both wanted to set Baekhyun and Naeun up. So, in a somewhat silly way, this was a double-date. They thought of bringing Sehun and Inhae, but they were too cheesy for everyone else.

Since it was summer, even if it was past nine, it was still pretty bright and hot. Even with the girls’ short shorts and shirts, and the boys’ knee-length shorts and muscle tees, it was still very warm. Luhan and Yuhee wore matching caps that they had bought the other day as a couple. Baekhyun would’ve gotten Naeun something too, but it would’ve been much too suspicious. Going obvious wasn’t Baekhyun’s style, even if he made Luhan do it with Yuhee. Instead, he got all four of them dragon tattoos that they plastered onto their cheeks. Naeun put a second one on Baekhyun’s forehead without his consent, but what could he do? He was helpless under her touch. Her smile was so beautiful, her face pale, her eyes big with double eyelids. She was beautiful. He let the stupid tattoo stay on his forehead – as long as it made Naeun smile, he’d do anything – dress up as a clown, jump into ice-cold water, put makeup on and post a selca of it on a public social website – anything. Of course, she wasn’t cruel, so humiliation or pain for him wasn’t amusement for her. That’s another thing he liked about her – Naeun was pure and kind. Yuhee laughed at Luhan’s slips sometimes. Of course it was a joke, and Luhan did the same to Yuhee and they always helped each other up afterwards, but Baekhyun was glad Naeun wouldn’t mock him. If anything is fragile, it is a man’s pride, especially in front of a girl they like.

And there it was. Yes, Baekhyun liked Naeun. He didn’t know exactly when or how or where, but he just did. He noticed how he had an urge to text her, or to see her face, or to hear her voice. He just wanted to be around her, and his friends, Luhan and Kai, realized this. They would about Naeun and Baekhyun would wave them off, but then slowly, he thought they were right. He remembered Luhan bugging him if he wanted to bring Naeun when he was going to go watch a movie with Yuhee. He remembered Kai purposely saying hi to Naeun so that he would get jealous and reveal his feelings. And, most of all, he remembered how Kai pecked Naeun’s cheek which made Baekhyun rage at him right in front of their whole group of friends. It was only when Baekhyun outwardly and openly admitted that he liked Naeun that Kai stopped flirting with her and let Baekhyun have his chance. Kai told him that he was lucky that Naeun wasn’t fooled by Kai’s player charms, and that Naeun wasn’t the type to like boys like him. Clapping Baekhyun’s back, Kai smirked and wished him luck on this festival.

Now? They were on a hunt for some snacks to eat before the fireworks went off. Finally, they decided on spicy rice cakes. Remembering that Sehun’s cousin, Selin, had an obsession for these, they packed an extra package for the Oh cousins and Kai to share tomorrow, since the boys were hanging out. And, because, they felt bad that they didn’t bring Sehun and Inhae. On the other hand, Baekhyun felt slightly relieved. Sehun and Inhae were so perfectly fit together he couldn’t help but feel a little insecure and doubtful on how his own relationship would turn out. He wouldn’t want them to look down on him…wait, look down on him? What? Byun Baekhyun, are you already assuming your own rejection?! Of course not. Naeun liked him…most likely. I mean, if the all-over-the-place female version of Kai and confusing Yuhee actually liked Luhan, then of course the sincere and shy Naeun would like him, right? He was the one she texted the most other than her best friends, Inhae, Yuhee and Hyoeun. He was one of the few guys that Naeun actually talked to. And the other guys she talked to was his friends, and he knew that Naeun hardly talked to Kai because she felt intimidated by him, or Luhan because they had no classes together, or Sehun because Inhae was very possessive. So, clearly, the only person Naeun had to like was him, right?

Then again, the pure Naeun might not even be interested in dating. Baekhyun shook his head, Impossible. Yuhee said that Naeun had a thing for me, right? Still, the feeling of restlessness left him insecure. But, no matter what happens, he had his friends and summer was summer. He repeated his own advice to Luhan in his head over and over and over. Aish, were girls always this complicated? But what Baekhyun didn’t know was that it wasn’t girls that were complicated in this situation – it was himself.

They finished up the spicy rice cake. “Thank you, ajhumma!” Naeun called out to the saleslady, who kindly waved back and smiled brightly at them all.

The four threw away the package and chopsticks, leaving the tray on table where a person would come to pick it up. Even if it was dark, Luhan and Yuhee still kept their couple cap on.

