The Villa: As a Team

Big Windup!: Stealing Home

We finally got to the house, and some of the guys were disappointed because it looked old. I wasn’t it reminded me of my aunt’s house in North Carolina. Coach pulled me aside and told me I’d be rooming with her. We had to wash the sheets, clean the kitchen, and set up our beds before we got ready for dinner. Then we found out that we’d be cooking our dinner. Coach took us out back to look for herbs and greens. “Okay, now let’s all split up into groups and look for our dinner!” she said. I gulped at the word ‘groups’. I always get left behind. Maybe I could get by with looking by myself. “Takizawa, lets team up.” I turned to see Abe holding a basket for the vegetables. I nodded relieved, and pleased that he asked me instead of the other way around. We walked over to a patch of herbs, and Abe helped me pick out the right ones, since I’d never seen them before. I noticed Mihashi searching by himself, and without a basket while filling the basket. Abe noticed too. “Mihashi, come search with us!” he shouted. Mihashi was nervous at first, but eventually he joined us. I think it put a little more stress on Abe, because he had to point out to Mihashi which ones were poisonous. When we got inside, I helped Shinooka wash the vegetables and then past them through our cooking assembly line. Then we all sat around the table as a team. I couldn’t help but feel happy. Abe asked me to sit with him, so I sat in between him and Mihashi. As soon as we said our prayers, we all dug in. I practically had to shove people’s hands around to get one piece of food. I looked at my plate and noticed that there was more than I had picked up. Abe put a few vegetables on my plate and smiled. He was helping me! I looked over at Mihashi, who was having just as hard a time, and decided to do the same for him. He looked a little embarrassed, but thanked me any way. Then we all stuffed our faces until there was nothing left. It was time for bed, and the guys had started a pillow fight. I walked out onto the balcony from my room, and saw Mihashi sitting outside the room, watching them. “Mihashi, aren’t you going to join them?” I asked as I walked up to him. He shook his head no. “Then…can I sit with you?” I asked. He looked at me surprised, the way he usually does when I reach out to him, and nodded yes. I sat with my back to the fence and looked inside. It was an all-out pillow war. I couldn’t help but laugh every once in a while. “I…haven’t been sleeping well.” Mihashi said suddenly. I looked at him sympathetically. “Is it because of the game?” I asked. He nodded. Without even thinking about it, I grabbed his hand and looked at him. “Don’t worry about it, you’ll do great, and I’m gonna be right behind you all the way.” Mihashi blushed, the expected reaction. Then, completely without warning, a pillow hit me on the side of the head so hard that I actually bumped my head on the fence behind me almost with a crack. It didn’t really hurt, since I was born with a hard head. But Mihashi and the others didn’t know that, and he got a little pale. I had to let him know I was alright. I pried the pillow of my face and slowly stood up. I looked into the room where everyone was staring at me. Hanai stood forward, looking really worried. “Are you okay Takizawa?” he asked. I nodded without changing my expression. “I didn’t mean to hit you, it was an accident. You believe me right?” I nodded yes. “But…” I started to say. “But what?” he asked. I stifled a smirk. “You still have to pay.” Before he could react, I threw the pillow full force at his face and sent him falling backward. Tajima had a fit of laughter, and some of the guys made ‘ooh you just got served’ noises. Hanai pulled the pillow off his face, red hot with embarrassment. “Why you…” he started. I ran in, leapt over him, summersaulted onto the floor, grabbed the nearest pillow and went into a fighting stance. “Bring it.” I said. I threw the pillow at my head, but I ducked and got him in the stomach. Then everyone else started to join in, taking sides. I went at Hanai a few times; he went at me a few times. Tajima even tried to pick up a futon, but got tackled too quickly. While I was laughing, Hanai snuck up on me and lifted me over his shoulder. Guys from my side tried to help me, and before you knew it we all toppled over. We lay there, in one giant dog pile, laughing our butts off. I smiled so much I was afraid my face would freeze. I was finally having fun on a team
