Mandarin and McDonalds

Repeat After Me~

Jimin threw herself back onto the hotel bed. I was surprised by the amount of people who were outside the hotel waiting for Super Junior’s arrival; it was hell trying to get out of that airport. I laid my bag down on the other bed and plopped myself down, kicking off my shoes. I felt so tired and jetlagged. In the car Manager Lee informed me that I would be having dinner with all of the members. There were a few days before the concert actually started in which the boys were expected to practice their English. I was so tired, this company was tough. It was just go, go nonstop with them!

“Yah…why do you always look so sad?” Jimin asked.

I snapped out of my trance and looked to her standing in front of me. I was zoning out and hadn’t even noticed her. “What do you mean?”

She rolled her eyes. “Whatever, get up I need to do your hair and makeup.” Jimin grabbed my arm and pulled me over to the desk chair. I sat myself down and watched as Jimin thought about how she was going to make me look.

Nervously, I cleared my throat. “So does Super Junior do a concert ever year?” I was just trying to make small talk because the awkward silence was killing me.

“Mostly. You know it’s not just them though right? There are two other groups who are also performing.” She the straightener and began to section off my hair.

My eyes widened. Wow, how did I not realize that there were going to be other artists? “Oh? Like who?”

She scrunched up her face in thought. “Not that you would know any of them. But by now I’m sure you’ve done some research on the company. Well, it’s another guy group and a girl group who are fairly new; they actually just debuted a month ago.”

UGH!! WHO?! I flinched as the straightener came very close to my scalp. “Is the guy group as famous as super junior?”

She shrugged. “I would assume so. They’re-…”
RING.RING.RING. We both looked to the hotel telephone ringing on the night stand. I stared at it in disbelief. Jimin put down the straightener and went to answer the call. I stared at my mess of a self in the mirror. Who could the other guy group be?

Jimin hung up the phone and walked back over to me, working on my hair again. She didn’t continue talking about the group like I hoped she would and frankly I was kind of afraid to ask her. She intimidated me sometimes.

Finally, after all the makeup was put on and after the hairspray had finally settled in my hair, I gathered my messenger bag filled with worksheets for the boys. Jimin sat on the bed, boredly flipping through the channels on the television.

“I hate American television.” She commented.

I smirked. “Where was my note with the place I was supposed to meet the boys at?” I asked searching over the counter where I thought I’d left it.

Jimin pointed to the floor by my foot. I picked it up and re-read over my sloppy hand writing.

3233 W. Blair St., bring your materials for the boys to go over. Tell the front desk to call you a taxi and take you to this address. –Manager Lee.

“I’m leaving now.” I called to Jimin as I made my way towards the door.

She waved her hand in dismissal.

I made my way towards the elevator, as the doors opened; I noticed Hangeng standing in the corner of the elevator. He was obviously trying his hardest to not be recognized by anyone, which made him look a bit too conspicuous. He wore a trucker hat and very dark tinted shades, his face hung low, avoiding eye contact. I cleared my throat and entered the elevator, standing in the opposite corner.

He fumbled in his pocket for something, after a few seconds he clumsily dropped his phone on the floor.

Instinctively I bent down to pick it up. At the same time he had also bent over, his shades sliding off his face. I grabbed both objects as he cursed under his breath.

“Here you go.” My Chinese was a lot rustier then I thought it was. I smiled and handed Hangeng his cell phone and sunglasses.

He seemed very taken aback that I had spoken to him and in Mandarin no less. The elevator doors opened and I my heel to make my way out. Before I could actually step out, I felt Hangeng grab my arm and stop me.

“Wait.” He countered back in Mandarin.

I turned around to face him a bit confused and disoriented at the fact that he was still holding onto my arm.

He looked down to his hand and then quickly shied away. “Thank you. For picking up my things.” He had returned to speaking Korean. I raised a brow. Why didn’t he just answer me in Mandarin? He held his hand in front of the metal door as it began to close and nodded his head for me to go out first. I slipped out and made my towards the front desk, looking back only once to see where Hangeng was headed. I saw a few girls waiting outside of the hotel, squealing excitedly as they saw him head out, head hung trying to cover his face again.

The young woman at the desk smiled at me as I turned to face her and began to ask her about calling me a taxi. She immediately got on the phone to call one up to the front.

“Miss, your cab is going to pick you up on the side of the hotel.” She smiled and politely pointed me in which direction to head too.

I thanked her and headed through the lobby, adjusting my large black sunglasses over my eyes. The glass doors automatically parted as I came closer. Around the corner of the street I could see a small yellow cab begin to pull up towards the curb. Assuming it was for me and seeing no one else looking as if waiting for one, I approached it absentmindedly opening the door and coincidentally so did someone else. As I opened the door to settle myself inside my eyes made contact with Hangeng, who looked just as surprised as I did. He did a double take through the back window and quickly got in the taxi pulling me inside and closing my door behind me. He looked to the driver and handed him a piece of paper.

I fell in an awkward position on Hangeng’s lap, quickly sitting upright, ears burning a bright pink. He looked back and breathed a sigh of relief.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS? I looked back and noticed that there were a large crowd of people who had been following Hangeng.

“Are you ok?” I asked in Mandarin.

He shot me a harsh look. “Why don’t you speak to me in Korean? Do you think I’m too stupid to understand and answer in Korean?” Instead of sounding rude, he just sounded hurt and offended.

The driver looked back. “Where to?”

Frazzled and thrown off by Hangeng’s assumption, I shakily handed the driver the piece of paper and then turned my attention back to Hangeng.

“I don’t think that. I just thought it would make you feel more comfortable.” I replied softly.

