Living Hell [HIATUS]

“Are you done yet?” I grumbled in complaint as I sat with my arms crossed over my chest. I tried my best to glare at Yuri, but it was hard to show my distaste to the one I love. Besides, I wasn’t exactly mad at her. It was more the topic we were discussing that I was repulsed by.

“But don’t you want to hear about my date with Taemin?” Yuri pouted as she leaned forward with her hands holding her legs in the criss-cross position. I felt my mouth water slightly as the girl’s low-cut shirt gave me a peek at the top of her cleavage. Trying to remain dignified, I flicked her forehead to make her retract. She winced at the small pain and fell back, keeping the provocative sight hidden once again.

“Not really,” I bluntly stated, clearly showing my distaste for the boy. It’s not just Taemin, but all of her past boyfriends that I’ve openly detested them. Why should I bother hiding it?

“Youngminnie!” she whined. “But I really want to tell somebody.”

“Well then, you should have gotten a girl best friend instead,” I shrugged. “I really don’t want to hear about all that mushy stuff Taemin does for you.” To be honest, that is a lie. I am actually a hopeless romantic who loves reading and hearing about stuff like that. But the last person I want to hear about that stuff from is Yuri. Besides, nobody really knows about that side of me.

“Please?” she pleaded, giving me her signature puppy eyes. I immediately averted my eyes, but it was too late. I had already gotten a glimpse of them. Sighing in defeat, my shoulders deflated as I hunched forward.

“Fine,” I mumbled while waving my hand to signal her to go on. Her aura perked up as a winning smile spread across her face, lighting up the dimly lit room. Our attention was long distracted from the television show that was playing as we were sitting together on the red velvet couch in my living room.

“Well, he took me out to this park where we ended up having a picnic,” she cheered. “We were kind of hidden behind some trees, and he kissed me-“

“La, la, la!” I childishly sang as I covered my ears. She reached over and slapped my arm a little harder than necessary. I quickly rubbed the spot while flashing a pout.

“Don’t give me that,” she pointed accusingly at me. I rolled my eyes obnoxiously at her and got off of the couch.

“Yeah, yeah,” I waved to her, this time one that showed disinterest. She looked at my curiously, but I just continued on my path to the kitchen. On my way, I snatched the clear glass bowl on the white coffee table. Inside the bowl was little popcorn kernels that refused to pop. I immediately tossed them into the rubbish bin before opening up the microwave. On the side of the stove laid a box with bags of popcorn. I tore off the wrapper and flopped the package into the microwave which hovered over the stove. After punching in the appropriate cooking time, I made my way back to the couch, empty handed.

“I just don’t understand why you are always like this,” Yuri continued to rant. “Why do you hate Taemin so much?”

“Because,” I stated in a matter-of-fact tone as if that was a legit reason. Yuri, of course, didn’t buy it.

            “Be a little more specific.”

“I have my reasons, okay?” I felt my temper rising as I, sort of, yelled at her. Because I love you. My heart panged as I imagined her liking me back, us kissing, holding each other close. But those quick flashes of fantasy disappeared when she yelled my name.

“You are being unfair!” she whined. Sighing, I leaned forward and ruffled her jet black hair. She instantly calmed down at my comforting act.

“I’m sorry,” I grumbled. “It’s because I’ve never met him, and I don’t trust him with you.” It wasn’t entirely a lie, after all. I really have never met this kid, so how could I possibly be okay with him when I only know him based on Yuri’s descriptions?

“Youngminnie,” she cooed before pulling me into an embrace. Her long fingers ran through my hair as she rubbed her cheek against mine. I was hesitant to hold her back, and by the time I raised my arms to hold her, she began to pull away.

“You worry too much,” she smiled softly to me. I rolled my eyes at her, in a jocular manner, and let out a chuckle. She quickly followed suit and joined me in laughter. This usually always happened. We rarely ever fought since we were best friends, but whenever we did, it ended quickly with us laughing. Suddenly, a beeping sound came from the kitchen, signaling that the popcorn was ready. I looked at Yuri, pleading to her with my eyes to go get the delicious snack. She immediately shook her head and gave me an evil smirk.

“Fine!” I raised my hands in defeat, “I’ll get it.” As I walked back to the kitchen, I couldn’t help but smile. This was our friendship.

