“Alright pens down everyone, time’s up.”
The teacher’s statement was followed by some groans here and there and papers, pens and bags being picked up. You looked up to see Sophia scribbling as quickly as she could with her tongue sticking out in concentration, writing her last sentence. Students were rushing to the front desk, some carelessly tossing their essays on the teacher’s desk before bolting out the door as if the class was on fire. As for you, you took your time in tidying your bag, putting your pens in your small pencil case and handing in your essay. You waited for your friend and both of you made your way out of the classroom with slight smiles playing on your lips. There were 2 finals left and therefore, no need to rush.
“Ah, Jo Nami, just the person I was looking for” hearing his voice made you stop in your tracks. Your smile was gone and you rolled your eyes as he made his way in front of you. Sophia smirked and raised an eyebrow before she whispered “see you” and headed for the door.
“What now Jonghyun, I don’t have time for you. I still have finals and, unlike you, I study for them.”
“woah there cowboy. I just wanted to ask you how your philosophy final went and, for your information, bitter young lady, I do study.”
“bitter young lady, really Jong, is that what you came up with today.” You scoffed and turned away from him, heading for the library. You heard him follow which made you quicken your pace.
“Fine Jo, hurry on up to the library to hide. Or is there something else hiding behind those books? Should I follow and find out?”
You heard his smirk in his words. You stopped in your tracks and turned, glaring at him.
“look Kim Jonghyun, my Monday started out pretty well for once and I plan on keeping it that way until I head home. Shouldn’t you be tailing Sophia anyway? Now bug off and stay away from me. For the whole week preferably.”
You could see he was slightly taken aback by your sudden outburst but he didn’t say anything and watched you walk into the library without another word. You never minded Jong’s teasing here and there since he was your friend’s friend; he introduced you to each other almost two months ago. Jong was known to be social, but he started to get on your nerves recently; his teasing had gotten worst and mostly directed towards you. He had stopped messing with the posh girls during lunch and didn’t hang out with the jocks afterschool. Instead, he’d follow you to the bus stop and try to make your books fall, or make you trip. But that didn’t stop him from flirting with anything that had a skirt on. You thought the extremely obvious change in his behavior was due to the end of the year approaching, the exams and all the stress but you knew there was something else; but what, you couldn’t figure out.
“ Dela 907.2301…ok. now Pat 470.109…ah, here” you went by, mumbling book call numbers as you went and picked them up from their respective shelves.
You had a History essay due and the last exam before summer vacation would be Psychology which meant you had reading to do.
“Hi Miss Yang, I’ll be taking these today” you chimed as you put the books on the counter, digging in your bag for your library card. Your head snapped up as you heard chuckling; Miss Yang didn’t chuckle.
“I’m here today, Miss Yang is in the back” he murmured in a deep voice.
But you were too struck to reply anything. This was definitely not Miss Yang. This was quite a handsome young man and, oh my, he was a student seeing as he was clad in the school’s bi-color uniform. His silk-like, jet black hair was just mildly covering his eyes. And what alluring eyes they were; big, round, and of a dark brown that seemed to reel you in. You stood there in awe wondering why you’ve never seen him before; juniors and seniors shared the same building and you all knew each other from freshman and sophomore year anyway; there were specific groups of friends but everyone’s face was seen at least once. Was he a transfer student? Maybe he didn’t know anyone and that’s why he worked at the library during free period?
“Here you go. They’re due in 5 days though; since it’s the end of the year we have to index everything you know.”
You only heard the voice but couldn’t make out the words which resulted in you blurting out “yes, it’s really warm in here.” You only realized your mistake when you heard people in line behind you chuckling and whispering. You quickly picked up the books and headed for the door; without even reading his name tag or retrieving your library card that was still in his hand. You didn’t usually talk to students you didn’t know and usually managed to not make a fool of yourself with your friends, but now this happened. You’ve highly embarrassed yourself in front of a senior or maybe even a new comer.
You spent Tuesday and Wednesday in the school garden, behind the oak tree that hid the pond. It was your little secret, your sweet and safe haven. Everyone knew there was a pond behind the oak tree in the garden but they didn’t come here. The girls didn’t want to dirty their skirts and the boys had the soccer fields anyway, and so you and your two best friends made it a small hangout spot. At first, the pond didn’t have any water in it and it was broken, the bench was so dirty it seemed as if no one had come for years and the grass was unkempt and filled with bad weed. Summer before junior year was therefore dedicated to bringing this place back to life. Taemin had brought some of his dad’s gardening tools and you had all worked to make it new. And it looked it now.
It was quite hot today and the sun was so high up, the tree’s shadow didn’t reach the bench. But that didn’t stop you from sitting and opening your books trying to concentrate on your readings. Besides, you weren’t going back to the library this week and you’d make Taemin or Sophia return the books for you. You had to concentrate on your Psychology readings and your History essay still needed an introduction and a revision. Besides, you already made a fool of yourself once; that did not need to happen again. In your haste to leave you hadn’t even looked at his name tag and that kept bothering you; why have you never seen him around. Or was he always hiding in that library.
“tss, and Jong says I live at the library. Yea right, I don’t even think he’s ever seen this guy”
“Which guy” Jong suddenly stood up from lying under the tree. Startled you stood up as well, dropping your books to the ground.
“Hey comrade ever heard of greetings? You scared me” you yelled as you picked up your things. The only response you got was a sly smirk.
“aww come on Nami, you didn’t mind me yesterday when-”
“WHAT? You were here yesterday? Jonghyun I told you to stop following me around. Good gracious can’t you see I can’t stand you around?” you glared at him and picked up your bag about to storm off. Just as you were about to round the old oak tree you felt his arm yank you back around.
“what do you think you’re-”
“just shut up. Just…just stop”
He was so close to you his breath was tickling your neck. You freed yourself from his hold and faced him.
“no Jonghyun. You stop. For good.”
And with that you left. You were a bit too mad to process what just happened. You knew Jong liked to fool around with girls but he had never tried anything on you. You couldn’t even explain what had just happened; why was he so mad anyway? You were thinking about how you were going to tell off Taemin for showing Jong your secret spot when you banged, head first, into someone coming out of the main door. Your books were once again sprawled on the floor.
“Oh dear, I’m sorry.” You mumbled to whomever it was while picking up your things.
“ah. Just who I was looking for!”
You were surprised to hear that; someone was looking for you and judging from the voice it was neither Taemin nor Yuna. You slowly lifted your head up to see who it might be and almost fell backwards. There he was, standing in front of you with a smile on his pristine face.
“you forgot your card at the library so I thought I’d bring it to you” he said handing it to you.
“I… well. Yes, thank you” you quickly took it keeping your eyes on his shoes so as to not embarrass yourself again.
“well, see you. Bye” you scampered off back into the building without waiting for an answer.
This last week was not going to be normal after all.
