Ends and Beginnings - part II

“Jo Nami please report to the librarian’s office” The secretary’s voice sounded cranky already. It was only 10am on Wednesday and you wondered what made her so cranky so early on.
You weren’t startled by the call though; it wasn’t the first time Miss Yang asked for you. And considering only a few days were left before summer vacation, she will need all the help she could get in that scruffy library. You were rereading your History essay one last time as you made your way to the library and, naturally, you weren’t looking in front of you.
“Oh. Careful there” someone said while chuckling.
You stopped in your tracks, slowly putting down your essay from your face. You recognized that chuckle from two days ago. You were pretty sure you’d recognize it for your whole life. Along with that soft yet deep voice.
“oh hi. Sorry I-”
“it’s alright don’t worry. Are you heading to the library too?”
“yes. I got called by Miss Yang I’ll be helping her”
“great! I got called too, let’s go then” he said leading the way.
Your history essay was quite obviously forgotten. You could only follow, slightly mindless and still a bit surprised that this stranger was acting like you were friends for years.
“Ah young lads! I’m so thankful to have you both. The only worthy students in this dismal place” Miss Yang was sitting at her desk when you and Mister Handsome got in.
You both chuckled at Miss Yang’s comment seeing as her desk was drowning in files and papers.
“I don’t have much time to start explaining everything to you dear” she started looking at you. “Basically, you’ll be helping me like often but this time, you’ll have to work a bit harder. I”ll be seeing you after school as well and on this last Saturday. I’ll let Minho here walk you through your new job as I go tend to the front desk.”
Minho. Minho. Even his name sounded like a melody. You could only nod, not really listening to what Miss Yang was saying anymore.
“Alright then. Shall we get to work?”
You were so dazed that he had to wave a hand in front of your face to wake you from your reverie.
“Oh yes sure. Let’s do this!” you chimed a bit too cheerfully for someone who was just told they’d be working at the library on the last week of school and on Saturday which was the End of Year Festivity day.
The rest of the afternoon went by too quickly according to you. Minho, who finally formally introduced himself, showed you how the orders worked in the bookshelves and even though you already knew it you had listened to every word he said. You were both wrapping books when Miss Yang came in to let you know it was time to go.
“Alright lads, we’re closing shop for today.”
You gathered up your things ready to leave when Minho cleared his throat. You turned to see him pacing from side to side.
“Would you…erm…do you wanna walk together?” he was still looking at the floor.
“Of course!” it didn’t even take you a second to respond. But you mentally hit yourself for answering too quickly; your little crush might start being obvious.
“Gooooood morning Sophia! Hello my sweet Taemin” You chimed as you sat facing them in the cafeteria. They glanced at each other with questioning looks before turning back to you.
“Are you alright or did you fall stepping down from the bus again?” Taemin had a worried look.
“Don’t worry about her Taemin, she’s just being like this because she’s in lo-”
You cut Jong off by jabbing his sides with your elbow.
“Do you really have to ruin every single one of my days? Have you not something better to do?” You glared at him.
“Whatever, I’ll see you guys at lunch” you said picking up your things and heading for the library.
The day was again spent between your classes and Miss Yang’s office in the library but you still hadn’t seen Minho yet. As the bell rang for lunch time you quickly headed there again to check.
“Hi there. Sorry I couldn’t make it this morning, I had badminton practice.” He said greeting you at the library doors.
“Oh no, it’s alright.”
One more thing to daydream about. He was an athlete!
You were both dismissed from you afternoon class seeing as Miss Yang told your teachers how overworked she was. Besides, no one did anything in class anyway; it was the last week so nothing important was going on.
As you both worked the afternoon away, you started chatting and actually got closer. You learned that he was the oldest son of a family of 3 kids and you told him that you were an only child. He told you about his best friend from middle school which turned out to be Jonghyun and you told him that Taemin and Sophia were your friends. You both decided to hang out during End of Year Festivity day since you had common friends.
He also let slip that your hair was really pretty and you managed to tell him that his glasses really suited him in return.
All in all, it was a fantastic afternoon that you spent with your new friend….or crush.
Come Friday evening you had done all your exams and handed in all of your essays. High school was almost officially over. Tomorrow would be the special End of Year Festivity and you were planning to spend a great day with your friends.