-----

It is currently the morning after last night, and I am standing in front of Yuri’s front door. Now, in case you were wondering, she is my next door neighbor. Both our families live in apartment complexes as they have found it to be more comforting than houses. Our parents usually work long hours ranging from early in the morning to late at night. Since that is the case, Yuri’s parents put me in charge of looking after her as we are childhood friends and they knew they could trust me.

Now back to the present; I am impatiently tapping my foot with my arms crossed over my chest. For once, the girl actually decided to lock her door. I realize that I should happy about this since it will protect her from strangers randomly coming to her door, but I couldn’t help but be upset. I mean, how am I supposed to sneak up to her room and secretly cuddle with her like I always do? Oh, I just realized how strange that sounded. Forget I said anything. Just then, the sound of the locks jingling came from the other side of the door.

“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Yuri sang as she stepped out wearing a simple outfit of dark skinny jeans and a light graphic tee. Her striking, electric blue backpack was slung over one shoulder and matched her Vans quite nicely. I looked down at my attire to make sure that I wasn’t too dressed up that I would look like I was trying too hard. I sighed in relief when I saw my ensemble of light blue skinny jeans and a white v-neck with a clock on it. The bright yellow backpack I was carrying was the only flashy thing on me.

“We still have school, you know?” I scolded her playfully. “You can’t be sleeping in.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she waved it off nonchalantly. Before her hand went all the way back down to her side, she reached over and grabbed my hand. Since I was used to it, I just continued my path and led us to my car.

After the long drive that involved obnoxious drivers and endless amounts of red lights, we eventually made it to school. Even though I was only seventeen, I already hated driving. The people, the waiting, the noise; it was all so infuriating. Don’t judge me; I have other things I’d rather worry about. In fact, where did that girl go?

I began to look around after being lost in my thoughts for a few seconds. Yuri had suddenly scurried off without even telling me. Deciding I would see her later, I went to class alone. The bland, off-white walls which matched the tile flooring left a gloomy atmosphere. Letting out a sigh, I took a random seat in the middle, dropping my backpack to the side of the desk. Looking around, I searched for somebody to talk to.

The room was only half full with people sitting on desks, talking with their friends. Amongst the crowd, I managed to spot just who I was looking for. Debating on getting up or not, I decided on doing it the lazy way.

“Minwoo!” I called out to him. The brunette immediately turned his attention to me, allowing his head to tilt in a cute manner. At first, he gazed around in my general area in confusion, looking for the source of the voice. Once he noticed it was me, a smile stretched from ear to ear.

“Youngmin!” he practically yelled as he ran to my side. On his way over, he grabbed his backpack and dragged it over to the desk on my left.

“What’s up?” I greeted him as he took a seat. He slouched in his seat comfortably before glancing over. A smirk played on his lips as he stared at me.

“I should ask you that,” he laughed. I immediately rolled my eyes in response. This is what I get for telling him I liked Yuri.

            “You are an idiot.”

            “Well? How are you two?”

“Nothing is going to happen; nothing will ever happen.”

“What won’t happen?” I suddenly heard Yuri say as a pair of arms wrapped around my neck and a body pressed against my back.  My chest suddenly tightened as my heart began to race. I looked to Minwoo for help, but he just had that stupid smirk on his face. He was obviously enjoying this.

“Nothing,” I tried to say nonchalantly. My nose immediately scrunched once the word failed to smoothly roll of my tongue. There was a slight quiver.

‘It was only a little bit; she didn’t notice,” I thought to try and calm myself down. Much to my relief, Yuri pried herself off of my back and took the seat behind me. And even better, she didn’t question my response to her question. In fact, she was now turned to the girl to her right and engrossed in a conversation.

“You are one lucky man,” Minwoo snickered as he childishly pointed at me. I smacked his hand down and turned to face the front of the classroom, planning to ignore him until lunch. I ended up staring at the messily wiped chalkboard until the teacher came in after a few minutes.

The lectures grabbed on pretty quickly, but I didn’t even pay much attention. The first couple of classes weren’t my best subjects as they involved math and history. During the morning, I usually just distracted myself by writing the lyrics to my favorite songs and humming them lowly. Yuri was behind me, drumming her fingers against the desk to the tune. Whenever I snuck a peek at her, she smiled gently before returning to her notes. I never knew how she was able to do so many things at once.

Just then, the bell rang, signaling that it was time for lunch. I glanced from my left to my right to see my fellow peers grabbing their stuff and racing out the door with their friends. Following suit, I messily stuffed my notebook and pencils into my backpack. I immediately began to stretch before slinging one strap onto my right shoulder.