“Let’s go to…” Yuhee trailed her fingers down the tour guide. Yuhee was a very organized person, despite her laziness. She made sure they knew where they were and that they were on time for schedules and events. “…this one!”

“Anything you want~” Luhan cooed Sehun’s famous line, mimicking the tone too. Yuhee wrinkled her nose at the corny line and Baekhyun pretended to violently vomit, which made Naeun giggle. “I’m only kidding. Which one?” said Luhan as he leaned forward to have a closer look at the tour guide, and Yuhee pointed to the attraction she wanted to visit.

She grinned somewhat mischievously. “This one.” Her fingers went next to the picture where there was a small summary, but it wasn’t the font or the whole content that caught her eye – it was seven words on it: perfect for just-about-to-be couples.

Luhan frowned. “But we’re already a couple.”

“Yeah, I know, but…” she glanced at Baekhyun and Naeun, who were nudging each other and laughing. Yuhee made eye contact with Luhan again and raised her eyebrows, “Yeah? Get where I’m going? Besides, we’re a new couple too. It’ll be fun, even if it’s just a walk. Oh look, there’s a prize for anyone that manages to stay together without falling off-course – candy! Naeun loves candy. Plus, the sidewalk is super narrow so you have to walk side-by-side…and pretty lights! Luhan, look, they have paper lanterns!” she pointed at the preview picture of a lantern hung on the side. Yuhee found interest in antiques and old creations, and paper lanterns were one of them, along with grandfather clocks, old traditions and saying, paper fans, and dull colors. Of course, being the bright girl she is, Yuhee liked trying new things and bright colors and loud environments, but she held onto old items for the sake of memory. They were all trash in Luhan’s eyes – old movie tickets, middle school recipes, broken phone cases, candy wrappers, expired bus passes, receipts, ripped phone charms, and torn bookmarks – but it was treasure in Yuhee’s. The way her eyes twinkled, they way she smiled so delicately…no, it wasn’t trash.

“But if it’s a game…Baekhyun hates getting competitive. He won’t want to play,” Luhan said. “He kind of has a phobia of losing.”

“That’s a common guy trait, I’m sure,” Yuhee joked. “But Naeun loves candy. Baekhyun would do it if Naeun does it, right?”

          “I guess…”

“So – Starlight Stroll?” Yuhee confirmed.

Luhan nodded in his approval. Yuhee beamed at him as she turned back at Baekhyun and Naeun. “Hey love birds – we’re going this way! The Starlight Stroll is here!”

Baekhyun and Naeun looked at her, and they gave her an OK sign. Yuhee smiled at them before she interlaced her fingers with Luhan, who gripped her hand tightly but not painfully. His touches were always gentle. Then, Yuhee asked, “Should we wait for them?”

“Nah, they can follow.” He grinned down at her, and she returned it as they lovingly continued their way towards the Starlight Stroll sidewalk.

A little bit behind, Baekhyun and Naeun were telling each other old stories of one particular friend – Baekhyun of Luhan, Naeun of Yuhee. “– and then she flipped him over her back, and said to his face in the scariest voice in the world: ‘steal Naeun’s lunch again and I’ll break your neck’. Oh gosh, she got into so much trouble!” Naeun laughed again.

“Wow, Yuhee was scary as an elementary kid…” Baekhyun said, shivering in fear. He knew that Yuhee was a very strong girl, and her light punches hurt like she had thrown a rock at you. With that kind of strength, she could be a wrestler. “She’s scary now too, but, you know.”

Naeun laughed. “She’s a very loyal friend though. She didn’t even mind getting in trouble for me. She did, because, you know, she physically hurt the guy. But she scared him so much he couldn’t even tell the teacher what happened! And when the teacher asked Yuhee to explain, she said the truth: ‘he keeps stealing Naeun’s food’. The boy admitted to that and he apologized to me. After that, he never even looked my way.”

“The Stroll started!” Yuhee called back at them. Naeun saw how Yuhee and Luhan were holding hands even in this heat, and suddenly, the absence of another hand with hers felt strangely noticeable. “You have to stay on the sidewalk the whole time, okay? You have to be side-by-side and you can’t go in a single file. You have to walk in pairs too, alright? Get off the lane even by accident and you lose!”

Baekhyun frowned, “Is this some kind of game?”

          Yuhee nodded.

          Baekhyun sighed, “Not interested.”

