THAT NIGHT

“Shouldn’t you be asleep Jaeyoung-ah?” Jaeyoung’s mother, Hye Kyo said as she entered her room

“Omeoni, why are you here at this time?” Princess Jaeyoung said as she hid the history book under her blanket

“Don’t hide it. I know that you read those books. It’s your secret.”

“I’m sorry Omeoni.” Princess Jaeyoung said with a sad face

“Don’t be sad. I’m not angry. I used to that too at your age. That is why your father trusted me as we led our family.”

“Omeoni, how did you and Abeonim choose the right heir to the throne and future husband for me?” Jaeyoung said as she looked at her mother

“I wanted to pick Prince Seunghyun at first. He seemed arrogant but I thought he would give a good answer. Instead, his answer brought out an awful look on him. Your father was arrogant at first but he was wise enough to give a good answer. Prince Yunkyo gave a wise answer.” Hye Kyo said as she brushed Jaeyoung’s long hair

“Omeoni, I hope Prince Yunkyo would be able to handle his duty in the future.” Jaeyoung said as she smiled

“I hope so too. I have a surprise for you my daughter.”

“Really?! What is it Omeoni?” Jaeyoung said with a sparkle in her eyes

“You will start wearing this tomorrow.” Hye Kyo said as she brought out a beautiful attire that could only be worn by a crown princess. It had blue, pink colors and gold to show the sign of royalty.

“Thank you Omeoni! I’m excited to wear it.” Jaeyoung said as she held the attire her mother gave her

“I see you fancy it.” Hye Kyo said with a smile

“I’ll definitely wear it tomorrow. My Crown Prince is also wearing his attire tomorrow.” Jaeyoung said as she blushed. Hye Kyo then kissed her daughter’s head.

“You are the best Omeoni! I love you.” Jaeyoung said as she hugged her mother

“I love you too my daughter. I’ll let you sleep first before I leave.”

“Yes Omeoni. Omeoni……”

“Yes?” Hye Kyo asked as Jaeyoung pouted

“Omeoni, caress my hair and give me kisses like when I was little.” Jaeyoung said as she got her mother’s hand and let it touch her head

“Very well.” Hye Kyo said as she lay beside her daughter, caressing her hair while humming her to sleep. Jaeyoung slowly got drowsy and closed her eyes. Hye Kyo kissed her daughter’s cheek and tucked her in before she left the room.

THE NEXT DAY

“Your highness, it’s time to get up.” Sungmin said as she held Jaeyoung’s shoulder. The princess fluttered her eyes open and smiled to see her new dress in Sungmin’s hands

“Your dress is so lovely my Crown Princess. You should prepare now so you can meet Crown Prince Yunkyo.”

When Jaeyoung finished fixing herself, she admired herself in front of the mirror. Her hair was braided beautifully.

“My Crown Princess is so lovely.” Sungmin said as she saw the Crown Princess smile

“Sungmin-ah, can you get the first cloth that I embroidered on? I want to give it to my Crown Prince.”

“Don’t you want to keep it to yourself? You embroidered a lot of others, why not chose from those?”

“I promised myself that I would give my husband-to-be the first cloth I embroidered on.”

“As you wish my lady.” Sungmin said as she got the cloth and gave it to the Princess. The cloth had a beautiful design of a cherry blossom. Jaeyoung then remembered her first kiss with the Crown Prince under the cherry blossom tree.

“Your highness, shall we go?” Sungmin said waking up the Princess from her trance

“Yes.” Jaeyoung said after once last look on the mirror

When they got out, both of them walked around the palace grounds. A lot of people would bow as the Princess walked by. From afar, Prince Yunkyo was there watching the Crown Princess walk around the palace. He was frozen as the Princess looked at his direction and smiled. Jaeyoung was happy to see the Prince also wearing his royal attire. She then told Sungmin and they walked closer to him.

“It’s a pleasure to see you today my Crown Prince.” Crown Princess Jaeyoung greeted

“It’s nice seeing you today. You are lovelier than a flower because of that attire that suits you.” The Prince smiled back

“You mean that I wasn’t that lovely before I wore this attire?”

“Ummmm….that’s not what I mean…ummm…….you are always lovely……ummmmmm…..” Yunkyo said as he blushed

“You look fine as well in your attire.” Jaeyoung smiled which made the Crown Prince’s heart beat faster

“Kyuhyun-ah, I’ll be leaving with the Crown Princess now, go along for now.” Yunkyo said to his adviser

“Yes Sir. Please be safe your highness.” Kyuhyun said as he bowed

“I’ll be fine.” Jaeyoung smiled to Sungmin. Sungmin bowed and watched the Crown Princess stroll with the Crown Prince

There was a pregnant silence as Jaeyoung and Yunkyo strolled nearing a garden.

“Are you glad that I was chosen?” Yunkyo broke the silence

“I beg your pardon?” Jaeyoung asked

“Nevermind.” Yunkyo said as he turned another way to avoid the gaze of the beauty

“I’m filled with glee.”

“Oh?”

“I hope my parents and the Queen Dowager have chosen wisely. It’s an honor to be your future spouse.” Jaeyoung said as she smiled but it suddenly faded at the thought of marrying at her young age. She’s almost in her middle twenties however this is old enough for the elders.

“Why have you become glum?” Yunkyo asked

“I’m fine my Crown Prince.” Jaeyoung said as she tried to show a grin

“Come along with me.” Yunkyo said as he offered his hand to Jaeyoung. Jaeyoung accepted as she put her hand in the Crown Prince’s palm. They walked to the pond and breathed the fresh air that blew around them

“I’m in my late twenties but I feel so young.” Yunkyo said as he chuckled. Jaeyoung still held his hand and listened

“I wouldn’t want to marry this time but I know I have to fulfill my duties for the best. I…….I’m not ready to get married but……when our families get connected, we can be stronger in leading this nation.” Yunkyo said as he looked at Jaeyoung who had teary eyes. Jaeyoung let go of Yunho’s hand and looked away.

“I don’t know what I feel about you. I think I’m not ready yet. I wouldn’t want to bring dishonor to my family if I were to refuse this marriage.” Jaeyoung said as one tear escaped her eye

“I think you’ll be a great queen for me and the entire Choseon. You have studied a lot in secret and I’m sure you’re capable of helping me……as my wife.” Yunkyo said as he stared at Jaeyoung back

“I wish of a marriage where my other half really loves me and I love him.” Jaeyoung said as she watched two birds flying together

“Have you forgotten my confession to you near the cherry blossom trees? I was sincere and I’m sure my feelings are genuine. I’m sorry if you don’t feel the same my Crown Princess.” Yunkyo said with a tone of disappointment

“I just wanted to know if you do really love me. I have fallen for you too, my Crown Prince.” Jaeyoung said as she turned around meeting the gaze of Yunkyo. They both got silent and just stared at each other.