“Ready to go?” I lazily asked Yuri as I pressed my side against her desk. She was vigorously scribbling the last of her notes while glancing back and forth from the board to her journal.

“Don’t rush me,” she scolded, “I’m probably going to have to tutor you later, so we both need this.” I laughed at her retort before shrugging. It was true, after all. That’s basically another reason to why I don’t pay attention in class. She finally finished and followed my example of shoving her stuff into her backpack. After a fight with the zipper, she got her bag closed and on her back.

“Let’s go,” I chuckled before heading off to the cafeteria with her behind me. We patiently got into the lunch line and waited. After being served our food, we carried into a semi-empty table since Minwoo and Kwangmin were there. We set down our trays before taking a seat across from the pair.

“I’m telling you, Power Rangers most definitely dominate over Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” Minwoo argued before violently stabbing his fork into his chicken fried steak for emphasis. Kwangmin shook his head in denial before calmly taking a bit out of burger.

“Doesn’t matter; Pokémon beats all,” he stated in a matter-of-fact tone before nodding. Minwoo groaned before slamming his hands onto the table.

“You are nuts,” he complained. I rolled my eyes at the two while Yuri just laughed.

“I think you are both insane,” I reasoned which caused Yuri to laugh harder.

“I – I second that,” she managed to choke out.

“Yah!” Minwoo began to pout, “you guys are jerks.” Kwangmin began to poke Minwoo’s now bloated cheeks while Yuri and I just turned our attention to the food. Time passed by quickly after we all indulged in our conversation and meal. The bell rang before we knew it and retreated to our classrooms. Instead of a lecture, we ended up getting an assignment.

“Finish this packet before the end of the day; you can also work with a partner,” Mr. Kim instructed before waving us off. I immediately turned in my seat to see Yuri giving me an agreeing smile. She pulled her chair over to be next to mine, and we shared my desk. Since it English, it was fairly easy. We ended up speeding through the assignment within half an hour. Class got out in another twenty minutes, so Yuri and I ended up talking softly.

“So what were you and Minwoo talking about this morning?” she questioned curiously as she began to play with my left hand.

“What do you mean?” I laughed halfheartedly in an attempt to cover up my nervousness.

“You said something was never going to happen,” she explained. “What was the something?”

“My, you are one curious girl,” I joked with a funny accent. It immediately brought a smile to her face as she laughed at my attempt. Her hands strayed away from mine as she ruffled my blonde hair.

“Come on!” she pouted. “You have to tell me.”

            “Now I’m being forced?”

            “Well-“

“That’s not very nice, Yuri,” I playfully scolded her while wagging my finger at her. She opened to snap a remark, but we suddenly felt a vibration. Slowly, she reached into her back pocket to pull out her cell phone.

“Rebel,” I mumbled under my breath which caused her to gently slap my bicep.

“Shut up,” she giggled as that love struck smile appeared yet again. I mentally cursed to myself as I watched her begin to text Taemin.

“What happened?” I nosily intruded, but she didn’t even seem to mind. In fact, she almost seemed happy that I asked.

“He asked me out on a date,” she informed me without taking her eyes off of her phone.

“Wait, you are ditching me again?” I almost shouted, completely offended. She just nodded in reply as she continued to converse with Taemin.

“You have got to be kidding me,” I sighed as I reached over to take the phone away. However, she used her feet to push her chair back to her desk.

            “Nope,” she answered my remark.

“Yuri, I’m begging you, please don’t go.”

            “Why not?”

“Because…” I trailed off slowly as I racked my brain for an excuse. She cut me off before I even could begin to think.

“Sorry, Younggie,” she apologized as she grabbed her bag. She slung it over her shoulder, and as if on cue, the bell rang to dismiss us for the day. I hurriedly began to pack my things before she could leave.

“Yuri, wait!” I called out to her, but she just waved and continued walking. I immediately sighed in defeat as I watched her retreating figure. Just then, a pair of hands comfortingly laid itself on my tense shoulders.

“Sorry, man,” Minwoo tried to console me. I shook my head before throwing my backpack on.

“It’s alright,” I shrugged. We both began to walk out of the classroom, but stopped to drop of the assignment on our way out.

“I’ll come over if that’ll make you feel better,” Minwoo flashed me a smile while making obscene gestures to act cute.

“No thanks,” I shook my head to him before leaving him behind pouting.