Yuhee shrugged. She turned back to face the front, only to look back again for a dramatic effect: “I forgot to tell you, but there’s a prize for any two people that walk on this sidewalk and they stay on the sidewalk.”

“What’s the prize?” Naeun asked curiously.

There it is, Yuhee thought. She grinned, “Candy.”

Yuhee didn’t have to look at Naeun to know her reaction – she could imagine it, and she could clearly hear the reaction too. Naeun tugged at Baekhyun’s shirt, “Baekhyun! We have to go on this Stroll and win – we get candy if we do! We have to, we have to, we have to – free candy just for walking on a sidewalk with a partner – isn’t that brilliant? We have to! Baekhyun, please? It’s candy!”

Baekhyun let her shake him wildly for a bit. The desperation in her voice made him weak and of course he had to submit to her. He nodded, which made her squeal like a piglet. She smiled at him ever so brightly and thanked him. He returned it, “No problem. No price for losing, right?”

“Well, not getting free candy is kind of a price…but you burn calories so who cares, right? It’s a win-win situation! And it’s probably a really easy win too – look at how thick the sidewalk is! I don’t see what’s so hard about it. I wonder if they have enough candy in stock…it’d be terrible to finish this Stroll and find no candy! Right?”

Yuhee heard Naeun’s happy response and Baekhyun’s submission, so she couldn’t help but smile. What she didn’t tell them, though, was that the sidewalk would get narrower as they walked on, and surely enough, after about ten minutes, the sidewalk narrowed a bit, but there was enough space for four people to walk. It was like a road.

“You know Luhan used to be one of those emo freaks?”

“What? No way!” Naeun’s jaw dropped. “The bubbly Luhan – emo? No way, no way…”

Baekhyun smirked. “Way. In middle school he had his hair black and long, right? He looked like a Japanese anime freak. He took those mirror pictures and stuff. He wore different colors in clothing but his hair was too dark and his skin too pale. I mean, I couldn’t even tell the kid was good-looking till he got his hair cut and dyed. Look at him now! He works out too you know, just for Yuhee. Remember how Yuhee mentioned abs as a turn-on back in December?”

Naeun recalled the moment. It was the first time she and Baekhyun had a good conversation. They met before and they greeted each other in the hallway and she always thought he was cute, but they didn’t really get to talk for long. He always texted her and stuff, but it didn’t last long. It was only in December at Hyoeun’s house when they played truth or dare and the question game did they really start talking. “Yeah! Oh my gosh, does Luhan work out because of that?”

Baekhyun nodded deviously. “Since then that kid went through weight training and went on runs with Kai and worked twice as hard on the soccer team. He always had a good build but he didn’t define it – until Yuhee brought that up.”

Naeun smiled. “Aw, that’s so sweet! I didn’t know Luhan had a determined side to him…he always got what he wanted and he’s like – talented in everything, right? No wonder he and Yuhee make a perfect match – two prodigies make a prodigy couple.”

“Hey! What does that make me?”

“Average. Completely average,” Naeun joked, and Baekhyun pouted. “It’s okay, I’m average too,” she added after with a smile.

Baekhyun raised his eyebrows at her – “so we make an average couple?”

Naeun shook her head, “I’m a bit higher than average. So we’d make a very bad couple. If a peasant comes with a knight, that wouldn’t work out, right?”

Baekhyun raised his eyebrows. “You’re the knight?”

“They had female knights in the Middle Ages in Europe you know.”

“Yeah, but we’re in Korea. All the females did in ancient Korea was wear dresses and get married.”

Naeun scoffed. “No! Empress Myeongseong was a great woman in ancient Korea, who gave up royal events like tea parties to read, teach herself philosophy, science, history, politics, and religion. Yuhee told me this, I remember!”

“Pretty sure she wore dresses and got married,” Baekhyun retorted.

Naeun opened to say otherwise, but he was right. “There’s nothing wrong with wearing the traditional dress and marrying!” she exclaimed in defense.

He laughed at her cuteness and pinched her nose. “You’re too cute,” he said in the heat of the moment that he was getting too caught up in. And when she stopped walking and blushed, he realized what he said – he called her cute.

“D-Did you just say I’m c-cute?” Naeun stuttered.

Baekhyun suddenly averted his gaze and rubbed the back of his neck. He didn’t know what to say – what was he supposed to say? Was Naeun offended? Should he have said pretty or hot or something else? But her reaction was cute! Honesty’s the best policy, Baekhyun, he told himself. There was nothing wrong, right? “Y-Yeah…”