He huffed and turned away from me. I instantly felt bad because I didn’t mean to upset him. It seemed odd for him to be upset and throughout the car ride we both sat in silence. I was afraid of saying anything that would upset him more.

When we finally reached the restaurant, we both entered through the back door and found Manager Kim with the other twelve members, seated to the back in a private room. As I passed by the main room of the restaurant I stopped in my tracks, my eyes drifting to a table of girls.

MINJU?! I lowered my shades which I hadn’t taken off even though I was inside and the sun had already set. My jaw dropped from shock. Why was she in LA? Had she really decided to stalk Super Junior here? She glanced over at me, tilting her head and then slowly standing up. OH NO! I pulled up my shades and rushed away towards the back door.

“Where are you going?” Hangeng asked, surprisingly following me.

I wasn’t sure if Minju was following me so I headed towards the alleyway where I knew she wouldn’t go. I quickly headed the corner into a dark space.

“What are you doing?” He muttered as we entered the alleyway. I pulled him into the dark with me, shushing him with my hand.

Just as I had feared, Minju entered the alleyway but didn’t dare go into the darker lit area where I hid myself and Hangeng, pressed up against the brick wall of the building. She scratched the back of her head and took a few steps forward but then immediately retreated back inside of the restaurant.

Once I was sure she had gone back inside, I removed my hand from Hangeng’s mouth. He was, to my surprise, calm.

“I can’t go back in there.” I mumbled.

I felt him shift his position next to me. “Why?”

What was I supposed to say? I couldn’t exactly tell him the truth. Quick, think of something!

“I saw that girl at the hotel. She was one of your fans. I heard her say that she-…” I was stuck.

Hangeng cleared his throat. “She said what?”

“Uh, well, she threatened to find me and hurt me.” My voice was shaky as the lie slipped through my lips, which probably added to the affect of the lie.

Before he could reply, we both turned to the voices that were speaking english from the back door. Oh no! They’re going to find us for sure! In a panic I decided maybe I should just give up and go to Minju, tell her the truth, and leave Suju forever. I took a tiny step forward but before I reached the light, Hangeng pulled my hand and briskly walked my through the alley towards the street.

“What are you doing?! Someone’s going to recognize you!” I whispered worriedly.

Hangeng’s grip on my hand tightened as we reached the end of the alleyway and turned a sharp left, with quick steps almost racing down the street. I kept my head down, staring at my feet, too afraid to look up at anyone or anything. I heard the swing of a door opening and could see from the ground that we were in a brightly lit building.

“Lift up your head, people are staring at you.” Hangeng whispered.

I did as he suggested and quickly realized we were in a Mcdonalds. I raised a brow. Really, Hangeng? This is the place you pick to hide in?! My heart stopped as I looked around and smiled politely at everyone.

Hangeng dropped my hand. “I’m hungry.” He stated sheepishly.

I stared at him. Oh, he is serious. I reached into my purse and pulled out my wallet, and this time I grabbed his hand. “Dinner’s on me!”

---

I took the last bite of my hamburger. Hangeng blinked and quietly sipped at his coke. The question was burning in my throat but I was afraid to ask.

“So why won’t you speak to me in mandarin?” It just came out without hesitation.

He got up to refill his cup and then walked outside. I quickly followed him into the parking lot.

“I’m sorry I was just curious!” I apologized.

Hangeng ran his fingers through his hair, sitting down on the curb. “It was really hard for me to find my place here.” He was finally using mandarin. I sat down next to him, listening intently. He smiled, shook his head and looked away from me.

“But you found it right? With your members?”

He looked back to me, our faces so close. I could see his face flush in color and he quickly lowered his gaze. “Well, um…I guess so, yea. It’s still a little lonely though.” He sighed and wrung his hands together.

I scooted closer to him, our knees touching. “If it makes things less hard on you. I want you to speak to me in mandarin.” I smiled and patted his hand.

Hangeng cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck. I looked down to my cell and noticed I had three missed calls from Jimin and two from manager Lee. Oops…

----

“Where the hell have you guys been?!” Manager Kim’s voice was not level, nor concerned, just loud trying to intimidate us.

Kangin snickered as he passed by in the hall way, walking to his room. A door creaked open. I lifted my eyes to see Donghae and Kibum peeking through the tiny crack in the door, listening to Manager Kim scold Hangeng and I.

“It was my fault. I saw some fans and you know how I panic.” Hangeng lied, his head hung low. I opened my mouth to say something but before I could, Manager Kim had walked away in a huff.

“Goodnight, Jade. And thank you.” Hangeng spoke in Mandarin, smiled and walked off towards his room.

Donghae and Kibum both gave each other puzzled looks. I quickly walked passed their door and made my way towards the elevators. I didn’t feel like going back o my room just yet. I didn’t want to face Jimin and all her questions just yet. I pressed the button for the very last floor. I knew that it led to a balcony for the guests and I wanted to see the stars and just be by myself for a while. Seeing Minju really scared me and i had to really watch out for her now. The elevator halted to a stop and the doors opened slowly. I walked out and turned a right, making my way towards the door that led to the balcony. As I opened the doors a strong breeze engulfed me and I instantly felt Goosebumps all over my arms and legs. I shivered and wrapped my arms around myself.

“Cold?”

I felt someone put a jacket over my shoulders and my heel to see who it had been.

HOLY EFF.

“My name’s Minho.” He smiled.

SHINEE’S THE OTHER BAND?!

Aish. I hate that Lia. It's frustrating. I don't like Jade to be in trouble. I hope she'll be okay.
