Chapter One
WallsKai hated his new home. It was a nice, big sturdy house built in the mid 1800's with a ton of rooms and a good amount of acreage out the backdoor, but still he hated it.
The fact was that this beautiful new home was thousands of miles away from his life. Kai grew up in Seoul, South Korea, and due to his dancing talent, outgoing personality, and inherent good looks, Kai was one of the most popular people in his school. He had lots of friends and even more admirers; he was what people liked to call a "kingka". He loved his quaint apartment home in the city and his status at school. He had known his best friend SeHun since first grade, and he had had his eye on one of the dorkiest, prettiest guys in his school. Now he would never get a chance to make Do Kyungsoo his.
Last week his whole perfect life turned upside down.
His dad passed away six years ago, and only about a year ago did Kai’s mom begin to date again. She met a man that she really hit it off with, and last Thursday they were married. All would have been fine, but the couple promptly moved the family across the world to a "cottage" in the English countryside.
Kai couldn't think for the life of him what he was going to do in England... there were no schools near his new home, so his mother set up online classes for him. Kai's English was passable, but he was afraid that most people wouldn't be able to understand him because of his accent. The closest market was 50 kilometers away, and the nearest house was 16 kilometers away and owned by an elderly couple. His mom's new husband, Kevin, travelled a lot and so they had no animals, despite the old barn that stood on the property.
So here he was, stuck in the middle of a new country with no animals, no kids his age, and to top it off, shoddy internet and cell phone reception.
Kai was sure that the next year was going to be utterly miserable, and he had already determined that as soon as he turned eighteen he was moving back to Korea, one way or another. He'd make it work... he had a lot of friends who could help him out. That was less than a year away, so he figured he could survive England for that long.
Taking a good long look around his new room, he could tell that Kevin had tried his best to make sure Kai felt at home. A large dresser stood on one wall, a full size bed and two small tables underneath the big window across from the door, and what looked to be a new desk and comfortable chair opposite the dresser. With a sigh, he threw his pillows down onto the bed and contemplated taking a nap. After all, it might only be 4pm here in England but it was 1am in Seoul.
He stood and eyed the bed for a moment, then finally turned away. Kai was tired, but he had slept a lot on the plane and on the drive here, so he decided to put off the nap and try to acclimate himself to the new time zone.
Grabbing his clothing suitcase, he moved over to his new dresser to begin putting his belongings away. He only had about a weeks worth of clothes with him (the rest were still on their way from Korea), so he was done in mere minutes. He continued his mission to kill time by fitting his bed with sheets and blankets and then unpacking his suitcase of belongings he had brought with him. The computer and ipod dock went onto his new desk, and his trusty alarm clock onto the stand beside his bed. Soon he stepped back to check out his work, and was satisfied that the room seemed a lot more ‘his’.
He paused to look at the window into the ‘backyard’; it honestly wans’t much of one. There was only a bit of grass before it gave way to a thick green forest, and from the vantage point his second story window gave him, he could see rock outcroppings jutting out above the treetops only a short di
