The Perks of Wanderlust

"Hana used to play with Sangchu like that." Baekhyun whined, burying his face into his pillow. Once Chanyeol heard the name 'Hana' slip past Baekhyun's lips, he scoffed and continued to scratch the back of Sangchu's ears with a wide grin on his face. The fluffy white dog nuzzled its face onto Chanyeol's hand and began to his fingertips. Chanyeol chuckled and tapped Sangchu's onyx nose before laying down on Baekhyun's bed, staring at the tacky glow-in-the-dark stars. Simultaneously, the teenage dirt bags sighed to themselves, mentally complaining on how boring their summer was.

The moment school had ended, the two best friends decided that their summer would only consist of laying around the house to bum and do absolutely nothing, and that was exactly what they had done for the past three weeks into the summer. Chanyeol's suggestion of going on a road trip was not very successful, after all.

Although Chanyeol 'tried' very hard to convince Baekhyun, his little suggestion of going on a road trip was immediately forgotten the week after he proposed the idea without thought. But as the two stared at the glow-in-the-dark stars with blank minds on a Sunday midnight, the suggestion was slowly coming back into Chanyeol's brain.

"Hey, Baek," Chanyeol called, staring out the window next to him. "Yeah?" Baekhyun asked, slowly lulling himself to sleep. "What do you think about that road trip I asked about three weeks ago?" Chanyeol asked innocently. A groan escaped Baekhyun's chapped lips. He brought the pillow that was resting beneath his head to cover both his face and ears.

"I thought you were over that once I said no." Baekhyun spat, obviously annoyed at Chanyeol's persistence.

"I know. But as your best friend I really do think that a little getaway will help you with your heartbreak." When Baekhyun gave him a blank look, Chanyeol further explained. "You know, to break lose and not give a about anything or anyone." Baekhyun sighed once before sitting up on the bed to swing his legs onto the wood floor. "Do you not understand, Chanyeol? I don't want to go on a damn road trip, okay? I'm in the mood for some midnight coffee. Care to join?" Chanyeol mentally rolled his eyes, but nodded nonetheless.

"Fine. But you're paying." Chanyeol replied. Before Baekhyun could protest, Chanyeol shook his head, ending the argument.

✖ ✖

As the two boys entered the twenty-four-hour coffee shop just down the road, the strong smell of dirty musk mingled with the smell of bland coffee wafted up their noses. Baekhyun scrunched up his nose as soon as the two distinct odors found their way to tickle his sense of smell. Chanyeol, on the other hand, breathed in delight as though he wasn't just there the day before to buy some beer. Baekhyun rolled his eyes at his idiotic best friend before setting himself on a two person table far away from the all drunkards, college students with bad hangovers and possible rapists or murderers.

"Chanyeol-ah!" Baekhyun called just as Chanyeol parked himself in line. "You know the usual, right?" Baekhyun asked. Chanyeol nodded for confirmation and went on to order their usual - two black coffees; no sugar, no cream.

Once Chanyeol arrived at the table, Baekhyun sighed once more, reaching over to grab his coffee. A glum expression was present on Baekhyun's puppy-dog-like face and Chanyeol frowned.

"Hey, c'mon. Be happy now that you've broken up with that . She cheated on you! How can you be upset over a backstabbing, y, ty, y, that-" Baekhyun suddenly thumped Chanyeol on the forehead, tired of hearing the same string of insults over and over again. Ever since he had broken up with Hana, the same string of curse words would slip out of Chanyeol's mouth in the same order. Hearing it for the millionth time only made things worse for him.

Miserably, Baekhyun took the coffee stick and stirred it in his pitch black coffee. Although this particular cafe was (really) sketchy, Baekhyun couldn't help but be reminded of his past dates with Hana. Their dates were always within peaceful atmospheres. Whether it be a cafe, a movie theater or a walk around the park.

"This isn't even a place where couples go out for dates! How can you be so easily reminded of your past relationship with that ? You aren't helping yourself, Baek." Chanyeol scoffed, unimpressed.

"Exactly! If I can't even save myself, then how can you?" The shorter groaned, tugging at his brown locks of hair resentfully.

Chanyeol looked at Baekhyun with sympathy. He wanted to help Baekhyun - he really did. But the only suggestion of help that came to his head was- once again - that road trip. Maybe the saying 'third times the charm' would apply.

"I'm telling you. That road trip idea is the only way. Going on a road trip helps you run away from all trouble. Seeing and experiencing new things can help you forget about that Jung Hana and focus on the task at hand instead. Think about it. Maybe we can even do the crazy on our bucket list. We can skydive, go river rafting, ride a hot air balloon, whatever." Chanyeol almost pleaded. Baekhyun narrowed his eyes and then nonchalantly began to sip his beverage. "Maybe." He simply said.

In delight and hope, Chanyeol shot up with a fist pump, exclaiming a "yeah!" In embarrassment, Baekhyun duck his head down as soon as he caught sight of other customers eyeing Chanyeol with glares.

"Hey! That doesn't mean a definite yes!" Baekhyun lightly scolded, making sure that his voice was barely above a whisper. "Still," Chanyeol grinned. "That kind of says that I've won." Baekhyun rolled his eyes. "Don't be too sure of yourself, idiot."

Just as the conversation was on the brink of disappearing, Chanyeol suddenly gasped. Confused, Baekhyun eyed Chanyeol warily and asked what was wrong.

Grinning deviously, Chanyeol mused, "You owe me exactly seven dollars and twelve cents." Bewildered, Baekhyun cried out, "The ? For what?!" Chanyeol's made hand gestures towards the two cups of coffee. In response, Baekhyun groaned and began to fish out seven crinkly one dollar bills, a dime and two pennies.

" you." Baekhyun spat, throwing his money at Chanyeol. Chanyeol chuckled and grinned in victory, placing the money inside his sweater pocket. "Love you, too." Chanyeol winked.