The next morning, Miss Yang woke you up with a very early call. She said that she forgot about some files and books in a cabinet and that she’d really appreciate your help one last time. You said yes and groaned loudly as you hung up. It was Saturday morning and festivity day yet you still had work. It was just great.
You quickly got ready, wondering if Minho would be there too. As you were waiting for the bus you checked your phone again just as you remembered that you hadn’t exchanged phone numbers. Oh…
“I’m really sorry to call upon you dear, I know its Festivity day and all but it’ll be quick I promise” Miss Yang was waiting outside the library for you.
Well it wouldn’t be that bad. You liked Miss Yang so it was alright. As you got into the office though, it slowly started to feel not so right. There were piles of folders and papers along with some books stacked on the floor.
“Miss Yang….where exactly were these books when we were working during the week??”
This clearly was going to take more than just a few moments. You sighed and started moving the piles, glancing at the door as you did hoping that someone would come by. Not anyone but someone someone, yes, him.
“Ah see, it didn’t take that long!” Miss Yang was putting the last file in her drawer, smiling as she looked around her now clean and paper-free office.
“Miss Yang, it’s almost 3’o’clock.” You were sitting cross legged on the clean floor, your back resting on the wall and your eyes on the clock in Miss Yang’s office.
You had been hoping that he’d come, that he’d surprise you by bursting through the door and apologizing for being late. But he hadn’t. You mentally smacked yourself for putting so much hope into a guy you barely knew.
“Oh come on now. I’ll walk you to the gardens, I’m sure there are some leftovers still.” Miss Yang was trying to cheer you up but you doubted anyone would still be there save for the organizers who had to clean up.
You sat on one of the benches and watched as Miss Yang put some fruits and pie on her plate before she headed back to her office. You sighed and looked up at the sky; it wasn’t perfectly clear but it was still beautiful. The blue of the sky and the whiteness of the clouds complemented each other; rays of sunlight playing through it all.
“It’s entrancing isn’t it” you were startled by a sweet voice you could recognize amongst millions.
“i..didn’t know you were here.”
You were still sad yet you couldn’t help but smile upon seeing his face.
“Actually I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were at the library since morning; otherwise I would have joined.”
His apologetic face made you chuckle.
“Don’t be silly. I came in such a rush that I forgot to tell anyone that I was here. Miss Yang still had piles and piles of books and files to sort out!”
You were both smiling to each other seemingly in a bubble of your own until a loud noise interrupted the perfect scene.
“oh my…I think you’re hungry” Minho smirked.
You rolled your eyes and hit him on the arm for laughing at your stomach noise.
“Yes I am sir. I haven’t had breakfast actually”
“Well then my fair lady,” he said standing up and bowing slightly presenting his arm to you “let me lead the way.”
You were slightly confused but took his arm nonetheless and stood up to follow him. You weren’t going to question Mr. Charming. You let him lead the way to the picnic tables and put what was leftover on a plate for you. As you turned and started heading back to the benches he held you back.
“there’s somewhere else we should be”
You had no idea what or where he was talking about so you just shrugged and followed.
As you got closer you recognized where you were going; your spot behind the oak tree.
“you guys are still here?!?” you really weren’t expecting them to have waited all day.
It wasn’t a wasted day after all; your friends were gathered in your favorite spot and you were finishing the year with a new friend! Let’s not forget he made you a plate of food.
As you began talking with everyone conversation drifted to what college everyone had applied to.
“I’m going to Seoul Arts” said Sophia. “they have a wonderful program for Architecture”
“I’m going there too” Jong chimed in. “only for you tho baby” he said looking at Sophia. She rolled her eyes as everyone else laughed. They knew Jong applied in music because he was really talented.
“I’m taking the year off to travel with my parents” Taemin said smiling. You couldn’t believe that child was already going to college too.
“I’m going to Seoul National-”
“I got into Seoul National-”
You and Minho had both said. And then fell silent. You were both going to the same university. What are the odds! Granted it might not be the same program but just being in the same campus as him gave you butterflies and made you blush.
“oohh isn’t that a nice coincidence” Jong said winking to Minho.
Thankfully Sophia jabbed him with her foot and he shut up.
“well it’s nice! We’re already gonna now someone on campus” you said.
“yeah! and we have all summer to get to know each other” he said smiling at you.
Yes, this was definitely gonna be an awesome summer.
