Chapter 8.

One Step Too Late

Listen to Hello English Cover

---Epilogue---

Four Months Later

I breathed in deeply as I spread my arms out wide, enjoying the cool breeze blowing against my skin and hair. I rocked on the balls of my feet as I closed my eyes.

“Ready to jump?”

I opened my eyes and looked around, surprised, for the voice that had just talked to me. I thought I was alone.

A young man was sitting with his leg dangling off of the roof and the other bent close to his chest. His chin was rested on his knee and he was looking at me.

“What makes you think that?” I asked as I faced the scene below me again.

“Why else would you be standing on the edge of the roof of a fifty feet tall building?”

“To enjoy the view?”

He laughed. “Wow. That’s a first. I’ve never heard of anyone going to the roof to enjoy the view.”

“Where else would you go?” I asked, sitting next to him, swinging my legs.

He leaned closed to me and smirked. “Hmm... To a place that actually has something to see, maybe?”

I shrugged. “This place has plenty to see.”

“Like what?”

“Cars moving. People walking to and fro, going on with their everyday life. What more do you want?”

He threw his head back and laughed again. “You have an odd choice in scenery.”

I looked at him and shook my head. “Why are you here?”

He stared straight ahead into the fog. “Same as you I guess. To enjoy the view.”

I scoffed. “You just said you’ve never heard someone going to the roof to enjoy the view.”

He winked. “Oops, caught.”

“No, really. What are you doing here? Are you going to jump off?”

“Psh, I work here.”

I was surprised. “Oh. My bad.”

“No problem. How’d you get up here?”

“Why?”

He rolled his eyes. “As the CEO of this company, I think I deserve to know how random people I’ve never met before got up on the roof of my building.”

“Oh... Uhh... I came here for an interview and just somehow got up here.”

“Did you get accepted?”

“Nope,” I said, shaking my head.

“Well, you’re hired now,” he said, standing up and stretching with his eyes closed.

I gawked at him. “What?”

He opened an eye and looked at me. “I need a new secretary.”

“Uhh...okay...Here’s my resume...” I handed him a folder but he waved it off.

“No need. I just need your name.”

“Lee Soojin.”

He grinned and held out his hand. “Annyeonghaseyo Lee Soojin-shi. I’m Kim Myungsoo, your new boss. Nice to meet you. Now, let’s get to work.”

When I didn’t respond, he grabbed my hand, shook it once, and began to walk away.

“Are you going to keep standing there or are you going to start working?”

I touched the ring on my left hand and twisted it so the two entwined hearts were facing up. I squinted at the cloudy sky and covered my eyes as the sun suddenly broke out of the clouds.

I looked at my new boss who was waiting for me at the door leading to the staircase and smiled.

Sunggyu, are you looking from above? Don’t worry about me. I’ll be happy forever and always.

A/N:
This story was actually based of a personal experience. I had a friend that, well, he didn't really dote on me or anything, but he was really caring and he always, always, said hi and talked to me when he saw me. Then he got a girlfriend, and now, every time we pass each other, we don't even look at each other. I didn't like him or anything, but I thought that this would be a great story plot xD

Oh and this is my version of an excerpt of Beowulf. I needed it for my class last year. xD
